space cowboys and jazz music wats not to like ?

I agree, everyone should watch it. Just the music alone is good enough.

But if I have to let people watch anime, it'd show them 5 Centimeters Per Second. It's so touching.

RahXephon or Escaflowne.

TBH I'd like to say Mahoromatic because it was the first non-100+ episode shonen series I saw, and I still friggin love it.

Cowboy Beebop, hands down. If the person has never seen an anime before it's a the perfect introduction since it's got all the trappings of a major hollywood movie, action, romance, and comedy all rolled up into one. The animation is also amazing, smooth and not over stylized. If your already an anime fan it's got all that plus a truly classic anime bad guy and a wonderfully well designed world.

This is tough decision, originally I wanted to say Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad for the great character development and relationships that are there within, then I was going to say Prince of Tennis so everyone could know how much Ryoma Echizen owns, but I think I'll go with Grave of the Fireflies. This has the best story I've seen, anime or american cinema, very sad story, but something you must see at least once in your life.

Gonna have to go with Last Exile :3

If it had to be a movie instead of a series, then I'd choose Kiki's Delivery Service. Pure magic in every frame.

As a definitive representation of anime, I have nothing I would really choose. There's nothing that truly represents anime, as it is a medium rather than a genre, and there is nothing out there that everyone will enjoy. Thus, trying to get people on how "good" or "enjoyable" something is comes off as pointless. If they're going to like it, they can be persuaded to begin with. If not, watching it will only increase their aversion to the medium.

That said, there are anime that have a much greater value than entertainment. The one that obviously comes to mind is Hotaru no Haka. I've always stated that it falls into that rare category of something everyone should watch, but no one should have to, so it would be a perfect example of something I would actually consider showing to everyone.

I would probably say the Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal OVA. This is something that everyone should watch, if they are into anime or not. I am sure my non-anime friends would love this OVA.

Something generally good that wouldn't apply to just a small amount of people's tastes. (so all of my favorites are ruled out)

I'd say One Piece or Gurren Lagann if that's the case. They both have a good balance of story, action, and character development. Though One Piece is more balanced in those aspects.
