Switchfoot, Switchfoot, Switchfoot!!

I love Switchfoot - seen them in concert several times and have met the entire band (except for the newest member), took pictures, got autographs and signed memorabilia, and even talked my way into going backstage to speak with Jon Foreman!

But aside from how cool the guys are, I looooove their music. Their two albums following "The Beautiful Letdown" weren't nearly as awesome as their earlier work, but if you've bought "Hello Hurricane," I hope you'll agree with me that that CD contains some of their best music to date. In fact...it may be my favorite of all their CDs, and that would maybe make it my favorite CD ever...very close.

By the way, since I assume all you Christian music lovers out there are...well...Christian, I'll self-promote. My blog (see my signature line) is about the connection between anime and Christian spirituality. Check it out if interested, and if you know of a seeker who is also an anime fan, maybe you could refer them there. :)

Sooo, what's the message of the song," The Beautiful Letdown"?

Well, the song's about one who has tried to find happiness in the pursuit of the world. Having "crashed and burned" the singer realizes that trying to make money and live the easy life isn't his purpose (a common theme in Foreman's songs). Instead, he's decided to live with an eternal perspective in mind.

We should get some Insane Clown Posse up here. They have claimed they evangelical Christians and it's reflected in their music (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2010/oct/09/insane-clown-posse-christians-god).

I'll let you all decide. LOL
(btw, I'm just kidding....)

Anyways, I just back from a coffeehouse concert by ABIA, a local Christian band. They just released their first album. The lead vocal and guitar is also a member of our worship band at the church I attend. He's very good.

Has anyone listened to Matt Brower? He's an excellent singer - I got a chance to hear him live and meet him at a Borders bookstore he performed at. He was a really nice guy, and lately he's been getting some play on K-Love. He does an awesome cover of Sheryl Crowe's "I Shall Believe" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CYht-Fpvu4g).

Sure they do! "You Are My Hope" is an awesome song by them that contains these lyrics:

Far beyond what I can see or comprehend
Etching your eternity in me
Nations stream and angels sing, "Jesus reigns"
And every knee bows down
You're the hope of all the Earth

Sound pretty explicitly Christian to me!

Agreed, and to extend beyond this, I'm not going to let the CCM industry or bubble subculture determine what 'Christian' music is, because they don't have a monopoly on the concept.

Just because a band doesn't hit a certain JPM (Jesus per minute) quota, doesn't mean they somehow cease to be a Christian act or their music is somehow not Christian, or that there's even an arbitrary quantitative standard that makes music X Christian and music Y secular.

I could even say qualitative standard, since the CCM industry's standards are so low that what they approve of is very often little more than mainstream genre-chasing sputum and the spiritual equivalent of skim soy milk. Meanwhile, those that do take the time to make spiritually, intellectually, and musically deep material are often put down as 'less Christian' than the industry's manufactured junk, or deemed too controversial and censored by Christian bookstores. There's very few mainstream CCM artists I could point to that have gotten wide appeal in the industry/subculture and make deep music. Really, the only one that comes to mind right now is Jars of Clay.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_albums_censored_by_Christian_bookstores

Steve Taylor's own material is a prime example of this type of censorship - many Christian bookstores refused to stock his catalog because the content hit a little too close to home and some of the advocacy groups, televangelists, and organizations found it offensive (which means it gets a huge stamp of approval from me; those sorts of groups don't represent me or my faith, and spiritually do more harm than good - getting rebuked for their un-Christian-like practices and attitudes is the responsible, and Scriptural, thing to do).

Most probably know him better as the producer for several other CCM artists during the 90s like the Newsboys and Sixpence None The Richer, the content of which - while still of substance - was not as edgy or outspoken as his own (I mean, none of those acts he produced did anything on a level liking drawing an explicit parallel between Bob Jones University and South Africa under Apartheid*, and that's only one example).

*go look up the lyrics for "We Don't Need No Color Code" if you don't believe me.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much everything you said. The CCM industry produces...well...a lot of horrid music. -_-'

I would probably toss Switchfoot into that list of CCM artists who have wide appeal and made deep music, since they're now getting heavier play on CCM stations. Not an album of theirs has gone by without an attack on the consumerist culture that plagues American Christians as much as anyone (starts to sing "Company Car").

And thanks for the link - I didn't know Wikipedia had such a list. I wasn't surprised to see POD and Evanescence on it, though some did surprise me. I've seen 12 Stones albums at Family Christian, for instance, and so was surprised to see on of theirs' included.

My two favorite Christian artists! Seriously they're amazing, I know Christian music can seem really stagnant at times but these groups prove that Christian music can be awesome! Seriously, guys check these artists out you won't regret it!

How about one anime related? Nearer My God To Thee sung in Japanese, how awesome is that? I wanted to find the Night on the Galactic Railroad version, but this one is good too (from A Dog of Flanders, I believe). Sad but beautiful.

Skillet & TFK.
Also really love finding videos of K-pop idols singing Christian songs. xD Super Junior has done this a bit..Would be cool if a kpop group released a Christian album. Honestly kinda shocked it hasn't happened yet, or atleast i don't think it has.
