+1 Toward the Light - I can see it but it's not a very interesting song.

Grand Opening - The Thread of Fate - I don't really see it at all.

Where the Sky and the Earth Meet - I'm afraid not at all.....

+1 Truth - As I hear this, I imagine running up a very, very large staircase frenetically in hopes that what I am searching for will be at the top having just found out it's whereabouts, so in that regard, I see it.

+1 Open your Heart - My nom, from what is still probably my favorite OST, and Kajiura's best IMO, it's like discovering something because you open your heart to it, I think.

Hajimari - The words that come to mind are 'bold new morning' not sure about 'discovery'

+1 Aerodynamic - I could see this as a very dramatic discovery in the instance where the guitar sound cuts through, like a giant object emerging in the distance, and the other slowing-down part, too , is very discovery. I need to hurry and watch interstella 555 and see it in action.....

Omoi Haruka - I don't even slightly see it....

+2 Saigo no Mameshiiba - I had considered nomming regular Mameshiiba and in fact I'm not sure I've heard this version. But I love it! I was almost shocked by the overwhelming emotion and energy that poured out of this song. Great stuff!

Rose Brand ~ Bride in the Sky Garden - Good song, but don't see it.

Random notes: While going through the songs, more than a couple of them reminds me of Star Control 2 and I don't know why. This is also a more diverse group than I expected. Vague themes tend to work well? Even so, most songs fall into either A. premonition before discovery or B. omg <somebody/thing> discovered/changed.

Toward the Light - This song reminds me of the scene in Star Trek:TNG where Picard picks up a top hat and cane and danced. It's fruity like that. IIRC the show used it in a fruity way too?
+1 for discovering another side to yourself?

Thread of Fate - I've been reading Guin Saga, and this song matches that very well. Not sure about "discovering" as much as "unveiling" but it's a very nuanced song with a variety of moods and feelings mixed together. Mostly positive ones... My Uematsu worshipping friend knocks this, but I think it's quite signature of him.

Where the Sky and the Earth Meet - A couple things. There were a couple tracks from Arjuna that I browsed through while picking out the nomination that really resembles this one in terms of mood. Also, great contrast with the previous track. There are a few polar opposite nominations in the past 10 weeks, but this one stuck out to me. That said, I didn't pick those Arjuna tracks because they don't seem to fit the theme that well, but this one approaches the theme differently and is very fitting.
+3 Takefumi Haketa does a bang-up job with Someday's Dreamer I thought, and this is a prime example.

Truth - It's a nice progression. Almost Utena-ish? It's a bit like a Russian doll of a song.

Open your heart - this is a trip like a mild high, or something. I always liked Kajiura the most when she doesn't take it too deep and dark. Perhaps with a dose of melancholy, which this lacks.

Hajimari - Kannagi turned out a lot like this song... I really like the lava-lamp-demoscene feel to it.
+1 for surprisingly better than I remembered

Aerodynamic - very I555. If it's discovering anything, it's nothing new to me w.

Omoi Haruka - It's a heavy theme, so type B. I like the arrangement, it's heavy yet very easy going, and doesn't leave much of a trace afterward. Not sure if that's for the best, but it's rare.

Saigo no Mameshiba - Unlike the normal version which is arranged like a song you listen to while wrapped in warm blankets under a chilly autumn afternoon, this version makes you want to go outside and run...and stop somewhere. And look at the sky and see if you find something different this time around versus all the other times you've looked at the sky. Perhaps it's not as much "discovery" as "transformation?"

Rose Brand ~ Bride in the Sky Garden - This track is also type B, but like, ZOMG WTF is this! OH WAIT SCENE CHANGE.
+1 for a ZOMG discovery track. As in the ZOMG.

RD Sennou Chousashitsu - Toward the Light! (watched 6 episodes): The theme of discovery is there, but I'm just not feeling it.

Guin Saga - Grand Opening - The Thread of Fate (have not seen): Not really discovery, but more like ADVENTURE! I do like the piece though.

Someday's Dreamers - Where the Sky and the Earth Meet (watched all of it): I think for me, I like how everything builds up, and then when the Celtic influence starts kicking in, I'm like YEAH! Then the children come in for the chorus, and I'm not so high on the song anymore. Though it's still one of my favorite songs from one of my favorite OSTs. I think I might have chosen something else from there though. :P +1.

Mahou Sensei Negima - Truth (have not watched): I'd say it's "typical" character finds something he/she wasn't supposed to find/didn't want to find type of piece, but I like how it builds up.

.hack//SIGN - Open Your Heart (watched it all): Not one of my favorite tracks from another one of my favorite OSTs, and the message seems too "easy", or more like one will discover something if they do "open their hearts", so it hasn't been done already.

Kannagi - Hajimari (watched it all): Never heard the full version of the song by itself before, and I like the progression from the starting theme. A short but eventful discovery. Good on Satoru Kousaki there. +1

Interstellar 5555 - Aerodynamic (watched it all): Different stages of discovering something new. And funky. Go go Daft Punk again. +1

Seirei no Moribito - Omoi Haruka (haven't watched it): As I've said before, it's totally a song that sounds like "I've learned something new today", and that's discovery right there. Maybe digitalboy needs to listen to it again. :P +1

Earth Girl Arjuna - Saigo no Mameshiba (haven't watched): Have only heard "Mameshiba" myself, but to me, this sounds like a nice "I've learned something new about myself, and I've discovered that it is pretty good" moment, especially with how it tapers out as a piano and xylophone duet. +1

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse - Rose Brand ~ Bride in the Sky Garden (watched): Oh snap. One of my favorite songs from the Utena movie (or really, any Utena soundtrack for that matter). Like omo said, there's some scene changes here, but I think of each as a new discovery. +1

I just found the song extremely boring and discovery should never be boring. This was really the case for all the ones I didn't give points to.

.hack//SIGN - Open Your Heart - I really enjoy this track with its amazing melody and good lyrics, yet it is quite repetitive. +1

Earth Girl Arjuna - Saigo no Mameshiba - I CAN FLY +1

Guin Saga - Grand Opening - The Thread of Fate - This feels like an introduction to an epic, something like Journey to the West, rather than the discovery of something new.

Kannagi - Hajimari - Ah, I've rediscovered something. This song is true joy at discovering something long lost or forgotten. Then the nostalgia hits and you're on this wave of euphoria that never quite fades. +1

Mahou Sensei Negima - Truth - Don't feel the discovery of this one.

RD Sennou Chousashitsu - Toward the Light! - I like the occasionally slow down (what was that musical term again -retando?) before the entire orchestra reenters with a bang. +1

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse - Rose Brand ~ Bride in the Sky Garden - This song has an excellent buidup and then leads to nothing before picking itself back up again.

Seirei no Moribito - Omoi Haruka - This is a traveling song to me, but with traveling comes the sense of discovery of something new, something one has never seen before. +2

Someday's Dreamers - Where the Sky and the Earth Meet - I'm not sure what I feel about this one. Its sort of all over the place, but I don't get a sense of discovery with song. Its an good track, but not quite fitting with the theme.

Aerodynamic - My favorite Daft Punk song ever, but I don't think it fits a discovery theme. The song is fit to an abduction sequence so yeah... I would've preferred Voyage for this theme.

Wow, that was a hard one.

+1 to Saigo no Mameshiba, for its pace & energy (and Maaya Sakamoto)
+1 to Aerodynamic, for the electronica aspect bringing to mind space travel
+1 to Hajimari, for the base rhythm, clapping & strings that come in the middle, all of which help drive the song along
+1 to Rose Brand, for the ethereal voices combining with the piano, strings and bongos to create an certain atmosphere (which I can't pin down a descriptive word for at the moment)
+1 to Omoi Haruka, for its traditional style and sense of being
+1 to Where the Sky and the Earth Meet, for its inclusion of merchant instruments and a chorus alongside the base piano to provoke a mental image of a country town or something in the Victorian era? (reminded me of Emma a little but that might be a reach on my part)

As for the rest:
open your heart - I've heard it a bunch before and nothing in it seems to pop out to me
Grand Opening - it's good but too bombastic for me (I guess that reflects my feeling about Uematsu in general)
Truth - quick chimes with strings laid over them build tension/mystery but those toyroom are also what stopped me from giving it points
Toward the Light! - the beginning reminds me of a ballroom slow dance, operatic vocal contributed to the sense of grandness

BTW, this is my first vote since becoming aware again of this club a few days ago. (I'll try to make my way through the previous weeks' threads and listen to those as well.)

Someday's Dreamers - Where the Sky and the Earth Meet - It's been years since I saw Someday's Dreamers. This is a surprising song, since it starts out as something sweet and light, yet evolves into something more engaging. +1

.hack//SIGN - Open Your Heart - It's very Bee Train, isn't it. But I like that melodic percussion noise (whatever it is... kinda like a synthesized xylophone). +1

Interstellar 5555 - Aerodynamic - This isn't Daft Punk's best song (I'd have nominated "One More Time" or "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" myself), but, as if I'm not going to give votes to Daft Punk. +1

Earth Girl Arjuna - Saigo no Mameshiba - When is Kanno ever going to stop making music that wins? Her partnerships with Sakamoto seem to yield some of her best songs as well. This one is awesome (and it's a great anime for anyone who hasn't seen it and doesn't mind a bit of pro-environmental preachiness). +3

I think you mean 'it's very Yuki Kajiura'. Bee train does NOT produce music, they just happen to have Yuki Kajiura do the music for most of their anime. If you listen to her other work on non-Bee Train shows, it sounds the same, so it's in no way accurate to call it 'Bee Train sounding'. Bee Train does not produce anything worthwhile, be it animation or anything else, the music is only good in their shows because they hire a good composer, but she does not belong to them.

I dispute that. It's similar, but not exactly the same. For lack of a better way to put it, I'd say the music she does for Bee Train has a slightly more meandering sound about it, which fit the Bee Train anime better, while her other stuff sounds clearer, stronger and more epic. It's subtle, but even though most of her stuff sounds similar, she does try to make music that fits the mood of whatever she's working on.

I have no idea what the hell you are talking about. Her most meandering soundtrack is Kara no Kyoukai which is not Bee Train and the Petit Cossette OST and Pandora Hearts OST both sound pretty much exactly like the crap she does in .hack.

Mostly extended things for my own benefit since I was moving from one place to the next, so here goes my thoughts for what I consider to be a pretty mad-hard week:

RD Sennou Chousashitsu - Toward the Light!
Simply gorgeous opening and I can't help but feel as though I'm swept along on some grand adventure in search of brighter horizons. The middle part does an excellent job of building itself up nicely to the choral part which signals the awe-inspiring beauty of new sights and sounds that take your breath away. Hopefully people found it enjoyable.

Guin Saga - Grand Opening - The Thread of Fate
There's a sense of wandering around here and this goes well with the show's focus on obtaining that sense of identity and belonging. So I guess that this would go with the idea of a personal discovery. For a bit anyhow, before the piece shifts into full-blown epic journey mode. And yeah, this is Uematsu in one of his better moments. But not quite as good as the pieces that I'm giving points to this week.

Someday's Dreamers - Where the Sky and the Earth Meet
Can someone tell me why I haven't heard of Takefumi until now? Because if his works are like this, I'm missing out on an excellent composer. The piece is really light-hearted and the music puts me in a pretty happy mood as it puts into my mind an image of a child exploring the rolling hills around the countryside. The idea of the countryside is further reinforced through that Celtic section. And of course, the children's chorus basically hits the spot oh so right and renders me incapable of doing much else beyond giving this the points it most certainly deserves.
+2

Mahou Sensei Negima - Truth
The repetitiveness of it isn't necessarily a bad thing in this instance since it brings to mind an image of someone searching for something really precious. Thankfully, it's short enough so that it doesn't overstay its welcome.

.hack//SIGN - Open Your Heart
The introduction is pretty engaging and I can definitely feel Bindiger's voice trying to draw me as she encourages me to errrr... open my heart and let my emotions flow rather than stifling them outright. But the pull is fairly easy to resist since I'm not quite as fond of the trippy atmosphere this puts me into (and yet, I don't mind it when Hirasawa does it). Still, I think this has a chance of growing on me given time.

Kannagi - Hajimari
Well, this piece's rhythm grabs you right off the bat and the only danger is that it might be a bit repetitive, but it tosses in enough variety in the instruments so as to not be boring.

Interstellar 5555 - Aerodynamic
The bell tolling does bring about an air of foreboding before it makes way to a funky rhythm that I can totally dig. Still, it's probably not enough to hit the top of the list of favorites this go-around, but it's a track I'll definitely go back to since it is most certainly enjoyable!

Seirei no Moribito - Omoi Haruka
I do get the vibes of the journey from this piece, both in the sense of a physical and emotional journey, which effectively describes the series rather well. Can't help but feel the goosebumps pop up for this one.
+1

Earth Girl Arjuna - Saigo no Mameshiba
Eeeeyeah, I'd write something about how this managed to overwhelm my senses with its awesomeness, but I think the music speaks well for itself. That piano part at the very end makes for a nice and poignant conclusion.
+2

Revolutionary Girl Utena: Adolescence Apocalypse - Rose Brand ~ Bride in the Sky Garden
Ethereal opening? Maybe a village filled with mist or something before the main melody comes in. There's a feeling of a journey continuing on along with a sense of trepidation, but it settles down to a nice, stately ending.

+2 Where the Sky and the Earth Meet - reminds me a bit of a Joe Hisaishi piece from Spirited Away.
+2 Toward the Light - Sounds like the dawn of a new day
+2 Open your heart- discovery of something not quite tangible. I'm not sure anyone does Ethereal quite like Kajiura.

It's like people saying her Kara no Kyoukai score is just her Tsubasa Chronicle or .hack scores, though you can tell the difference. It's the same thing.

Hmm, well most of her work do differ, but I think Petit Cossette is one that doesn't have much distinctive character to it, compared to even AquaAge or some of the .hack stuff. So it blurs a lot.

It is not like saying Rakkyo soundtrack is like Tsubasa's. Or .hack.

As an aside, it also depends on the particular piece, what it is used for, and what context. I think Kalafina's sounds, for example, is pretty unique and Rakkyo's BGM builds around the same motif. It's probably her most outstanding work since Mai Hime IMO :3
