Yay, just moved into uni. Damn, anime club is huge. The member count is like, 90. Ohmy! But certainly, in a uni with almost 90k students, it will remain a niche, heh.

Misconception #2316: Only few likes to openly go to a club and declare their interest in anime (though that buggles the mind since everyone shares the common interest, which is why we join clubs in the first place, but I guess somebody are too cool for clubs) and still remain normal in appearance and personality unlike the social outcasts that some people are suggesting. Though you are correct in that anime and manga remains a niche in North America society.

I feel lucky, heh. My first club meeting had pretty much everyone of various appearances, personalities, races, and cultures. None of the stereotypes for anime clubs actually fits in this club. Well, there is the occasional obese, with glasses, white/asian guy on the back somewhere, but there's also a bunch of girls who doesn't dress gothic or have cat ears, guys who are athletically fit, and almost everyone with a sense of humour.

I've seen some of there bulletins though, it ACTUALLY seems like they're having SERIOUS discussion, though I'm curious as to how serious can you really be.

I was surprised my school actually has one. Only its on wednesdays. I just hope at least someone would be familiar with Evangelion, Welcome to the NHK, Genshiken, and...hell just about anything that is not Naruto, Bleach, and Yu-Gi-Oh. I have little hope, but will check it out.

My school also has a "videogame" club, but the shit they only play is madden.

hey man; some hentai, albeit in a far more limited fashion than any other genre of anime, is actually fairly story centric, some even moreso than the sex. A good case for the latter is Mezzo Forte, which has quite the graphic, easily hentai level sex scenes. However more than 85% of the series is based on things completely unrelated to the sex. Ad even a few sex centric entries, like Shoujo Sect and Take On Me! manage to weave together pornography and a genuinely entertaining tale of romance with pretty nice results. And, don't forget, some of these series have some of the best art in anime, because who the hell's even gonna give ugly porn a try? There's easily a wealth of discussion to be had, and if not intellectual or at least borderline stimulating, just making fun of things like the terrible steak slapping/shake slurping sound effects is always something you could get down with (no pun intended).
I also somehow forgot the H-games. You can't even judge these till you've played Crescendo, which is great evidence that they can be very well plotted (but still sexytime).

of course, i post this all from the confidence of my dorm room computer. would i be so valiant as ti discuss my enjoyment of well crafted animated porn in front of a human audience? i'm not so sure.

They dont have one in our school :(

More than 3/4 of the school probably dont know what anime is >.> Theres like 100 people in my year and thats the biggest grade my school has had in like 20 years. Theres only like 5 people in the entire school who actually watch anime on a regular basis and the other students would probably shun them for watching cartoons so there is no hope of getting a club where I am

I never checked out my high school's anime club, mostly since it largely consisted of the type of fan I'd rather have nothing to do with.

Right now I'm the de facto head of my college's anime club--I'm one of four members, and it's more of a bi-weekly screening than a club, since I don't really like talking during anime with a group. On the bright side, they're pretty cool people, so I guess I'm satisfied with it.

Pfft. I could never dream of my school having an anime club. The junior high I go to is filled with idiots, who will more or less come in and trash, make fun of anime, and refuse to leave (or if they do leave, this is what they'll most likely say "I'm outta here. Too many retards who can't join a decent club.").

I seriously hate that. If you're going to publicly announce your love for anime, you would at least want it to be respected. If they don't like it, fine. Don't say a word and just leave us alone.

And that's not all. So far, most of the people I've met who don't really know anime that well usually say that anime and manga aren't different from children cartoons and comics. Yes, I get that anime is animated and manga is in the form of comics, but no need to call them childish! And I'm sure quite a few of you here can relate to me with this. There are MANY types of anime and manga, and the majority of them are not made for children. Would you call Black Lagoon or Samurai Champloo for children?

I don't think so! I've explained it to a lot of my non-otaku friends, and they always say that I'm denying the fact that it's childish!

I just signed up for my university's anime club, and so far it looks awesome. The people manning the booth were great, discussing shows that were NOT Naruto or Bleach. They had a Higurashi, Welcome to the NHK, and Black Lagoon boxed sets on display. They also had a Fate/Stay Night Poster and a figure of Hatsune Miku.

Tomorrow, we will start watching Higurashi. (SUBBED!) Throughout the year, we'll finish Higurashi, and watch Black Lagoon and Welcome to the NHK as well. <3 <3 <3 I am a happy camper!

Sounds like your Uni has a club similar to mine. Shall be helping out at Freshers Fayre this year at our stall to entice in some new underlings >=D. Luckily none of the people currently in our club are of the creepy obsessed kind, we have a few Naruto fans but they appreciate other, less mainstream shows as well, we watch all our shows in subbed format and have a good mix of new and classic shows.

Watched Nana, Trigun, TMoHS, AzuDai, Samurai Champloo, FMP Fumoffu, R.O.D. and TTGL last year, as well as a bunch of films of varying interest, the worst being live action Death Note movies which frankly were terrible.

As far as I can remember there's plans out to choose a selection of stuff from Hayate no Gotoku, K-ON, Soul Eater, Yakitate Japan!, Black Lagoon and a bunch of other shows this year.

Must admit I'd prefer to have no club at all than one filled with Narutards/obsessive otaku types etc. as those types of clubs will just reflect badly on anime in general.

Plus I'm pretty good friends with the organiser of the society and have managed to negate any chance of Lucky Star ever being shown there whilst I'm around ;).

I'd like to start one at my current college, but finding people who have any sort of decent knowledge about anime is difficult here...
