Honestly, I really don't see what the big deal with shipping is. It basically happens with every work of fiction that involves more than three characters and an active shipping fanbase is usually sign that the interactions/relationships are compelling enough for the fans to be interested in developping them further or associating X character with character Y and see how things would go.
So yeah, as long as it doesn't enter the realm of creepiness (which here it clearly doesn't if sex isn't involved), shipping can be pretty healthy.

-Hinata has had a crush on Naruto since they were 13 and the shipping started way before Shippuden.
-It's up to debate, but it's been strongly hinted at than Homura is , and both are 14.
-At the end of Avatar TLA Katara was 15 and Aang was 13.
-Simon, who's 14, had a big crush on Yoko, whose age varies between 14 and 16 depending on your country's law regarding age of consent (lol).

This is anime so anything can happen and if they can kill, why they can't fall in love? I don't know what planet you guys come from but here in planet Earth, 12 years old fall in love and are in relationships. Heck, I had my first relationship when I was 12 and my first crush when I was 6. So age is NOT a problem. In some countries, underage kids can have sex as long as their partner is their same age!!

As for Gon being straight, I think he is more asexual right now. He is not interested in relationships yet because he is too innocent, Killua has said it before...even when he was watching porn, Gon didn't join him. He went to dates with his Aunt! a date for him is just to be of company to girls and nothing more.

Having said all that, I don't discard the possibility of a deeper relationship in the future but as of right now, they are just very dear friends and sexual attraction is not in their minds.

Do I want them to end up together in the end? well...why not? if you take into consideration their friendship seriously, you would realize that they would make the perfect couple and it would be a great twist to the story! also very realistic since most best friends usually fall in love when they're opposite sex in real life, so why it can't happen the same with the same sex?
