That reminds me of something...

Top questions I hate being asked by shallow kids at school:

>Do you speak Japanese?
>Why do you have songs on your iPod that you can't understand?
>How do you read those things? (in reference to manga)
>Oh my god is that porn? (Jeez one freaking panty shot and they think it's xxx material)

Makes me mad that they make assumptions only about the medium based only on certain aspects of the Japanese culture included in the medium. Yes, the Japanese are a little more open minded about nudity than Americans happen to be, but that doesn't make every flash of breasts is necessarily used in a pornographic way.

That and the fact I get this kind of flack from people whose parents take them to rated R films annoys the hell out of me. If it's a rated R film you're gonna see a lot more than just a womans chest.

Any of the above is my two cents and is only my ranting. No offense is intended in any way, and I apologize if it does offend anyone.
Heh... I get that a lot in school. I'm a Super Robot Taisen fan, and I play the games during breaks in school, and occasionally, someone will ask me if I understand what they're saying, or how I learned how to play such a "complicated" and "elaborate" game. One time, I considered watching some anime during school breaks too, on my PSP, but reconsidered it when I remembered that the people in my school are the type of people that ask questions like that. And of course, I can't really find other people in school who are interested in anime either, except for one guy who watched Mazinger Z when he was with a few relatives in El Salvador, and another that won't stop talking about hentai or ecchi anime.

My dad doesn't really care if I watch anime, so there are no stupid questions from him. But my mum always asked : How old are you again?? There are so many other things you can watch, why do you watch crap like that?
It makes me a bit mad, because she doesn't even want to understand it and why it's so much fun to watch animes!

One time when my friend was over she was shocked when she saw that my friend watch animes with me and she shouted : The world has come to an end!
She always thought my friend wouldn't share my hobby =)

All i know is that my dad previously watches Astroboy.

Well, i usually watch my anime with my own PC in my own room, so it is alright.

I only hook it and watch it with the family's telly if it is stuff like Macross Zero or Yukikaze.

My mum actually enjoyed Fullmetal Alchemist. I do explain to them that it's not a kiddy cartoon, but is aimed at people of all ages, depending on the story. They don't ask, but with them I always feel I need to justify myself.

The best and most MAL-famous example of a parent loving anime would probably be Chelle. She has two daughters on this site, and they all love to watch anime as I recall. I don't think Chelle has been on MAL lately, so I'm a little surprised that Mimiko or Dragon_Empress haven't noticed this thread yet.

Ooh, I remember hearing about this and thinking 'I want my family like that too!' lulz
I don't know if I would like it if my mom posted on forums like this as much as I did. I don't need her trolling me. >_>

That's a little...harsh? Chelle is (she's kind of in a identity crisis right now and isn't watching anime at the moment) one of the most fun people to talk to on MAL. I really hope she comes back soon.

(PS: I need to keep posting in these serious threads, or I'm going to keep gushing the word Mayumi in the spam and MAL Moe threads)

If you knew my Mother you'd say the same. >_>

She's not really the best person to talk to about this kind of stuff because she doesn't have the attention span for it. So I doubt she could sit and post on forums as much as me anyways, but I still wouldn't like i if she did. Some parents are cool though, and if they're chill with their kids hobbies and stuff then I'm game for parental posting. :P

I guess I'll have to hide the fact I've used up around that amount in less than 6 months (and it's only because I've been buying games as well). So really, that amount in 2 years is allright in my eyes. Guess parents always consider any money used in a hobby wasted money though.

We're all really just wasting our money, no matter what it's spent on. Whether it be going to the movies, or buying a snack. If it's something you don't need for survival, then it's wasted money. But then, entertainment is a necessity, or we'll get so bored that life becomes dull and not worth living. So maybe that stuff isn't really a waste. I guess it depends on how you look at it huh?

My mom just laughs about things I tell her from anime and she always says: it's so beautiful drawn xD
And my dad makes sometimes jokes about, like when he ask: what are you going to do today? Let me guess.. anime? (and he can't even say it right xD)

It really does. The moment life becomes a chore it's the moment living isn't worth it. You have hobbies for that reason. To get us through an otherwise dull life.

Wow, that's both awesome and 'wtf'-worthy. I think that was around the same age I saw Akira - but even that wasn't on the level of Urotsukidoji XD

WTF indeed, but i was overjoyed at the time.

And after watching it my sense of humour became rather black and perverted.

Then that justifies any money spent doesn't it? Whether it be for a bill which is direct to survival or an anime which is to spice up life. It's all necessary. So that clearly means that anime isn't a waste of money, however, it can be spent on more important things.

My parents sometimes watch anime with me... Doesn't seem like they always get the plot or anything though. It's kinda sad that you lose your imagination as you get older. I dun wanna...

Because they always nag at the news that watching a monitor too long is bad for your eyes.

My parents don't really say anything but when I was younger my dad would always make fun of Tenchi Shows. He'd make fun of how Ayeka and Ryoko fought over tenchi and it got to the point were I yelled at him to stop. He hasn't said a thing bad about my anime since xD

My mom asks questions a lot because from time to time she sits and watches with me, more or less showing interest in it.

She seems to criticize my manga buying, though.

Hmm, well, at first I was super embarrassed to like anime, so whenever my parents would come into a room when I was watching ,I'd shut off the screen and kinda freak out. They thought I was watching porn, and so anime has never really appealed to them. They think its a total waste of my time, and my mom nags me constantly for being in the j-pop club at my school (she doesn't seem to realize my friend--the president-- would kill me if I didn't go. I also happen to supply the movies...) and whenever I say anything about buying anime or manga she just sighs. My dad could care less, he just thinks it's funny <.<

My dad doesn't give two shits, infact we watch a lot of dubs together. Although, Noir kinda left us with some erm...akward moments. XD My mum never really supported it though, especially after I started buying DVD's. I mean god, ONE episode of Love Hina and she's never really looked at anime the same way. Recently though, this happened while I was re-watching Strawberry Panic;

Mom: -walks in- So, whatcha watching today? More peverted cartoons?
Me: Yeah, Japanese lesbian cartoons.
Mom: You're kidding right?
Me: No.

She doesn't ask about what I watch anymore. Infact she kinda just...leaves the room when she catches me watching anime now. Maybe I shouldn't have been so truthful in my answer? XD But her expression...god that was priceless.

My parents think Miyazaki is the end all be all of anime. They don't watch much anime and they tend to prefer stuff that resembles Miyazaki like Mushishi. They loved Mushishi. They don't like stuff that's too heavily sci-fi or fantasy. They're this way with real movies/TV as well. My mom to this day still doesn't get what The Matrix is even about. I tried to get my mom to watch Crest of the Stars once and she got bored with it immediately which is a shame. I also tried getting them to watch the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I don't think they got that it was supposed to be a comedy and they should be laughing and I think the breast-grabbing threw them off. Most oddly they enjoyed Le Chevalier d'Eon. I guess the historical fiction aspect was fascinating for them.

My parents don't really show much interst in it, but my mom do comment that I should spend more time on schoolwork than atching japanese cartoon.. But she has actually asked and seemed a bit interesested once, but it hasn't happened more than once. My dad don't care, except if I sit all day watching anime as I sometimes do on a weekend or so, then he goes nagging about using my freetime more wisely and wants me to work a bit more on my schoolwork...

Ah, well my dad occasionally watches anime with me if I burned it and am watched it on the DVD player (with subs). (He also notices a lot if I re-watch something. "Didn't you watch that before?")

Other then that, he's checking around to DL anime for me if I'm not around and supports me in the animation business. (Transferring to Japan, or at least trying to) Also, I sort of got him into J-pop/rock. But that was mostly due to Final Fantasy rather than the anime self I guess.

As for my younger brother, he's quite interested in anime but doesn't really find the time (friends or games xD), so I often have to convert it into psp mode and then he'll watch it with an all-nighter / during class.

- "Anime, mom."
- "Oh, ok" *leaves the room*

So no, they don't make fun or say anything else o.O'
Well, they don't know a lot of English too, so I don't think they can tell when I'm watching something in English or something in Japanese :P
So no problems about it either, since almost everything I watch is in English.

Lucky. >_>

I remember this time I was listening to Japanese music and my Mom and her Boyfriend bust up laughing at me because they thought it was funny. And then my Mom said, "well sometimes you can't even understand the words in English songs." So I guess she has a little consideration.

Yeah. Not that she'd watch it, but she doesn't mind I do. To her, a cartoon is a cartoon. It's not a cartoon that will define people's sexualities. I showed the OP to Strawberry Panic to her, and she thought it was very pretty.

I would laugh if someone inserts random japanese words/phrases in the middle of a conversation. I'm a freak when it comes to that. Either stick to one language or don't talk wth me at all. Spanglish just drives me nuts.

Hm, I can play with Japanese if I'm talking to a friend, but I'd never do it in a normal conversation. Especially if the person is trying to sound 'cooler' by speaking random Japanese. I'm proud of what I manage to grasp of Japanese, but I don't use it to gather attention or anything.

For some reason, when something is really cute, "kawaii" comes instantly to mind and sometimes I need to refrain from speaking it out loud. I dunno where the habit came from.

My parents think I have some grasp of Japanese sometimes, but I insist I know very little.

I watch anime on my notebook and when one of my parents come in, I close the screen and stuff. They do know I'm watching 'cartoons'. Just don't want them to see it xD

They don't say much about it unless money is involved. xD

Well, I agree, kawaii just sounds so cute, so it emphasizes it more. But when people do it to sound cooler, it just drives me nuts. And I guess since I'm a Spanish speaker and a lot of people I know like to mingle Spanish and English, I've learn to hate the practice of using two languages at once.

Hahaha. I know my dad would kill me if he knew that the money I'm earning now is going into Manga/light novels. But he doesn't have any hold over me anymore so I just kind of shrug it off and even laugh.

My mom saw 5 eisodes of Gundam seed with it. She saw the last episodes of Robotech and wanted Rick hunter to pick Lisa hayes. Other than that she loves the music and listens to me when I talk about anime or manga. I told her about Monster, thats its my fave anime and manga and she listened as I explained the plot and looked at the books.

My dad makes fun of me(oh your watching(or buying) or jap crap again) but he does watch it with me. He likes Gundam Seed, Rurouni Kenshin, Trigun and Inu Yasha(don't ask). He doesn't watch the whole seris. Just a few episodes.

He hates Bleach, One Piece(haha we agree on something) and MAR(boo hoo).

I have yet to get my younger sister(who makes fun of me for it) to watch some anime. Not even one friggin episode.

The one that gives me the most hell for it is my uncle. He always gotta mention Peral Harbor.
