What would it take to change your most deeply held beliefs?

As we all know, discussions of various and sundry sorts arise on a regular basis here at MAL, and those discussions often lead to vehement argumentation. But it occurs to me as I scum the MAL forums that people likely have no real intention of changing their core beliefs no matter what sort of argument they may be presented with.

So the question arose for me, "What would make me reconsider my most deeply held beliefs?"

I'm not talking about beliefs like "I believe today is a Wednesday." I mean deeply held beliefs that are a part of who you are at your very core (if you have any): religious beliefs, belief in the existence of God, belief in the nonexistence of God, strongly held personal values, worldview, philosophy of life, identity, lifestyle, etc.

For example, I have posted a few times here on MAL that I am a nonreligious theist. It would be nice to just be plain old irreligious, but a belief in God is a huge part of my personal view of the cosmos and everything seems to make sense in context of that belief. And whatever God's plans for this realm entail, humanity is unique and central to them. So for me, contact between humanity and a sentient extraterrestrial civilization would completely shatter my theistic beliefs. The Bible simply leaves no room for the existence of other sentient mortals. So if we ever make contact with "aliens" that would be a game changer for me and the final proof that we do indeed live in a completely natural universe. Of course, such a first contact scenario will never happen because there are no extraterrestrial civilizations. (Says my worldview.)

So, what would it take to uproot your most cherished beliefs?

I can listen to reason and change, but it doesn't mean I have to like it. I just want to be the best person I can and believe only what I think is true.

Reincarnation.

It would take a lot to change my view of everything as it is right now. I'm a stubborn mofo. So basically it would be almost necessary for me to born as someone else with a different point of view.

Evidence and reasoned argument, like anything else. My primary concern is believing what's actually true, not what provides me comfort. Sometimes I do get carried away with being too emotionally attached to an idea though, but I strive to distance myself from that mentality for the most part.

Come to think of it, I'm not really sure I have any "deeply-held" beliefs in the sense that there's anything I view as totally sacred. I just have my beliefs about things that I hold to be true and I constantly try to refine them to be more accurate as I go along.

Evidence and/or an argument more reasonable than what I currently have for my beliefs

And a reason I should care, which is probably the hardest thing to do

Because even if someone presents a completely reasonable argument that I should consider, I rarely care enough to give it any serious contemplation. Once I've made up my mind about something, I tend to get bored with it and stop listening

Which is the reason why religion debates put me to sleep

Absolute 100% proof that proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that I was wrong. With that being said I'm the most stubborn person in the whole world and never really end up changing my mind about anything.

Probably nothing. I mean they can try to prove my beliefs wrong and we can debate about it, but that won't change anything. In the end i'm still sticking with with my religion and my beliefs. I'm pretty stubborn.

Intel Inside.

If science can prove certain beliefs of others. However, my own beliefs are rooted primarily in science, what's been proven plus what is logical.

One who does not admit their mistakes will stay a fool their entire life. That being said for me to change my beliefs i need solid proof and sound argument. If you introduce me to an alien i'll bealive they are real, if i have a relaxing chat with God i'll bealive he's real too. Speculation is merely speculation nothing else.

I used to be one of those Christians who goes around preaching to everyone, never giving up an argument, no matter how good of a point the other people made.

...then I started actually reading the whole Bible, rather than just the parts that the people at church wanted me to read, and it just all clicked. There's some messed up shit in there...

I don't like stubborn people who refuse to have their beliefs challenged. I am a reasonable person, and I enjoy listening to people with other opinions, and I have no qualms about changing my position if what I'm presented with makes sense and convinces me that my previous beliefs were inferior. Ultimately it boils down to what I feel is right, and sometimes I need another point of view in order to get a better perspective; I am not going to delude myself into thinking that my opinions and stances are the best ones. That's stupid. Really, I have no respect at all for people who refuse to change their beliefs, even if presented with evidence that proves them wrong.

My position regarding God's existence isnt really a belief, its just a position I hold based on probability. I dont have problems with giving this position up when the probability somehow changes (due to presented evidence for one side for example). I woudnt call that a belief.

My deepest belief is, that the perfect world is the one with maximum happiness and minimum suffering for the most individuals.
To change that, I had to be convinced with logic and reason.

Funny how that happens to all of us. Read our precious book and it turns us away rather than bring us closer to the Lord.

Well, one of my strongest beliefs is that nothing should be absolute and everything is on some level dependent on context, so I don't know, you do the math.
I probably regret this post by now.

Depends, on some things I could change my belief quite easily. I try to stay as open minded as possible because there is a lot out there. Though my religious beliefs wouldn't change because of personal experiences. Along with my moral values of being a pacifist. I would rather die than commit murder. Though I wouldn't just lay down and die, especially if I had loved ones waiting. So really depends on context of the situation.
