Thinking about it, there really is no point in discussing this right now. Just give it a few (maybe more? I can't remember how long it is) episodes and then we can discuss this more in depth. Can't speak for everyone else, but I had to word my post the way it was in order to tip toe around spoilers.

Because ripples are really effective only against vampires and pillar men, and except Dio those species doesn't exist anymore :P . Using them against the peoplewould be like using slingshot, when there are machine guns already.

If we have to compromise:
In-manga explanation: Stands can do better results than the ripple.
Araki-explanation: New kind of power to make things more interesting I suppose.

I find it funny that a lot people watching aren't used to seeing stands. You guys should really read the manga.

Eh, a lot of people just prefer anime in general to manga. I've been a huge fan of the jojo manga for years, but I can also appreciate people wanting to experience part 3 (and beyond?) for the first time through david's adaptation rather than the manga.

I agree though. After knowing what stands are from years of reading the manga, it's funny to see people just now learning how they work :P

Stands have become a central figure of Jojo that is also quite amusing to see people surprised by them.

It wasn't that long ago that I read Part 3 and was introduced to stands myself. I was not at all resistant to the change, though. Then again, I'd heard in passing before reading Jojo about the Stands so I actually thought the entire manga had that as the main power system. I was actually kind of surprised there was the Ripple system before it.

Joseph uses ripple in part 3 though, It's not really gone, but he doesn't have much use for it.

It's not even a common technique. Only a few people in the world know it and with the vampires' death, It has already served the purpose for which is was created. Jonathan learned it from Zeppeli who only found out about it by coincidence after a long journey of trying to find a way to destroy the stone mask. Araki doesn't really have to explain why people that use ripple don't appear in his story, like he doesn't need to explain why don't weird friendly alien spaceship pilots with transformation ability don't appear in his story, what are the odds of something like that happening?

Very cool fight. I like the Stand concept. Opening was fabulous as well (but again full CGI ugh...). And I said god damn as the pencil hit the eye. D:

Whether they are useful or not isn't very relevant. Ak-47s are no good against tanks but they don't just disappear when rockets and bazookas are produced.

As for which one I like more personally, it's ripples so far.. because the idea itself was so restrictive and limited yet we've seen it juiced out and it had so many creative ideas in part 2. Many writers introduce limitless worlds and don't even come up with stuff as good as his...

By the way... will the characters fight themselves or will it be all stands?

Man... after watching ep 1 I was so sure I was gonna like part 2 better.

I just liked Joseph way more than Jotaro from the very beginning (not that Jotaro isn't bad ass in his own way...)

But after watching ep 2 i am having doubts. Ep 2 was way better than I thought it'd be. If shit just keeps getting more and more epic like parts 1 and 2 did as they went on then part 3 just might be my fav... although from comparing the first 2 eps only I still like part 2 better so far. (Plus dat bloody stream, my gawd.)

But yeah, great ep. I'd rate it 9/10.

I really didn't think I'd like Jojo when it first came out in 2012, didn't even watch it.

Then someone convinced me and its like my fav anime/manga now lol.

Both, it's not simple as you might think. This is no card game and either casual action.

Stands are much more complex since that when they are injured the user himself is injured too, so think of Stands as a extension of their spirit/mind/force of will/body. Every stand is peculiar and "strong" on his own, their abilities reflect on the nature of the user, so leave it to your imagination of how could this be infinitely developed.

Yeah, AK-47 are produced still, but I don't think is a good idea to charge with good old Kalashnikov in hand against battalion of tanks. And in P3 every enemy has a Panzer.

Personally I like stands more than ripple. Hamon was just another shining power that boost up your attack, concept that we seen multiple times. Stands however are limited only by imagination of author, as the story progresses we will see some crazy powers (and designs). Another thing is that their fights relies more on quick thinking of characters than power levels. Even the weakest stand can defeat the strongest if user know how to use it. Do you like Joseph's trickery? You got even more of it with stands.

But Hamon is a martial art not a "thing". You cannot just make" Hamon" in the factory.

The current masters are very few (After part 2, it's only Joseph, Lisa Lisa and Messina). Yes they can teach but let's not forget that there's only 1 in 10.000 that can master it.
Also Their mortal enemy is gone and not threat anymore, so why bother trying to search for people to continue on a martial art where it has already done it's purpose.

So, it's already hard enough to learn Hamon, but it's even harder to find one that can potentially master and still willing to learn knowing that it doesn't have any purpose other than being a strong martial art.

That fight was very fun to watch! I did find it amusing that he was wondering at what point he got that cut rather than the fact he just fell down what seemed to be a hundred or so steps.

Why do people feel the need to ask questions that will obviously be answered within the show? Why do manga readers feel the need to answer said pointless questions? Why do I feel the need to ask questions about such stupid things? (Don't answer that.)

Certain posts in this thread aside, a Jojotastic episode.

I basically agree with you 100%. However-as much as I like SC- it`s sad to see ripple go down in obscurity in the Jojo world. Imagine the 1000 year tradition and how hard each successive generation of ripple master ( and students) worked hard. Some have probably died in the process of learning the ripple.

Yeah, but the purpose of the Ripple being passed down all those years was to allow the descendants of the Ripple clan to battle and defeat the Pillar Men. Now that the Pillar Men are gone, there's no real point in passing down the Ripple. In fact, I'd even say that it's a HAPPY thing that they no longer need to pass it down, since the threat of the Pillar Men is no more.

As I said, I understand 100% what you are saying but it still doesn`t change the fact that its kind of sad to see ripple be done with. Well for me at least. I understand that there is no more need for ripple since there are no more vampires or pillar man. Although when you think about it, there were no vampires for about 2000yrs until they suddenly showed up so it would be wise to keep the tradition going just in case.

I also understand that entertainment-wise, Araki has every reason to replace ripple with stands. But I would like to think that maybe Messina`s descendants or someone has kept the ripple alive.

Plus there is also a martial arts aspect. In a world of guns, police, and armies, there is little need for martial arts unless you are in a police or army but regular folks still practice it everyday for focus and discipline. Plus apparently, it keeps you young. Maybe in a Jojo world, modified version of ripple can be practiced. You obviously don`t want to go too hard core in your training and lose your life.

Another enjoyable episode. Man, I really like this part, I hope I won't lose interest, because so far it's amazing, I like almost everything from the humor (Jotaro's mom is hilarious) to the stands. I finally got to hear the famous catchphrase :D

That nurse was hot.

Nice episode, but either I was too hyped up or it's doing something I don't like that much compared to the previous season. Also doesn't help that I recognize that voice 100% from other shows.
Guess the good stuff is still to come. ヽ(゚Д゚)ノ

Really missing younger Joseph at the moment....

The "alpha male" air of this JoJo so far is kind of grating, to be perfectly honest. I'll give you that Jotaro's concern for his mom at the end gives me hope for me liking him, but it's kind of hard so far. I like Holly, her silliness and all, but I hate that the schoolgirls are all vapid jabbermouths. I'll try to take it in a positive way being that every character have over the top personalities, which means dumb silly side characters, but I can't say the same for the nurse. Was it really necessary to deal with her in such a suggestive way...?

Again, this was from an era where portrayal of women in shounen manga wasn't that great (even compared by today's standards). It was sadly the norm of the day.

I agree. The ripple felt more real and interesting in a way.
Also the ripple has been part of human history since forever(ancient men that used ripple) so just making it out like it does not exist is ridiculous.
Also if this stands are so powerful that a ripple user is useless then that kind of makes those ultimate ancient vampires like Cars that supposedly became the ultimate being as silly. Yes those vampires created the masks. They were suppose to be superior to vampires like Dio, and their leader even manage to become stronger than by becoming the ultimate being but he couldn't use a Stand?
How does that go? Sorry but the mangaka threw some horrible transition of how this Stands came to be.

Any living being can potentially awaken a Stand. Even a plant can have one. Basically anything with a soul. No reason to believe a perfect being couldn't have awoken one if given a chance.

Ripple is not of any use against stands because it was always of little use against anything that's not a vampire or a pillar man in terms of direct damage. It was designed to counteract stone masked related entities and a Ripple 100 times more powerful than Joseph's was needed to deal the same kind of injury to a human being as a normal Ripple would do to a vampiric being.

Araki got rid of Ripple because it kinda topped out at shit like "look I make sharp bubbles", he could do way way more with personal battling poltergeists that can have any power he can think with any ruleset and mechanic that he can think of. Stands are only ever limited by the author's imagination.

Sharp bubbles my ass. Joseph stop bullets with a bunch of hair with ripple on them and he could make a bodle of coke as dangerous as any gun because of the ripple.
Zebelin was walking on water etc. Also Joseph used the ripple on humans and i worked fine(remember in the first plane he crashed?).
The ripple had many ways to be used so sorry i don't accept all this "it's useless" bullshit.

Besides Dio is a vampire is he not?

Stands may allow the author limitless choices but they also seem like a cheap way to make his life easier instead of having to think even smartest ways of making the ripple work. Basically he just threw something that is easy instead of having to think and deliver smart writing.
But the problem isn't that he just threw them out of nowhere, the problem is that he threw the ripple away along with that(as i said above it is still a great power) like it never was and the facts that creatures like Cars had no Stand make them seem like nothing but an asspull for the authors convenience instead of something that was always thought and real part of that world.

Ripples are lost though. Did you forget they said that only a few of people in the whole world are possible candidates to learn Ripples? And even if there are some candidates, they have to train under the guidance of a Master and Joseph is hardly a ripple user anymore, since he neglected his training (he didn't know Dio was alive). Then he found out but it was too late.

Furthermore, Stardust Crusaders is an experimental series, he tried to invent something new (actually as he said in an interview, he was TOLD by his editor to invent a new power) because he couldn't obviously go any longer with the Ripples since the concept might be pretty cool but it's very very limited.

I will only say, wait more episodes to judge. Early SC is quite dull but as it goes on you will notice how Stands are a beautiful, original and funny concept.

Making barriers out of hair and launching bottlecaps is about the same on the creativity scale as making sharp bubbles.

When I said that Hamon can't deal direct damage I meant melting flesh, which is it's direct combat application.

I find your notion of Araki using Stands as an easy way out mistaken, because that freedom has pushed him to create some seriously unothodox shit (not just powers but also scenarios. Some of them in future parts can't even be classified as straight up fights) wayyyy beyond what he's done with the Ripple. I struggle to think of anything that Ripple can do that Stands can't do, at times in several completely different ways... other than melting the undead I guess.

Stands have been a staple of the series for the majority of it's run and have become one of it's defining features... all for a very good reason. I guess I can see how one could find them jarring early on, but the concept really develops into something wonderful.

I TOTALLY agree with you, SanderRX, but you have to appreciate the fact that EARLY Part 3 is pretty underwhelming after the conclusion of Part 2. So while these anime-only people that are saying that stands are worse than the Ripple are totally wrong, I also do understand where they're coming from based on what they've seen of stands at this point.

But to anyone that feels this way: I STRONGLY encourage you to stick it out. Stand battles (or I guess I should say "Stand encounters", since several of them are hardly even battles) get absolutely fucking insane as the story goes on.

I'm a bit disappointed with Stands giving the generic random shounen abilities and Japanese high school. This feels like a bit of a cash-in on the previous masterpiece level show, but at least Dio is back.

Actually, Stands were the inspiration for a lot of Shonen power systems.

Also, you have nothing to worry about. The stands with generic powers are only in part 3.

Stardust Crusaders was the first really popular manga to introduce the concept of each character having their own unique powers. Before this, everyone either used the same sort of "energy" like in Dragonball and Hokuto no Ken (or even Jojo Part 1/2), or it was all just martial arts. It might be something you take for granted now, but the idea of each character in a shounen manga having their own powers, like in One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Naruto, etc, was pretty much inspired by Jojo.
