I can't wait for the anime and a video game to made out of said anime, the Vita doesn't have a Macross title yet.

Macross experts out there, does one need to watch all the shows in order to fully enjoy this one or is watching the 2008 one sufficient?

You don't need to see Macross II.

You won't even need to watch the 2008 series to enjoy this.

However, the 2008 series made some references to the '80s series. So to fully enjoy it, I would advice watching the first series and the 2008 series.

Wow, definitely going to watch. I loved the original Macross. I also need to get into Plus and Frontier...

What's with all these old franchises lately?

I recommend the original before frontier at least, if you are not up for the original read a detailed synopsis so you know the back story before starting frontier. Plus is great, Zero is good as well, 7 is meh.

With Macross in a state of licensing hell in the US, what are the odds that this series will be available legally?

The manga if it's made: minimal, the anime: zero

Big West and Harmony Gold are total dickwads.

YEESSSSSS!!!!

As a Macross fan this is the best and most awesome news I could get.

It's a real shame though that it won't be available internationally due to the legal mess with Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko. I'd be great if a new generation of fans could get into Macross.

Almost non-existent unfortunately. The anime industry is a small pie (and Macross a bit niche at that) and Harmony Gold (who own the Macross name in the US and several other countries) will demand a share of that pie. So the chances are minimal. I wonder though if maybe Daisuki streamed it directly from Japan there could be a loophole there somewhere, but I won't hold my breath.

Somehow this news doesn't manage to "wow" me. Macross Zero just didn't click for me - maybe the loooooooooong wait between episodes had something to do with it? And, to be honest, the original series is probably one of my least favorite mech series, ever. The Do You Remember Love movie didn't leave much impression on me as well.

Macross Frontier, on the other hand, is probably one of my favorite anime in the last couple years. In fact, I was so fascinated by the show and its music I ended up doing 12 AMVs for it. Which is kinda scary considering I never felt the urge to do AMVs before this show, and I bought the software and learned how to do it because Sheryl's songs were just that inspiring.

I wonder though, can Satelight handle this many shows at once? I hope they don't cut corners because they have too much to work on. It seems like the anime industry in general isn't so great at time management (or they just don't give themselves enough time perhaps).

This, compounded with the fact that budgets for TV anime aren't getting any larger either.

And best character in series - Roy Focker.

The genre died so hard it went through hell and brought Macross back with it. To be honest I kind of hope that Kawamori has as little to do with decision making for this show and it's staff as possible though since he's just so weird now. I'm kind of worried he'll try to force Mari Okada or Hiroyuki Yoshino onto the project and I don't think the former is a fit for a Macross series at all and the latter has just isn't a very focused writer.

Still though let the revival begin. Gundam and Macross in the same year again just like in 2008, hopefully without the fanbases at each others throats again since I'd kind of like to enjoy both without too much bullshit this time.

Hard to tell yet, depends on where it ends up taking place in the continuity. Macross has a reasonably long timeline like U.C Gundam now albeit with less entries across the way though I'd totally recommend checking them all out depending on how your tolerance for old/bad animation is since the original is one of those shows that has not aged well at all and DYRL is pretty much non-canon even though it's in the polar opposite category of the original series in terms of animation quality.

Considering that Macross has always been more of an idol series than a mecha series it's pretty surprising that it took so long for them to revival the series.
