more than a quarter of surveyed South African men admitted to having raped

Time Magazine reports:

South Africans received a horrifying measure of just how bad their country's rape crisis is with the release this week of a study in which more than a quarter of men admitted to having raped, and 46% of those said that they had raped more than once.

The study, conducted by South Africa's Medical Research Council, reveals a deeply rooted culture of violence against women, in which men rape in order to feel powerful, and do so with impunity, believing that their superiority entitles them to vent their frustrations on women and children. The men most likely to rape, the researchers found, were not the poorest, but those who had attained some level of education and income.

Researchers interviewed 1,738 men of all race groups, in both urban and rural settings in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, provinces marked by high rates of AIDS and poverty, and the men answered questions about rape and HIV using small handheld computers in order to guarantee anonymity. Of those admitting rape, 73% said that they had committed their first assault before the age of 20. According to the researchers, many of the study's participants appeared to see no problem with what they had done. These findings, says Mbuyiselo Botha, a senior program advisor at Sonke Gender Justice, an advocacy group for abused women, "highlight the lack of remorse among men in our country, and also the attitude that women remain fair game for us." Men, says Botha, "continue to abuse even to the point of getting away with murder."

South Africa has one of the highest incidents of reported rape in the world. The most recent statistics show that 36,190 cases of rape were reported to the police between April and December 2007, though experts believe that number only accounts for one out of nine cases. But the number of rape cases that make it to court — let alone result in a conviction — are far fewer.

Researchers said that many of the perpetrators reported having bullied or been bullied. The study also underscores the huge divide between South Africa's liberal constitution, which enshrines the rights of women and children, and "the realities of a society where poverty, inequality and violence are rife."

Gender advocates say that the 2006 rape trial of prominent politician Jacob Zuma was incredibly damaging to their cause. Zuma, who was elected President this year, was tried and acquitted of raping an HIV-positive family friend. He told the court that the woman had dressed provocatively, in a traditional wrap-around kanga, and that it was against Zulu culture for a man to leave a sexually aroused woman unsatisfied.

Zuma's plainspoken views as a polygamist and a traditionalist appeal to many men who feel adrift in a society that defines men by the material trappings they attain, says Aernout Zevenbergen, author of Spots of a Leopard, a book on masculinity in Africa that is soon to be released in English. "Rape is a signal of a society that is sick to the core," Zevenbergen says. He points to South Africa's long history of migrant labor, in which men left home to work in the mines, as having broken apart generations of families. This system set the stage, he says, "for an epidemic of young men who, in the absence of positive male role models, are now consumed by a sense of anger and entitlement."

"What we have are the wounds of men creating wounds in women, creating wounds in children," says Zevenbergen. "Who is going to stop the vicious circle?"

I was feeling really sorry for myself today.
I was thinking about how my problems were so huge.
But this survey convinces me that I should be more grateful for my life.

Does this mean a quarter of south african women have been raped or was it only one woman and they all took turns?

So if we consider that lot's of them raped more than once, basically there isn't a decent looking woman in South Africa that hasn't been raped.

Ouoo!!! Imagine your sadness if you live in South Africa with your wife and the doctor comes out and tells you, congratulations sir you are the father of beautiful little girl. I would follow her everywhere with a machine gun and a bazooka on me just to kill the motherfuckers that come close to her.

Well, they would have had to been in the pit themselves as well, right? There's no such thing as remote rape (as far as I know).

Who knows maybe that's true also. They might rape each other.
But even if it isn't, it will happen when all the women get out of there because they are sick of those guys raping them.

lol. Do you think people wouldn't get raped if they knew they could get away with it? The only reason why people in South Africa are raped all the time is because they get away with it multiple times. They answered a fucking survey about it lol

Ever heard of female circumcision?

What women do to women in Africa isn't much better.

Tends to make weird Japanese otaku males look not so bad eh, just weird. They only want to look under your skirt or mary an animated person.
While not technically anime, currently I am a big fan of Hatsune Miku.
At least I can go see her in concert.

Well. With South Africa's achievements since the abolishment of apartheid, the country has been viewed as the model African nation. After all, it was awarded the World Cup for next year. With this, the country is held to a higher standard than say, the Congo.

Having news of the rate of rape says two things: "They need get it cleaned up" and "It shows the extent of this problem".

Actually, that's kind of the point, although I should have been more explicit in the opening post.

Westerners watch anime with fantasy rape and think that Japan is a horrible rape culture.

In fact the West constantly propagandizes its citizens about how they should feel guilty. This is only possible in a highly policed society.

Most of the world is not so highly policed.

I doubt that you do, but I have neither the resources nor the inclination to prove claims concerning your epistemological shortcomings.

However, some of the other posters on the thread, such as the one who raised the female circumcision issue, are clearly well-informed, IMHO.

True, Time reported this on Saturday, Jun. 20, 2009. However, I didn't start thinking about it until I saw ep. 5 of Bakemonogatari and I didn't figure out my thoughts on the matter until I saw ep. 6, so I'm commenting as quickly as I can.

South Africa? Isn't that supposed to be the more of a literate part of Africa? Guess not. I mean if it was upto me, I would have ordered execution of those rapists without trial. More lenient the legal system is, the more crime becomes rampant. Hard punishments normally leads to less crime.

The problem is that such a punishment would make the criminal likely to repeat the crime at the earliest opportunity.

Summary execution of rapists would be more likely to reduce the influence of rape on the culture in question.

Actually, South Africa is one of the more literate parts of Africa. Egypt is pretty good, too.

So, counting Killy and myself would make two votes for summary execution of rapists, and YaYERZ has one vote in favor of raping rapists.

Maybe I should add a poll.

True. That's why the title says "more than one quarter of surveyed South African men," so as to leave the possibility open that the non-surveyed men might have answered differently.

However, the fact is that most of Africa has a rape crisis, and mostly Westerners don't hear about it. South Africa has a combination of Western laws and African problems - thus we hear about South Africa's rape issues.

The problem with assigning the death penalty for rape would rest in the fact that there is no higher punishment for an added offense. In other words if murder is also punishable by the death penalty as well criminals may be prone to thinking: "hell, why not kill the women as well, I'm already going to die anyways...". So this could lead to an increase in the number of rape/murder offenses because logically, if a person is that desperate and fucked up to rape someone in the first place, odds are death isn't something they're really considering as a reason to not commit the crime.
