Reality is filled with tragedy, so your fantasy world should also be filled with tragedy.

They don't call him the Urobutcher for nothing.

If you can't handle tragedy, then don't watch.

For those who are might be wondering, there are a few plotholes at the end. First, the character descriptions say that both Reiji and Eren die. To start, earlier in the series, Reiji took a few bullets to the chest (I can't find an image of the exact location), but as you guys probably know, most bullets around the chest are hitting vital organs. He also, almost drowned, and didn't receive treatment for a while. Survived from it. There is no reason to believe that a single silenced shot (from around the same distance to a non-lethal area of the body) would have killed him. You can make the argument that it was lethal, but based on the position of the gun, if the bullet went straight, it was hitting his lower torso, near his waist. If it hit his heart, he would have dropped instantly, but that was not the case. Finally, Eren likely consumed the some variation of the Oxytropis flower. The oxytropis flower is known to cause mental trauma (hence it's nickname, locoweed (crazy weed)). Thus, there is no chance that she had died. Therefore we can only conclude one thing.

TL:DR The implied death of the characters made for a beautiful ending as it represented their freedom from inferno. Did they actually die? Eren is perfectly fine (after the toxins in the plant wear off) and Reiji has seen better days, highly unlikely that he died, given what he has been through. After Reiji's recovery period, they will go to living happily ever after (preferably as lovers, but the whole brother and sister thing can work too I guess). Worst case scenario, Reiji dies and Eren is left alone, but fulfilled.
