How many episodes do you watch before judging an anime ?

In other words, what if your "trial period" concerning anime ? I'm not talking about the one that you fell in love with in the first episode. It concerns more anime than, when you start watching them, you think "meh..." but you know to have to give a try.

Usually, if by the 3rd episode I'm still not enjoying the anime, I drop it.
What about you ?

1, because i usually just don't have time to waste on watching 3-5 episode of something before deciding whether to drop it or not.

It really depends on how much potential I feel the show has.
The first episode plays a huge factor though.
I have been dropping shows like crazy recently, but I usually give shows a few episodes before I do so.

I watch the whole anime before I judge it. Judging it before I finish it? Ta, that would be quite silly-dilly of me.

Well I'm still making my system as I go but right now I don't start judging until after episode 3(not an actual grade but a rough estimate, I do wait til the end to do that.) and I won't drop the anime until episode 6. If I don't get half way either I will not give the anime a grade. Since I have 10 animes I plan to watch in the spring season I might move my drop down to 4 or 5 until it back to manageable number(maybe 8).

all of them, you cant truly judge something till you see it to its end, you can only judge what you have seen

Unless there's an arc that needlessly slow and uneventful, I try to watch an anime all the way through. I normally get a feel of things by episode 4 or 5 though.
Feel free to message me if you want to chat!

What I Look For In Anime:

1. A good atmosphere.
2. Great music.
3. Well-written characters.
4. Actual entertainment.
5. Awesome visuals.

Well, okay maybe it was a poor choice of words.
Let's say it is more "how many episode do I watch before judging if I want to keep watching it or no".

I usually try to get at least 1/4th of the way through a show before I come up with an opinion on it for myself. I'd never give my final judgement on a show unless I finish it though, endings are usually the most important factor for me in determining how much I like a show.

2 episodes. The first episode is usually the set up and introduces the characters, while the second episode is where the plot actually begins (if it's an anime with a storyline) and I decide whether I want to stay invested in the anime or not. With episodic anime, I'd get a better idea on how each episode will be after watching the first 2 episodes.

If its the first episode or two, I would get them done before judging on the entire series. If one recommends me to watch a scene from anime though, that scene would be enough if its bad.

Unless it's a long runner with no end in sight, that's what I do as well. I would have missed out on so many great watches if I followed a ~3 episode rule. Of course there's always speculation throughout watching it, such as my speculation that Samurai Flamenco is shit, but final verdicts are reserved for final episodes.

I don't try to judge an anime before it ends. That's the reason why I never dropped any anime, where I watched more then one episode.
Cause there are some anime's where I think, damn that's nice, but towars the end it couldn't hold its greatness. Or anime's where I thought, that show is lame, but towarss the end it's got better and better.

I don't like to judge an anime before it ends, because some of them tend to get better after the middle of it or the last episodes have a good plot twist that makes up for the previous episodes

One. If the first episode fails to interest me, then there is no point in continuing. First impressions are important.

I judge an anime roughly 10 seconds into the first episode. I am only willing to drop the series but still maintain my judgement from what I have watched after seeing at least 1/3 of the series.

I can drop at one episode. I mean, I'm aware that an anime can get better after the first episode, but if I come away from the first episode and find it lacking I don't think I owe it to the anime to keep going to see if it gets better.

depends on the anime.
Sometimes 1-5 episodes is enough, sometimes you need to watch the whole anime for being able to judge it properly.

Endurance is the key here.
I watch the whole anime through pain and suffering. Everytime I finish an awful series, I feel like a generic shounen hero who somehow overcomes all the odds stacked against him through guts, power, determination and the will to survive. Also by the power of friendship

For starters, the 1/5 thing is stupid. You don't need to watch a 100 episodes to judge a 500 long one.

But that said, longer series do need more episodes in general... and it depends from one anime to the other.

As far as episodic anime go, 1 is enough no matter the length.
For 1/2/4-cour non-episodic, 1-5 episodes
Longer series: 10-20. Give or take.

I usually try to stay in until the 6th episode on 1 cour series and 12 episodes on 2 cour series, but some anime are just to dull or cliche that I might not make it to the halfway point before dropping. There are some instances where I drop halfway through the first episode or after it.

it also makes the next show you watch feel way better

I would have dropped some anime that I ended up enjoying if I judged it only by the first episode. I give it a second chance to entertain me.
Of course, I haven't dropped anything yet sooooo.

I can see you

I watch the whole thing before making a judgment coz the final episode can make or destroy an anime.

Usually I like to finish it before i judge it, but if it is a long series like 100+ eps and i really don't like it by 30 or 50 i might just well dropped it. Although I'm very tolerant so that hardly happens.

It really depends. If I see/imagine 'potential' (might be simply me liking the setting despite everything else being bad, like in Coppelion or SAO) I might drag out the drop until I finish it (for 1-cour shows). Some shows give me no impression of any potential to develop into something I'd enjoy, so those may get dropped after 1 or 2 episodes. Usually if I don't drop a show by episode 7 or 8 I'll finish it (9-12 for 2-cour shows) and most drops happen between 3 and 6.
I probably regret this post by now.

Most of the time I watch the entire thing. If it's so bad I can't bear to watch anymore I just drop it at whatever episode I get tired on, so it depends really.

I don't do that because a prime example of what you do would be me dropping Katekyo Hitman Reborn when I was watching it. The first 15 or so episodes weren't that good but damn it got amazing at about episode 30. That's why I don't really judge anime on the first few episodes.

Ill start by watching the first 3 episodes. If Im still not interested Ill throw the anime on hold for a while. I hate dropping series so the only time I have dropped anime is either when I feel offended by the content material or if it royally pisses me off. I try not to pass judgement on a show until I finish it.
But that's just one opinion.

I usually judge depending on how many episodes the series has and go on from there. If it's a 13-26 episode anime, then the first 3-6 episodes should be good enough to get an idea of things. If it's longer then that, I usually don't say anything about a series until I've watched around 20% of it to get a good feel for how it is (mainly applies to long runners).

If I watched only 1 or 2 episodes, I would've never finished Steins;Gate and Madoka and that would've been a huge mistake. If the question is "How many episodes before you drop an anime?" it would depend on the anime length. If the show is 25 episodes long, I would watch 4 episode. If its 50, then I would watch atleast 8 episodes. If the question is "How many episodes before you rate an anime?" the answer would have to be the whole thing. You shouldn't rate a show or anything for that matter before finishing the whole thing
