I'm looking for a good comedy that doesn't rely on things like panty shots and boob grabs to make a joke. Something along the lines of Fumoffu, School Rumble, and Ouran where the comedy is either slapstick or simply characters saying sarcastic, funny things. A pure comedy is more of what I'm interested in, but the door is open to shows that have a dab of drama or romance mixed in as long as the funny is the focus. Also, it doesn't need to be a gut buster if it's still a good, enjoyable show that gets a few chuckles an episode.

Since I don't fill in my plan to watch list, I have a good idea of what people may recommend off the bat and I want to get those out of the way so people don't recommend something I already plan to watch. This is not to discourage seconds and thirds, though, but to say, "I plan on watching this and you can second it, but please give me another show as well."

Detroit Metal City. It's the most extreme comedy you'll find, and relies entirely on slapstick, as well as insane obscenity. It's great.

The risk that comes to my mind with Itazura na Kiss is that you'll find the heroine too annoying. But there's the added bonus, for English-speaking viewers, of sustained conversation in terrible English, which is hilarious.

DMC is good.

You could try Cromartie High School, too.

And Irresponsible Captain Tylor is mostly free of fanservice, and such limited fanservice as it does have is sort of mediated.

And there's the first Patlabor OVA, the Patlabor TV series and the second Patlabor OVA. The Patlabor movies, while interesting, are more serious, slow-moving thrillers.

Oh, and there's Dai-Guard, too: a satire on Japanese corporate culture, with a giant robot in the background. (Though it becomes more of a drama in its later phases.)

Ramen Fighter Miki is a really underrated slapstick comedy. I'd say go with that.
My first novel, Kardia has been published! Click here to read!

I'll second Cromartie High School.

And you may also want to try Seto no Hanayome, it's pure ridiculous comedy. There may be 1 or 2 minor fanservice moments, but the main emphasis is on busting your guts.

I think you should try out "Super Gals". Funny title with no fan service whatsoever.

You can check out the "What made you laugh the most" thread in the Anime section. The most funniest ones are repeated all the time there.

I'll just add Sayonara Zetsubout Sensei here. It is almost pure comedy. There's only a little bit of romance, and it's only there for the jokes.

Hyakko is a school comedy without any fanservice even though it stars four girls.

Special A is funny too.

Gintama and Skip Beat, absolutely. Nodame Cantabile if you want more of a romcom, Tokyo Godfathers for Christmas.

I'll add Yakitate!! Japan. One of the better fanservice-free ones.

Also, since you listed it, I might note that Puni Puni Poemi is basically a massive parody of various fanservice conventions. So for a straight-up comedy, it's as fanservice-oriented as you can get.

Azumanga is great, but if anyoone actually bother to check his list, you would see that he has already seen it.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei does have a bit of fanservice in it, but it is presented in a way that parodies the idea more than anything.

As for a personal reccomendation. Jungle wa Itsumo Hare nochi Guu is relatively fanservice free (although the "deluxe"
OVA has more fanservice in it) and it is one of the funniest comedies I have seen.

Yea, you've guys have recommended several shows (Seto, AZD, Nadesico, Minami-ke) on my list and rated pretty high.

Here's my question about Zetsubou Sensei, is it as dark as I think it is? That's kind of why I've been putting it off, I find it hard to make a funny joke about suicide. I'm just not so sure about this "dark comedy" people love so much.

Super Gals looks like a show I'd want to punch in the face. I get a feeling from all the trailers and pictures I've seen that I would hate those girls with a passion because I hate those "valley girl" types.

DMC is kind of in the same boat as SZS. It just seems really, really creepy.

I've always thought Cromartie High School looked dumb, honestly. I also don't like the no girls part; I've never been a fan sausage fests in anime or real life. I'll probably end up watching it, though, because I have seen a funny trailer, but I'll buy it later next year when I have all the shows I really want.

Maybes: Nodame Cantabile (long), Patlabor (long), Hare Guu (expensive), and Yakitate Japan (long)

Definites: Itazura no Kiss, Captain Tylor, Ramen Fighter Miki, Genshiken, Skip Beat, and Hyakko

These are all good. Anymore?

Zetsubou sensei is indeed a tiny bit dark, but it's intended in a non-serious sort of way. If you can't get over the joking about suicide you'll probably have a hard time with the show. I suspect in that case you might have some issues with a few other themes of the show as well. :P
If you can overcome that, however, it's a fast paced, slightly dark, but all around funny show.
