Nothing wrong with it, MAL has an option to rate before the show ends so people do that. I do early ratings too but I usually change a few times before a show ends, and the final rating usually differs from the first impression.

Some series give a pretty clear feeling of what the series will be about. If I like the main characters and the suggested direction of the story, a certain expectation/rating is set and if they live up to those expectations the rating often stays the same. For example log horizon and Gin no Saji lived up to the expectations set in the first 1,2 episodes and stayed great.
Thus I do think that the first impression can be a good indicator of the future of a series. Often one episode can be enough to tell how much you like the characters and setting. Just leaves story development. Unfortunately things like Mahou Sensou happen.

Side note, I do not normally rate very early nor do I read the manga.

It's interesting to read about people's methodology for rating new series. It seems like a lot of people start with high scores then edit them down as series go on if it didn't live up to their expectations. I tend to work in the opposite way. I give all first episodes either a 5 or a 6 and modify it upwards as the series goes on. If by episode 3 I haven't given something a 7 or higher, it gets dropped.
