Why do they pronounce Eureka like El-rekka?

The original Greek pronunciation of this word should be something like "Ev-rick-ah" I suppose. Maybe it's actually like that? And it's obviously shouldn't be "yu-re-ka" or anything like that.

it's more like "e-u-re-ka" with the japanese prononciation for each hiragana, which might sound like "é-ou-le-ka".

Cool, thanks for explaining it. I wonder why the english dubbed version went with the japanese pronunciation?

Because it's her name? Dunno.

Speaking of Eureka, do you recommend the sub or dub? The few episodes I've seen on adult swim didn't seem bad.

Personally I'd recommend the sub. I mean as far as dubs go, Eureka isn't a trainwreck or anything. In fact I was introduced to the series with the dub. But I fell in love with it with the Japanese version you see. xD What I mean is, either one goes really, but the Japanese version is better.

As far as her name goes, I'm so happy they kept the normal pronunciation in the dub. I think the way they say her name is beautiful. Yuu-ree-ka, is such an ugly sounding word. Eh-ooh-reh-ka is so much prettier. And it's just her name...it would have been weird and a tad wrong if they had decided to Americanize it.

Changing the pronunciation from one language to another would take some of the charm away I think, even if it's a former english word used as a first name here.

They way it is pronounced comes directly from the Katakana of the work Eureka in Japanese.

エウレカ = Eureka

エ - E (Long ee sound)
ウ - U (sounds like "you")
レ - Re
カ - Ka

But in 4 sylabuls so you get: Ee-you-re-ka.

I also agree with the person stating that it sounds much prettier than Eureka does in English. Especially when Renton is yelling it or something, makes it sound much more like a name than simply saying Eureka.

L-Wreck-Ah Seven, if it was spelled this way there would be less confusion.

It's not really L-wreck, if you listen closely. Its just the 4 katakana that make up eureka in japanese.

it's simple really, I find it funny that this discussion takes place, but it's understandable, given the normal English pronunciation of it

The way it's pronounced in the anime, is the original Greek pronunciation of the word (except that the Japanese pronounce it rather funnily, so it's understandable it could get confusing)

We have no such problem in Spanish, because we pronounce things exactly like they are read, letter by letter (I don't knwo if this makes any sense? XD), so in spanish, the word Eureka is pronounced like in the original Greek also.

I'm watching this anime for the first time and I keep hearing el reka

But funny thing that also makes this anime so much better for me was because my man nicknamed me El Reka which later on became RekaGirl because of this anime but my friends had already nicknamed me Reba so change one letter and I'm Reka

Idk just got pretty hyped just now lol and I just had to search up if my hears were correct

But honestly this anime has so much meaning to me.

Sorry if this was weird

ooo I'm replying to a 11 year post I'm cool now
evrika is the modern greek pronounciation after the aspirated /h/ and long vowels were lost and eu switched to ev in the koine period. The original pronunciation was heurēka.

Everyone here saying it sounds like "el-rekka" or "E-you-re-ka", I don't understand.
It sounds like "eh-oh-deck-uh" and sometimes the first 2 syllables are blended as "ow-deck-uh".
