No, smoking cigs is bad and lung cancer has killed several of my favorite VAs. Weed won't fly in Japan

Smoking helps you release tension. There are other ways, yes, but smoking is one.

Yes smoking makes you cool :)) though I wouldn't try it myself. I wish I could see Gray Fullbuster use some Cigs.

Not necessarily, but it does leave a bit of an impression on the viewer as a trait to remember the character by.

Not rly. It only add a uniqueness to the character that makes him memorable Other than that nothing special though Sanji's lolipop was much more memorable than anything.

I think it can boost the 'coolness' of the character. It's not like cigarettes always makes characters cooler. It all depends on their personality.

It just makes me think they smell bad and are putting themselves and everyone around them at risk. Definitely not "cool" in my eyes.

I'm trying to think of a case in anime where the character that was smoking is like... Not the 'cool' character.

Not good, or evil mind you, but just not cool.

I'm wondering if animators/producers have a bias towards having characters that smoke be level headed.

Thoughts?

Tatsuhiro Satou from Welcome to the NHK is a smoker and is never portrayed as a "cool" person.

I'll have to check that out! Thanks. Still, I think there is a certain bias. =)

Not really, and I don't find the appeal of smoking either. Some people try to add smoking to their characters to make them edgy, but to me they look stressed and over worked.

yeah, it does make it more cool, though shikamaru failed on that one, at the moment. it's based on the chara itself i guess

Is it really the smoking itself that makes the character look cool for a lot of people? I mean I don’t think that a lot of people think that smokers, who stand outside in horrible weather because they need their cigarette, look like some cool badasses.

Now take for example a character who lights up a smoke before the start of a fight or who lights up a smoke while shit is going doing. Do people think that the smoking is cool? Or do people think that it’s cool that the character stays relaxed? Instead of fleeing or taking action immediately he casually starts doing something else and takes his time. He acts like what’s happening really isn’t that big of a deal and that he will be able fix it in a few seconds if he wants to. Isn’t that what people actually consider to be cool? Strong and confident characters? I can’t really come up with good examples at the moment, but I would think that you can achieve the same thing without cigarettes. Like Kakashi reading that book during the bell test in, but it can also just be eating or drinking something.

Also the dangers of smoking are pretty well known nowadays. So they kinda draw attention to the “screw it all” attitude some characters have. And isn’t rare that the “screw it,I’m going to do what I want” types of characters (or rebels) are considered to be cool, whether they smoke or not.

In the end I think it’s simply that cool/badass cool people look cool/badass with a lot of things they do. I can’t recall seeing uncool people become cool all of a sudden just because they had put a cigarette in their mouth.

Kind of, it adds a bit of an edge to characters.

Oh in Touko's case, it also increases sexiness.

No. In my eyes, it just makes a character seem older by age. Not necessarily cooler or more mature.

No, that just marks a character as one who gives in to peer pressure to smoke, and doesn't have the willpower to stop it.
I hate smokers, damn drug addicts, why the hell is the law so lax with them?

I put "Doesn't Matter" because I don't care, I think Smoking is gross and I don't get why some people even today will start smoking but it doesn't make me enjoy the anime any less if the character is smoking.

If it's set in the past like before the 1960's or whenever, before people knew that smoking was bad it doesn't stand out as much as it was a normal thing back then.

Smoking helps you release tension. There are other ways, yes, but smoking is one.
That's a pretty weak reason imo. Why not watch a movie or play a video game. Why not listen to some music or pick up a sport.

There are many ways to help release tension that don't involve ruining your health if people take the time to find something that works for them.

It is still done for that reason, regardless of how weak it is. There are better alternatives but some people go for that for whatever reason they decide to have. That would help you understand why smoking, at least cigarettes, can tell you about the characters. It helps them release tension. Lighting a cigarette is also easier and shorter than watching a movie, playing a game(which is also an addicition) and doing a sport. They can also smoke while listening to music too. I'm not trying to convince you that smoking is anything but good, but rather trying to make you understand than despite all the good stuff, smoking is still an alternative available for those who want to do it.

To put an example in Anime, you have Reki from Haibane Renmei. Even people on his world tell her it's bad, yet she does it because she is coping, and no matter how she tries to distract herself with her job, she feels she needs that cig every so on and then.

Another thing you should consider is smoking tobbaco directly, which is less hurtful compared to cigarettes. There you have the characters smoking on a pipe and all that stuff, while still beign relaxing.

So basically people deliberately make bad decisions because they don't care. They don't respect their own well-being. Maybe they are depressed or maybe it's something else. Whatever it is, they've made the decision to partially give up on their livelihood. That's what I'm getting.

Well I don't think smoking makes characters "cooler".
But most of the times smoking intends to make the character look more "experienced" with something whatever the subject is..
Or in some cases they want to also point out his age ( older than ... )
( at least in my book )

Also, remember that the character with the biggest swag of any anime, Sakamoto-kun (Onii-sama doesn't counts because he is not a character, but God), doesn't smoke at all (he even make one of his classmate stop smoking and create bubbles instead).

So, remember, if you want to be as cool as Sakamoto, don't smoke, kids.

In real life it's the least cool thing you could do, but in anime yeah, sure. It definitely does make character look more adult and mature, especially when it's a bish :>

I can't imagine anime character vaping, even though that's a lot more healthy, that's for sure...
