MONOGATARI GOING STRONG.
"Children of Japan. And those who were once children. Listen! This is not a dream. This is not fiction. In reality, your superheroes were always fighting. To teach viewers courage and the meaning of justice! No matter how many enemies there are. No matter how strong evil is. Just remember. Does any another country have so many heroes? Has any another country been protected by multiple superheroes? Stand with me, friends! Remember when you used to watch your superheroes!
Once you may have given up this dream. But today, you can be a hero!"

Does someone has a benchmark per products ?

I mean :

- How many DVD/BR is considered to be decent ?
- How many CD/Single is considered to be decent ?
- How many light novel/Manga is considered to be decent ?

I'm not sure but I read somewhere that 40K of manga sold = 4K of BR but I might be wrong

I think you'll get different answers for this. But I consider 3-4k to be decent for tv series.

Movies and OVA's are different though, maybe 6-8k~ for movies? But the most important thing to remember is that 'decent' does not mean it has broken even. A lot of other things also matter. Most series do not break even from just disc sales.

Anime can be make 'profit' from various sources
-Merch(figs, video games, art books etc..)
-Original source
-BD/DVD sales
-Tourism promotion(Tamayura is a good example of this)
-Music(Symphogear is a good example of this)
-NHK-E(not a profit source, but that is not the goal of NKH-E anime).

I think you missed a single:
*56 *** *1,931 **1,931 *1 Saki Zenkouku hen ED "Kono Te ga Kiseki wo Eranderu" by Miyamori joshikoukou/ Nagamizu joshikoukou/ Himematsu koukou

By cost, a manga tankobon is ~10x cheaper than a Bluray so that's why people might say 40K manga = 4K BD but the profits and other things are not quite the same so I'm not sure you can quite say the same thing. I think manga can be successful while selling much less than 40K, especially if it is a one mangaka operation, drawing and doing the story. Other manga have analog and CGI drawing teams, etc. and probably need to sell more copies to break even.

The same is really true for anime as well. For some series and packagings, 4K sales probably means success while it means a loss for others. It is difficult to generalize.

Happy for much on this list including Otorimonogatari, Non Non Biyori, White Album 2, Machine Doll, Sakura Trick, Super Sonico, Mikakunin, Mouretsu Pirates and especially Wake Up, Girls!

Disappointed NagiAsu 3 BD didn't sell over 3011 and the DVD sold less than 595 (I presume). I guess Stalker overestimated...

But at least the 2nd ED got over 5.5k sales I guess.

Oh well.

2nd BD sold 2797 at the first week but at the end it sold 3,587, totally over 4182 with DVD counting, which is quiet good, not some best selling series but over the Manabi line is always a good thing. I bet the 3rd one will get over 4000 also, eventually.

Even though WuG(movie) sold 8.5k copies in its first, I still think its rather low if you take the low price into account.

I'm also thinking of posting the projections of movies/OVA's, maybe do it monthly or every 2 months? I'll just have to find a good way to easily find them on stalker, for those outside the top 100.

But I suppose I can just use amazon.jp to find them.

They are decent sales, especially for a NKH-E anime.

Interesting source. But yeah, they had strong tails not sure how strong v3 will have. The sales so far have been pretty good especially considering how poorly v1 did initially. Sorry if I'm sounding greedy, I just wanted to see it do well.

Also, volumes 1 and 2 had some kind of event extra right? Maybe 3 will drop because it doesn't right?

I wish I could have got the 6300 yen theater edition with the extra 6-girl version of Tachiagare in their "debut release" CD packaging but the LE I got is the better deal, 3800 yen for almost an hour worth of movie, OP bonus CD, marked up Mayu script, booklet. Just an awesome deal! Sadly the TV anime discs are not selling as well since they are almost double the price for slightly less anime, a drama CD and a booklet. Not nearly as attractive.

The TV anime OP and ED CDs sold less than the movie which is a bit telling unfortunately though perhaps they'll have longer tails.

According to Amazon Stalker, Gundam Unicorn Volume 7 should reach 49K :)

Seems good but it's only predictions nonetheless.

But after checking many sales by titles, their forecasts are quite right most of the time.

They are decent sales, especially for a NKH-E anime.

Really? Not too sure what NKH-E is, but I guess it's fine. Would love to have a sequel of Log Horizon some time in the future.

It's a large Japaneese channel. The thing is that it pays for all the anime it choioses to broadcast so studio don't care about sales than making anything for NHK-E.

Nice to see Railgun up there too. Not entirely related but I think a new LN for Infinite Stratos is coming out soon. Expect a third season in the future once there's enough material.

Most studios don't really care about sales though, as they don't see the profits from it. Unless they are actually part of the production committee.

That aside, I want to add that Log Horizon is a day-time anime, its late-nigth anime that need disc sales.

There should be enough material for IS 3 already considering how season 2 went, just add some ecchi-comedy episodes and it's good to go, f*ck plot, just give me my girls :D

There hasn't been a high selling single (50 k), except for idol stuff, for a while now, maybe they're waiting for the spring season.

With only seven 50k+ sellers(SnK just barely made) in the last 14~ years, it is no surprise that it has been 'a while' since we got our last 50k+ seller.

No idol show ever hit 50k though, unless you see the macross series as an idol show.

Single. As in music. Not Blu-rays.
Bestselling light novel volumes of the year/all time* (and more in the same club including weekly series ranks etc). <-- No longer being updated. Sorry.

I'll be updating this on a irregular basis(every month, or 2 months or when a new OVA get announced or a movie or whatever).

I doubt I got all of the OVAs and movie releases, but this will do. Since a lot of OVAs are only included in the Manga/LN volumes, I only added them so that I could post the release date.

Log Horizon is an anime funded by the government I heard, so its sucess is based on views rather than sales. Anything sold is an extra.

As far as I remember in most of cases they are. JUst that their part in committee are minor.

Could someone explain to me why I can't seem to find any magi vol1 or vol2 blu ray sales? Or are they just too low and cut off?

Ultimatemegax's 2013 production committee speadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AjoQRm4_zEPgdEp6alRCWFMxNEVJN2Z2c2ktLWxJTEE#gid=1) is a good source for checking this.

A quick scan (I may miss some, didn't spend a lot of time on this) shows:
8-bit: 3 (3rd, 4th, 5th)
ACGT: 1 (4th)
A-1: 1 (3rd)
AIC: 3 (2nd, 3rd, 5th)
Douka Koubou: 2 (3rd and 5th)
Gonzo: 3 (1st, 3rd, 3rd)
JC Staff: 4 (3rd, 4th, 4th, 5th)
JM Animation: 1 (7th/below)
Kinema Citrus: 1 (5th)
Kyoto Animation: 3 (1st, 1st, 1st) *
Madhouse: 1 (5th)
Nomad: 1 (5th)
PA Works: 3 (2nd, 5th, 7th/below)
Production ID: 4 (2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 5th)
Satelight: 2 (3rd, 5th)
Seven Arcs: 1 (3rd)
Shaft: 2 (2nd, 3rd)
Silver Link: 3 (3rd, 3rd, 7th/below)
Studio Deen: 3 (3rd, 3rd, 4th)
Studio Gokumi: 1 (5th)
Sunrise: 6 (1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 4th)
Tatsunoko: 2 (3rd, 3rd)
TMS Entertainment: 1 (1st)
Toei Animation: 2 (1st, 3rd)
TYO Animations: 1 (3rd)
White Fox: 1 (7th/below)
Xebec: 1 (3rd)
Zexcs: 1 (3rd)

Again keeping in mind I did this quickly and my numbers are likely close but not exact...

58 anime had production committees involving an animation studio. This is out of 125 he provided the information for, which is just about everything we'd track sales of.

9 shows had an animation studio leading the committee. Most of those are two companies: 3 KyoAni (who independently owns most of what they animate now) and 3 Sunrise (Bamco's animation subsidiary). Other than that, one Gonzo, one Toei, one TMS.

4 shows had a studio in 2nd place. everything else was 3rd or worse. 3rd-5th seems most common.

In short then we can take these numbers as ballpark estimates:
46% of 2013 anime featured an animation studio committee on the production committee

11% had a studio in 1st or 2nd place.

7% had a studio in 1st place, this spread across only 5 studios.

Overall more shows have studios on the committee than I'd have guessed, but it's still only half at most and almost 90% of them are third place or below. Also being on the committee does not tell us what the arrangements were. Just being there doesn't automatically mean you have much (if any) investment in how the BDs sell - this will vary from committee to committee.

OK. About half is not "in most of cases" but still not a few. And reread my post. I said that studios mainly have minor part in the committee just marked that generally they still have it.

What needs to be reread? Aren't the two of you in agreement that studios do not often play major roles on production committees?

Anyways that's interesting to see laid out. Also, don't a lot of studios often work on the same show on various aspects of animation (i.e. work that gets contracted out) but they aren't part of the production committee?
