I know with my dad everytime he would see me watch an anime it would be:

"-Why do they not look Japanese?" ( you know cuz of the different color hair and the huge eyes)
"-Soon you are gonna be speaking Japanese"( I often watch subtitled animes)
- he gets annoyed with the voice acting and some of the opening songs
- and the worst is when he calls one of my favorite character "Gay" just because they are handsome looking =(

But I got to sit him in front of some Hayao Miyazaki movies which he really enjoyed . And he really loved Golden Boy and some episodes of Trigun.

My parents barely know I watch anime, I may have brought it up once but I doubt they remember or even knew what I was going on about at the time even when I explained. I always pause when anyone comes in the room while I'm watching anime and just switch to a different screen. Personally my parents think all my hobbies are a waste of time and some how justify that doing extra revision on stuff I already have down is a better use of my time. But there not completely unsupportive, they at least appreciate my passion for gaming and my dad did willingly take me to a gaming event once.

My mother simply finds it bizarre I prefer to watch something that's in Japanese, commenting that I must hate my own people. That comment isn't too far from the truth, actually... :D

On a *kinda* related note, there was this time when I had an anime OP song playing with high volume and my bedroom window open. This guy was walking past my house and actually, stopped, turned and stared at my window, before moving away as fast as possible.

Yeah, pretty much the same for me, none (but 1) of my family know I watch anime, I keep it secret and have done for...uwahhh around 3 years.

I could probably get my mom interested with a show like Deathnote, Higurashi, or Monster since she likes thrillers/mysteries/horror. She seemed interested and asked many questions about it when she saw me watching a show one day.

The rest of my family however is indifferent though my dad says I should stop buying so many dvd's and manga.

My mom is probably the one person in the world who doesn't think my watching anime is nerdy XD She just sees it as a TV show, not a "cartoon". I'm grateful. But she does ask "Don't you ever get tired of that stuff?" a lot.

They probably think I'm childish but I don't care what others say :p Also, my mom tends to refer to anime as shit when I rather watch it than doing what I am supposed to do, like schoolwork. But I don't care about that, either :).

My grandpa already watches anime, although he watches different stuff than myself, and he gets all of his anime from TV, so everything he watches is dubbed, whereas I prefer to download subs from the internet. He has a hard enough time paying attention to TV, so I couldn't imagine him reading subs.

His anime-watching habits are rather sporadic, but he loves manga. He reads alot more manga than he watches anime.

Also, he wants me to get a printer so I can share my anime-related image collection. Creepy.

Yeah, they both condescend on the fact that I watch it. At this point, I dont care anymore. Just got to learn to accept it.

My mom doesn't think it's childish, she's open minded enough to know there are different forms of entertainment. She also understands that animation can vary from little kids, to pornographic. and she knows by watching over my shoulder, that i'm a fan of the seinen anime.

They make fun of it all the time o_o. Ok, they've been cutting back a bit lately but especially when I'm watching TV and e.g. my dad wants to watch he'll say something nasty for sure. ("Japanese don't have such big eyes." xD "Watching those demons again?")
My mon doesn't like it as well but at least she doesn't comment on what I watch xD.

There is no "this", and it's eh not he.

Adding a single word to the beginning doesn't really change it that much, I have seen it that way before, and the 'he' was because I've seen people correct the 'eh' before, so I was not entirely sure which was correct >_<. Incidentally, in the context I like the sound of having 'this' there better.

So, I suppose I did commit a moderate meme-usage blunder, but I'm sort of okay with that, honestly.

I think Asako is a pretty cool guy. Eh makes a good point and doesn't afraid of anything.

That's how it goes. :3

Anyway, my mom likes anime too, but not to the extent I do. She really got into Fate/Stay Night.

My 10 year old brother has shown an interest in anime (especially Death Note, he loves all my Death Note stuff) but I think he's to young to watch the anime I watch. Not so much in age but more in maturity. Maybe I should show him Naruto when I get it on dvd.

That's how it is. She also said that Death Note looks kind of interesting to her, since I have a lot DN Merchandise at home ^^

I'm pretty comfortable watching anime around my dad. Whenever he walks by, he sometimes makes harmless jokes about some of the dialogue (which actually make me laugh). He used to watch Kimba and Speed Racer as a kid, so he's familiar with anime.

My mom...well, she doesn't really support me with my interest in anime and once is a great while, she bashes it. Once, when I was watching DNAngel on the Anime Network, she said, "There's a channel dedicated to this s***?". I got pretty offended and walked out of the room. Ironically, she tells me to have a good time whenever I go to Anime Boston and, after the con, wants to see pictures. She sometimes asks which characters certain people are dressed as. Anime and my mom have a strange relationship.

Oh, and I've been called strange by my sister to the point where I now take it as a compliment. She also likes anime, too, but not as much as me.

My mother is a Christian and wants little to do with anything that goes against her beliefs. So naturally, she wouldn't be interested in most anime. She also brings up Pearl Harbor whenever we're talking about the Japanese people, and says something along the lines that the Japanese can't be trusted. Naturally I replied by saying to her that an entire country shouldn't be judged by what the government and military does.

Sometimes she'll try to make a joke by saying that I'm going to turn Japanese one day, which I suppose isn't too far from the truth--considering how much I like the Japanese culture.

She's never actually watched an episode of any anime, she just occasionally walks into my room whenever I'm watching it, and usually doesn't pay any attention to it.

My dad...well, he's never cared what I do. Unless it affects him in some negative way. We have a mutual apathy towards each other.

As for my two "friends", I've been able to convert them to liking at least one or two anime series. Being that they were both male and horny, they liked the first episode of Elfen Lied a lot, and they enjoyed the rest of that series.

And one of my brothers also watches anime, sometimes he asks me if I've been watching any good anime, since I sometimes suggest anime which he might like.

Overall, my parents don't bother me about it much. They just don't like me spending time on the computer, and when I ask my mom what I should be doing instead, she suggests doing chores... -.-;

Im sure my dad would make fun of sorta, he would give a stupid laugh and my mom would always ask me questions about it or complain and my sister might do both because she has an Xfriend whos an inuyasha fangirl so she kinda ruined the image of anime for my sister lol. I watch anime in secret so these things dont happen.

...Actually when I think of it, I'm not sure my dad even knows I'm watching these XD..

Oh, he knows allright, but he has absolutely nothing to think or say about that...

My mom on the other hand, kinda likes it - the fact I like something so much (if we judge by what she says to me), still I have a feeling that she's kinda dissapointed a little bit that I have that big interest in them XD
Anyway, she's supporting it.

Heh, pretty much exactly the same thing happened to me, but it was my step-dad who saw it and I'm a straight girl.. so explaining why I was watching such a show was very difficult ^^; he still believes I'm completely homosexual.. ah well XD

Anyway, I've replied to this thread before but I'll give a more updated reply now ^^ my mum isn't that bothered as long as I put my school work before anime, but my step-dad is so against it. I think it's more to do with the fact that I love it so much and am pretty much obsessed rather than it being anime >.< he believes that anime stops me from going out, which is a lie since I go out as often as I can, considering I live in the middle of nowhere with only one bus that runs very early in the morning =.=

It's difficult having parents who like to control =.=;

My parents are cool with it. I mean, my mom isn't interested in it or anything but she knows that I like it and all that. My dad was a big Speed Racer fan when he was a kid, so he's cool with it to the point of sometimes showing interest. I'm pretty lucky to have such chill parents, actually. :)

My dad's completely fine with it. He's even wanted to watch it with me a few times. ...However, the weird thing about him is the fact that he only likes watching it if it's dubbed, because he finds subs to be distracting. I've been trying to get him to watch a few episodes of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni with me in subs, but he won't do it. >.>;

As for my mom, she used to watch Pokemon with me when I was little, but other than that she doesn't really care. She knows I like it and will buy manga for me when I ask for it (because she loves spoiling me =P), but she doesn't really show any true interest in it. As long as it makes me happy, she's happy.

Mom: "Goodness Cassidy, you're watching Japanese cartoons?! But the Japanese make porn!!"

Then I sigh, put my headphones on, and ignore her.
