Watch 2011, it's basically a re-adaptation so it contains all the original had with modern animation, it has also started to adapt arcs which were not in the original so it has more content to enjoy.

2011 is the complete experience, even though it changes a few small details.
You can still watch some fighting episodes from the original after it, though: It still hold up today and has impressive production.

You should watch the original just for the soundtrack after you finish the 2011 version, the atmosphere was darker, especially in Hunter exam arc.

Watch first episode of the original. Then, start 2011.

99's Yorknew arc is my personal favorite portrayal of it, though.

As a 2011 watcher, I'm curious. Except for getting slightly more content, is there a reason for me to go back and see the original?

the 2011 adaptation goes beyond where the 99 anime stopped. I watched both, and basically they're the exact same in terms of story with very minor changes. The 2011 cut off some scenes that don't really affect the story and replaced some (I don't recall many though, I'm talking about 4 or less scenes). As a fan of the 99 version, I noticed it's a lot more cheerful compared to the old one, which had a darker atmosphere. The colors are brighter too, but the art style changes a lot later on because of the development of a darker storyline (chimera ant arc).

You might be discouraged when you first start watching because it seems like a typical shounen, and somewhat childish but it's not. It will surprise you. So, I'd say watch the new one.

Interesting tidbit: there is this one funny thing regarding to violence. The 2011 series had some censoring going on since its timeslot was basically saturday morning, so original series was more faithful on this front. Then later the new series changed timeslots and now it's basically as violent, if not more than the original.

Overall, I still have to prefer pacing of the first one, at least for first 20 or so episodes. New show glossed over some minor character building in the beginning, but it picks up later on.
If I were you, I'd watch the new one. Old one does deserve some screentime though, it made some things better. The original felt very omnious with more restrained palette and eerie soundtrack.

In fact, if there's one thing I really think new one falls behind, it's the soundtrack. Fully orchestrated tracks are great, but there isn't really that big of selection of songs with brooding atmosphere, and since that atmosphere is often prevailent in HxH, it really starts to grind same few songs to the ground.
