Use this post to nominate 1 anime song. Read the rules over on the main page and don't forget to upload your track someplace.

All nominations will be closed after 10 tracks are nominated or until next Sunday rolls around. After that, we'll proceed to a voting phase. Feel free to discuss your nomination or other people's picks in this thread.

Note: Per the chatbox (or whatever you call it), I've declared that the 1 series per week restriction has been lifted. Lelangir did helpfully post a list of all the shows that she's composed music for, so try to maintain at least some semblance of diversity. As a general guideline, I think 4 tracks from a single series is probably pushing it.

Theme: Yoko Kanno
Yes, I do have to emphasize that I mean Yoko Kanno. Otherwise, people might be tempted to nominate a Yuugo Kanno track and I might be forced to accept it since I was silly and didn't clarify :3

I have a question. The Yoko Kanno piece i wouldn't mind nominating is from an album called X Clamp File, which is by various artists, focusing on themes for characters from the X anime and manga, though the pieces where never actually used in the anime. Am i alright nominating one, or would you rather me choose something that was used in a series?

I haven't even finished the first episode yet (but I will, and then some), but this short piece drew me in and left me wanting more. Mysterious, wistful, and entrancing, in my opinion. Does anyone know if she actually continues on this short theme?

Sorry to say, but that's the only version of the theme in the show.

You should be more clear--i mean for all we know the jazz pianist yoko kanno might have animu music >_> <_<

I believe it has to be in a piece in the anime, no matter how little or what anime it was.

as to this week's nomination, i'm simply torn. TORN.

Can I just nominate Space Bio Charge?

As omo said, has to be within the context of an anime.

@omo
Geez, there's a jazz pianist with the same name? Shows what I know :p

Alrighty, that's fine by me. That's why i asked in the first place.

But yeah hard decision. Gonna need a good think about this, though probably will be a piece from Turn A Gundam, or Escaflowne.

But then there's Macross Plus. Decisions, decisions.

May as well go with one of my favorite pieces. I was gonna choose 'Pitiful Sochie' from the third Turn A Gundam soundtrack, though to be truthful this here is my favorite Yoko Kanno piece. What an epic piece, what an epic journey. Make sure you listen to it all, because the last minute is fantastic.

For anyone who's wondering, here are the two pieces from X Clamp file composed by Yoko Kanno that i was going to choose between. Every Yoko Kanno fan should give them a listen to.

FUCK this is hard. I couldn't figure out what I was supposed to choose based on! Do I want one just for the fact that it's underrated? I could have gone that path and probably nominated Kakusei or something, but fuck it. I'm just picking my favorite.

Title: Call Me, Call Me
Anime: Cowboy Bebop

And by all means, watch it in context: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uc4A0vXxHUM

Of all of Kanno's masterfully written vocal songs, this is easily my favorite, with the glorious use of the percussion, strings, and epic bassline to create a truly moving and energetic ballad of unforgettable proportions. Steve Conte's voice is fucking incredible too, but man look at the glorious canvas it had to draw on! Fucking love the violins, especially in the build-up part and when Steve's voice cracks back in with just the strings playing. Gorgeous. Plus I can sing this song really damn well.

I might end up doing that...but I don't think I even have a clear favorite that fits the format of the song-of-the-week. I mean I interface with kanno's music in the form of soundtrack/era/projects, not by single tracks. It got kind of like that at some points in time (Cream PUF, the Bebop singles, Maaya Sakamoto) but it never really was like that.

I'll think about it some more :o

But I wil try tol nominate something that avoid similarities with already-nominated-pieces as much as I can.

Hmmm, was gonna nominate Words we couldn't say from Cowboy Bebop, which is my favourite from Cowboy Bebop, but kinda pointless since there's Call me Call me. And most of my favourites are tracks that everyone knows, so I'm just going to be different for the sake of different and nominate a piano solo track.

I think all this week is going to do is teach me is how much I fail at Yoko Kanno.

Half of what she's done is to series I've never seen, and the other half I mostly forgot the music or didn't especially care for it. All I have of hers is Turn-A. D:

edit: PRE-EMPTIVE BLASPHEMER! ACCUSATION

edit2: Okay the Macross vocal pieces count. But OTHER than that.

I thought pretty hard and decided to go against just picking a track out of Space Bio Charge.

I mean, you all have heard of it already right?

Screw this. I can spend weeks trying to pick out a track, or just pick petals off a flower for much the same effect. But I think I'll pick something out of Brain Powered just because we already have a Turn-A selection (IMO her best) and it's really a crap shoot between her Wolf's Rain and Brain Powered stuff (IMO her second bests) and none of the Macross Plus stuff really fits this club's format (IMO her most creative)

Some other notes:
1. I think Kanno has composed enough to allow for a 1-series-per-week limit, but that might be pushing it as we all have to coordinate.

2. this is actually a good entry for next week...

I fail hard at Yoko Kanno too ... =(

But I'll vote this, simply because I've heard my brother play it hundreds of times and I liked it when it was played in the first episode
Granted, Kanno fans would definitely know this so I apologize for lacking diversity

I figure I'll just go with what I was thinking of when I saw this week's theme, which is:

Title: Jyuukikaigaku [Serious Mechanics]

which may or may not be a good Yoko Kanno song but I love it nonetheless. But, then again, I have weird music taste sometimes.

well, don't feel bad or anything if you want to nominate another Kanno song from a show that is already represented. please. i can easily name 10 songs that are good from the shows already represented. so it's hard either way orz

that said, we still have:
Aquarion
Arjuna
Cardcaptor Sakura
Dai-Guard
Macross Frontier
Magnetic Rose
Noiseman Sound Insect
Oban Star-Racers
Please Save My Earth
RahXephon
Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight (I guess this is not eligible)

& yeah i'm not saying don't nominate a piece from a show that's already been said. Just think it would be pretty cool if each piece was from a different show.

While not responsible for the whole of the CCS musical repertoire, the 3rd OP theme is among the first things I recall of when I think of CCS. The song is peppy and light, yet the visuals are strangely Eva like.

EDIT: Oops, brain fart. Corrected the title.

Ten already. :( Need to be quicker. I was torn between Velveteen from GitS:SAC, Pulse from Macross Plus, and Tune the Rainbow from RahXephon: Pluralitas Concerto, but ended up dithering around unable to figure out which one to put forward.

Guess I'll save them for an appropriate theme.

EDIT: Actually, on even more reflection I'd probably have thrown these all out and gone with After, in the Dark / Torch Song from Macross Plus. Torch Song was my first exposure to her music and it still strikes a chord for me.

There are a few great pieces from Mac+. But I think it's tough to nominate a piece with a lot of repetition for this club thing, and that's the case for a lot of the stuff from the show. Torch song is one of the exceptions...

but I think I like stuff like Idol Talk more because, lol, how many kanno tracks you know has phone sex in it.

Revisit the theme again, perhaps. If you allow extra nominations then you probably need to adjust the scoring system too.

It's not as if she hasn't written enough stuff that we couldn't go back and do another week with her music as the theme. Though honestly (and I'll probably be crucified for saying this) I find a lot of her stuff incredibly standard and fairly uninteresting. :P

I'd agree on the former, but not the latter. It's not as blatant as say Yuki Kajiura, but Kanno's stuff can seem to run together. It's still pretty awesome what tends to come out though. :P

The thought occured to me that Kanno's individual pieces are rather standard and not really that interesting. You really do have to hunt for the more interesting stuff because they don't come by very often.

However what makes Kanno awesome is the way things are packaged together, and how diverse it all is yet how it still works together. It's one of the thing that makes me like Cowboy Bebop, actually. She is a master of context, and this really comes out in some of the arrangements in the latter half of her present career.

Which, once you isolate her music in a context like #MALKeionbu, it turns a lot more stale and sterile. But on an album-by-album basis they are all really quite interesting!

Perhaps not standard, but they have their fair share of pieces that are skippable, unremarkable and just plain boring to listen to on their own. There's some fantastic stuff in there but you really need to go through and weed out the rest of it.

Eg the absolute best collection of stuff from Bebop from a pure listening perspective, to my mind, is the live stuff from the Seatbelts' "Earth Girls Are Easy" tour that's on one of the Bebop soundtrack box sets. Maximum goodness without the fluff.

I'd say that about the Bebop score, though not Arjuna.

Then again i'm just saying that based on my tastes. If you're a huge fan of jazz, then the Bebop score will be right up your street.

in regards to fluff, I think it depends on how you use it. after all most of this is BGM, and in a live setting they can be pretty awesome when used correctly. i mean i didn't know Torika can be this awesome until i saw it at tanabata sonic for example...

From a pure listening perspective I thought that Bebop image cd that came out a few years ago was a good example, but that's a matter of taste more so. I enjoy listening to Arjuna OSTs, but the individual tracks are not so much skippable as it is standard (lol Survivor OST).
