With all this gone

I looked at the silver wedding ring
So long upon my finger
I stared out our window
Into the night so long waiting

I put a hand to my heart
Wondered where it went
Hoped for a moment
That it might come back at this time

My soul disappointed me
And I set to the last task
The one final thing
The last thing that I cared for

I set the bolt to the door
Tied it with stiff fingers
Drew the blinds against the stars
Moved the chair to the stairs

Looked around at the fading light
Thought for a moment
That it might return at this second
But felt nothing once more

With less than resignation
With the last passion I could find
I raised my foot up
And said for one last time
