To absolutely no genre, not likeing a genre is just blinding yourself to something new.
just because you don't like a certain genre doesn't mean you wont watch somehting from those genres. for example, i dont like harem or mecca shows, but i still watch them, and most of the time they only further make me dislike the genre... so i dont know why i keep watching them, but i do anyway. it doesnt matter that i dont like it, i still give shows a try.

though i guess it'd be great to not have any bias towards a genre. then you'd love almost any show you watched!!! (if it was good)

That's fine and dandy, but the fact that you are biased against in the first place is what's not making you like anymore of them, the only way you will like one of any of them is if an OUTSTANDIING one comes out for it, and you may think a little better on that one show, but still not that great, when you're biased against a genre you don't have a place to rate or judge it as you're already against it to begin with.

and something new doesn't have to be good, but you can't hate it just by knowing where it falls.

Biased for: Anything that has people with wings. Fantasy. Oh and also having at least one pretty bishounen helps.

Biased against: Slice of life... some is ok, but most bores me. Sports. Animation styles that I don't like (such as One Piece... I've never watched more than one episode, only because I just don't like the style).

Hmmm, I can't say that there are any genre that I really dislike. I can watch everything as long as it is fun/interesting to watch.
If I shall look at the animes I have seen, I would say that it looks like I like those animes that is based a little on the real life (Slice of Life). That it happends in a a world that looks like the world we are living in (I mean, with cars, tv etc). Hard to explain XD

I have to say that I am definitely biased toward mecha stuff, I absolutely love the genre, but my girlfriend can't stand it. I also tend to be somewhat biased toward fantasy and sci-fi stuff. And samurai/ninja historical stuff.

The only genres I'm really biased against are hentai and pure nonsense comedy. I refuse to watch anything hentai, regardless of what other genre it falls under, but the comedy I can watch occasionally if I just need a laugh.

Other than that, I can really watch just about anything.

I basically have no clue whether anything I watch is shoujo, shonen or whatever else - I've never seen any definition of any of that sort of term that told me anything useful.

As far as I have ever been able to determine, an anime is "shounen" if it is based on a series published in a manga that bills itself as "shounen" (Shounen Jump, Shounen King, Shounen Weekly, etc.). Likewise shoujo, seinen or josei. Some people seem to equate "shounen" with the never ending action series like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Dragon Ball, etc., etc. but there is so much else that is just as shounen (comedy, romance, suspence, mystery, horror) that the label "shounen" is really pretty meaningless.

I like some mecha, but not others; Patlabor-ish 'realistic' mecha good,

Patlabor is one of my own faves (I own the whole TV series, OVAs and all three movies), and although I'm not a special fan of Gundam, I do enjoy some of the other "unrealistic" mecha anime, like Eureka Seven, Overman King Gainer, Vandread, etc.

I really despise the whole concept of mechs and the last mech anime I truly enjoyed was Escaflowne which aired all the way back in 1996.

Mechs are cool for videogames where you can actually drive them, but for anime they are just an old, overused plot device that just needs to go away.

I'm against:

Very long fight scenes that spans a few episodes disses me, cuz I feel those waste a lot of animation effort and time (mine especially). In short, bad shounen.

Long and meaninglessly complex love triangles (or bigger 2D shapes) that wastes episodes. Same reason as above. In short, bad shoujo.

Sports. I like to play sports IRL and watching stuff like Prince of Tennis makes me feel extremely incredulous.

I would have to say that I really don't like watching guy on guy stuff. S-Fest stuff is just not for me. And tragedy dramas are just too depressing. I guess my favorite would have to be the action genre because that's what got me into anime in the first place. It took me a while before I started to lean towards other genres.

I don't quite like anime series that are too romantic, unless there is really something special about them -- they always give you that impression that if you've seen one, you've seen them all, because they use the same ideas over and over.
Also, I don't think I'll watch something that is entirely sports or mecha, it's ok if just a part of the show is like that, but I wouldn't watch a whole show of this type.

I typically am biased against mecha animes although I will occasionally decide to go out on a limb on give on a chance. I actually have The 08th MS Team sitting on my HD whenever I'm ready to give it a viewing. I also do not care for guy-on-guy anime. I would prefer anime that had a constantly moving plotline. I do not watch hentai nor do I watch romantic anime. I typically go for anime that I know I'm going to see some action in while watching but I can also watch an anime with a good and/or deep story. I haven't had my crack at a sports anime yet but I do plan on watching Hajime no Ippo in the future so that opinion may change.

I like comedy the most. Not a fan of yuri/yaoi, or 'serious' romance in general. (comedy romance is fine, obviously) stuff like Lovely Complex is awesome, but Kimi ga Nozumu Eien bored me to tears.

I also like sci-fi a lot, but not much sci-fi anime is terribly good... too much super power mech stuff with near invincible robots.

I'm biased towards Psychological and Thriller animes, seeing as I like stuff that makes me think. Also, the more twisted something is, the better.

I probably biased against Shoujo and Mahou Shoujo. I do not like what I have seen of these genres thus far.

It'd take a lot of convincing to get me to bother with anything that's primarily a harem show. The whole concept just fails to appeal to me.

QFT. Even though I like Negima XD (I have convinced myself it's not a harem anime, even though that's the platform for everything else in the show)

I'd say I'm biased towards space operas, giant robots, and parodies. I'm biased against shojo (though I watch some), sports (which I may watch someday if I'm desperate for viewing material) and hentai (which I don't watch at all, unless you count shows like Elfen Lied or Golden Boy, which actually have redeeming qualities imo)

What I like about the sports anime is the whole process. You start out weak, you then get stronger, and then you realize that you werent that strong, then you train to become even stronger, it repeats itself a couple of times and then you have like an awesome final match. Somewhere in between, there is some internal struggle. Its the same in most sports anime but for some reason i cant get enough of it. This can be applied to fighting shounen anime but they seem to drag it out longer.
I'm a complete sucker for sports animes -- even bad ones... even bad ones I acknowledge to be bad. I just love rooting for an underdog. And I can't think of a better description than the one Faust already gave.

I'm kind of biased against really old animes and certain types of animation -- if I can't stand looking at it, I'll have a lot of trouble watching it for long enough to give it a fair chance. And I'm completely biased against shows with a repetitive transformation sequence or no/not enough likable men. ;)

When I first started watching anime I was mainly into action/romance, but I've really taken a liking to the slice of life genre. I enjoy the comedy and laid back atmosphere of them.

At first I just couldn't stand mecha's but now I could watch some. Just the really popular ones. So if I happen to come across an anime that is not widely advertised that is a mecha then I would choose not to even read about it.

I've become avoidant of overly-philosophical anime (cough, ergo proxy)

if I want some philosophy I'll go read a book.

I always like a good slice of life

I'm biased for shoujo, slice of life, and psychological.

Against endless, mindless battle shows (i.e. DBZ, Bleach), mecha, and aliens/outer space.

I seem to be biased towards comedy, slice of life, yuri, and loli shows, and shonen/action/magic to a certain extent. My favourite shows tend to be lighthearted series that are funny as well as cute or "moe" in nature. The more serious action series (mostly shonen) would be better if they weren't all over 100 episodes. They should keep that stuff condensed instead of ruining it with filler.

I'm against yaoi, first and foremost. A couple of guys kissing and pounding each other's butts is the biggest turn-off ever. I also dislike, guro, scat, rape, futa, tentacles, or pretty much anything else that's considered "alternative" or "extreme" in nature.

Guys (straight guys anyhow) aren't supposed to get yaoi. For once, it's not about turning guys on. Let the girls enjoy themselves 'kay ;)

lol not in the part of Canada where I live

People I know IRL either think of anime as "those Japanese cartoons" or just "cartoons". They can differentiate between anime and hentai, but they usually call it "anime porn" or "cartoon porn". In general, they've stopped seeing all anime as childish, but I don't think the reputation of anime being "that weird foreign thing" will ever go away, even though all anime broadcast on TV in Canada and the U.S. is dubbed (as far as I know).

They are pretty much right about anime being cartoons though, even if it's incorrect to group it with Western animation. The animation quality in American cartoons is usually superior, and most American comic books are drawn better than manga by far. Still, anime art has its own unique style, and I prefer anime.

I don't really talk to anyone IRL about anime anyway, so it makes no difference to me. I've only heard people talk about anime through rumours and whatnot.
