We screened it here in the theater at The Bass Pig's Lair last night. Audience comprised of one scientist who designs time of flight mass spectrometers, two electronics engineers, one broadcast radio cluster owner, one musician and her daughter (my neighbors), and myself, a retired broadcast engineer.

The Blu-ray was purchased from CD Japan and arrived in 3 days via FedEx. All menus are in Japanese. There's a storyboard version with audio, the main film, about a dozen trailers, and some interview documentaries. The main feature is the only one with English subtitles. Oddly, the audio was only 2.0 stereo.

The film was screened out our 12' 2.35:1 AT screen with 17kW sound system. The colors were bright and the mastering and transfer of the visuals was superb.

Despite the diverse range of political leanings of the audience, everyone enjoyed the film immensely. We discussed the film for an hour after the screening. I think many of the viewers weren't expecting quite so deep a film, and were especially impressed with a lasting feeling about the film.

-EDIT-
My wife and I watched this film for the second time (for me) this evening. Sitting in my prime center seat, it became painfully obvious that this film's audio is not in stereo! I tried both the Japanese LPCM track and the Japanese DTS track, both labeled 2.0, but neither contains any stereo content--all sound comes from the center of the screen. Now I'm wondering why Ghibli opted to use such a limited audio track, unless it was to mimick film sound from that era. This film could have been a much more colorful experience with the wide stereo soundfield of other anime movies. What's up with this?

It was a decision made by Miyazaki. A lot of the sound effects and background stuff he wanted can only be done in mono.
