I just assume that when someone doesn't specify their gender... they belong to the LGBT thingy..

Just a question, but why is it necessary to know someone's gender when you just want to talk about anime-related stuff?

To compensate for their blandness by being mysterious, naturally.

There's nothing wrong If they don't want to tell their gender. No one cares anyway...

This whole topic was made, because there clearly people here on MAL who care about such a trivial thing.

I don't think too much of it. I understand the desire to have a mysterious persona. As others have mentioned, even if someone were to choose Male / Female, there would be no easy way to verify if that is indeed the case. I'd say 9 out of 10 times I'm able to discern a person's gender online by analyzing their writing and diction.

Some may prefer not to specify for fear of harassment while others do not identify with either gender.

I honestly don't see why it matters. This isn't a dating site.

From what I've seen you're either 12, a troll or a obnoxious pervert.

Possibly all of the above.

Maybe people wish to be judged on their personality rather than gender.

I was implying that MAL probably has an accpetional amount of transgenders.
I doubt many transgenders will openly say they are one on an Internet forum.

Because there is such a thing as the distinction between cisgender and transgender.

The fact is, we dont treat everyone the same way. Its very important to know the gender of someone so you can treat that person right.

But yeah if someone is hiding or lied about the gender they should expect to be treated differently

How so? how should we treat people differently based on their gender? Should we treat men more harshly because they are tougher? or should we turn to women more for advice because they are more emotional? mere gender stereotypes.

Well we are different, so we should be treated different. There is no problem in that.

And we accept our differences. Stereotypes are good, they aren't evil, and most of the cases they are true.

I wouldn't like to be treated as someone I'm not, and I think its disrespectful when people try to treat everybody has something they aren't. We are not equals

Ah, yes. I remember how I was joking with my friend about walking up to a girl and saying,
Hey, I saw you standing over here and couldn't help but notice your...(beat) personality.

Case in point: Friend did it and got the girl. (They broke up, though.)

Gee maybre some people just are lazy and never updatre their profile to state their real gender/

I would have never did if someone hadn't questioned me about it.

I guess if you see MAL as a dating site to TRY and find a girl, you'd feel theneed to give a shit about this, but other than that, I see no reason to really care.

A lot of users feel their sexuality threatened when they can't tell who they are flirting with. Like if it turns out you've been enjoying a cheeky flirty with another guy or girl you will suddenly turn homosexual or feel dirty or something equally stupid.

Personally who cares what gender the person you are talking to is, all that matters is if you enjoy talking to them. No like you are going to meet up for a quick screw is it.

I wouldn't like to be treated as someone I'm not, and I think its disrespectful when people try to treat everybody has something they aren't. We are not equals
But most reasons people do get treated as someone they're not is due to stereotypes, in which they give harmful perceptions in others. In what way are they positive?

I agree that we should accept our differences, but I think what most people are trying to get across here is to give someone a general level of respect while acknowledging such differences. (eg. refraining from shaking hands or giving more personal space to a muslim). This generally applies to people of different ethnicity, religious background, ect.

I don't see a need to treat a gender with a certain level of respect, unless you're one of those southern/traditional people that follows gender roles strictly. If one doesn't have their gender specified, especially online, then its a clear indication that they just don't care and would like to have that general form of respect.

You can tell easily, simply by paying attention to their manner of speech.

If you can't tell, they might as well be whatever gender they are claiming.

Most users are male, and users marked as "female" tend to get more attention, so some masquerade as female for attention.
In the same vein, I know a handful of females that masquerade as males to avoid attention.

/thread

You never know for certain that the person is telling the truth. It is pretty sad that the female label automatically tends to garner more attention, though. -.-;

I'm totally in it for the attention, because there are so many perks in listing yourself as a female on an anime site. For example money, free stuff, and widespread fame.

It's easy to think what people gender.

1. check their fav.chara list (if most male chara. i bet it's girl)
2. location..(Mostly female user left it blank or said lying 'bout it ex: Planetarian, Aqua, Jupiter or something)
3. The way they're write/posted something..

But, become Trap isn't bad ya know! it's fun!

I think people can do with the gender thingy on MAL whatever the heck they want. I show my gender because I don't mind. Some people is ashamed, others are too lazy to put it on, others simply just don't want to show people who they are.

Nice necro. Not specified master race.
Kronie is mai waifu.
Enema is my master.
Shadowslave13 is my loli milk provider.
Flume is my dark magic buddy cop sidekick™.
And Afshar was my first MAL friend ;-;

I have coveted these people, so that I may one day sacrifice them in the name of love.

Well, I noticed that quite a few users on MAL don't specify their gender.

MAL also consists of persons who use it simply for the listing feature.
Personally, I don't give anything about the gender or at least try to not be conscious about it, since I don't view MAL (or any other board/community I'm registered in) as a "dating site", but a specialized board/community to discuss about certain stuff.
Well, the fact that I'm not seeing a gender symbol under the avatars is helping me a lot in that regard.
And since I'm not female anyway, I've got no problem in displaying my gender. Wouldn't know whether the same would apply if I were to be a girl.

My gender was female for a long time, but people kept on messaging me by private or in my comments, and it would be clear that they had only one thing in mind. Completely obvious about their flirtatious behaviour, some of them making jokes like "omg you should be my wife" or something similar after one message.

It's easier to be male.
