Yet another tense episode, kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Really want to know what happens next!!

Anyways, I wonder what purpose all the guys that fell off the beams in the first game that came into the room will have in the next few episodes.

Just a wild guess, but if things get tight for Kaiji maybe Tonegawa and co will give him an offer to bet their lives instead of those few millimeters that will kill his left ear.
One never knows, but I actually think it's going to be something along those lines...

Yea thats what I was thinking, probably tell the guys in the back that if they offer their lives as a bet they can get paid if Kaiji wins. Would setup another 'insulting the poor/greedy/desperate' rant from Tonegawa at least and make for some interesting begging from the guys in the back for Kaiji to pick them.

Yea, that certainly sounds possible. Even Kaiji might consider it as he saves them if he wins. But still, betting other people's lives is not something Kaiji would do...

That would be fun, "I bet their ears and if I win you give me 20 million."

The thought of a drill piercing my ear is still giving me shivers. But I'm a bit disappointed in Kaiji, he shouldn't have let his guard down.

Good episode. It is getting really intense now. Although, I am getting annoyed at some of Kaiji's reactions. Like when he threw a fit ater he got "tricked" at the beginning.

And Tonegawa finally shows his Akagi blood. Kaiji's going to get hammered, because nobody beats Akagi blood.

It would have been a great sound design choice to have that high pitch winding cranked up on only the left channel.

Nice episode. Loved the intensity of it.
Seems to me Kaiji will try to fake emotions next episode, to try to throw Tonegawa off. Also interesting to see what part those "beam-rejects" will play.

The beginning of this ep let me down a bit. Maybe it was Kaiji half-believing that Tonegawa was capable of reading his mind... Otherwise, I loved it. Like a bunch have said, I am guessing that they will let Kaiji gamble those other people's lives or body parts or some such thing. And he will probably prevail, as he did in the first arc, but blow his winnings on helping the rest of them....

I really really need to watch akagi...

Now that E-card had it second episode as i rewatched it because i had an hunch (or how its written) i can say that Kaiji is in an enourmous Disavantage.

To start with (it already bugged me on episode 16) the Drill on the ear is not so innocent and lets say benevolent as it seems. Its more than obvious that everyone would go for a ear than for an eye but it has 2 setbacks.

1st one is that the drill on the ear causes an unstandable and mindkilling noise like we all saw on this episode
2nd one is that Kaiji loses an oportunity to have lets say 1/4 of his face hidden and loses a chance to be able to cloak some emotions, for example keeping an eye calm and go in despair on the other one. One of the easiest ways of knowing some emotions is looking the person in the eyes. If you can only see one of them i would say its harder to see the emotions.

Besides that Kaiji has allways something to lose, in this case his eardrum. In the other hand Tonegawa has nothing to lose. Well almost. Tonegawa has still his pride to keep but i think until the mid-game Kaiji will be alot more pressured by the Drill than Tonegawa from losing some games. It would be a lot funnier if this turned out to be like the Last game from Akagi when both were betting thier lifes on it (literally)

Technically, only Akagi was actually betting his life. Washizu was betting his hugeass fortune, which was basically, but not entirely, his existence.

Interesting point about the ear, though. Never thought about the second one.

I still think one of the best scenes in Akagi is when Washizu gets headbumped after two and a half episodes of build up.

Hehe. In the manga Washizu DOES start betting his life though, when Akagi whittles away his fortune..

Please don't tell me, I plan to read the Akagi manga when it's finished scanlating past the anime. I can guess what happens, though.

I'm amazed how much this show continues to impress me and every episode gets more and more tense. I was not thinking of the sound the drill would make either but when it happened it hit me like a ton of bricks. That has to be a truly hellish sound.

I'm off to watch episode 18!!

Damn that old geezer is beginning to get on my nerves with his creepy smile... and of course you'd lose that match Kaiji, in such shows when the hero explains his strategy and why his victory is certain before the outcome is clear then he'll lose 99% of the times.

I'm disappointed in Kaiji. To as much as half-believe he could read his mind. This episode wasn't interesting at all, I could guess every move and Kaiji is realizing the basic now, a bit too late.

This guy is making Kaiji dance at the palm of his hand. He is so much more experienced at such gambles while Kaiji is completely lost in his mind-trap.

A good and very tense episode. The music was well-chosen for that one, too.

Tonegawa is such a smooth-talker. He totally fooled Kaiji, slowly throwing him into madness. Kaiji will end up regretting it...

Kaiji is still too prone to naivety. I can understand him though, anyone would be blinded by such an amount of money. But the risk here is too big to be naive. He must either find a way to not listen at all to Tonegawa, or find a way to outwit him.

Wow, is it really hard to reach the conclusion that Tonegawa is just experienced and has gambled with thousands of opponents? Instead this idiot wonders if he's an esper or some shit.

So far into the anime, this is the best gamble.
To win, Kaiji has to do the OPPOSITE, of what Tokugawa expects him to do.

To be fair, it is stated in one of the earlier episodes that Kaiji doesn't like socializing, so I don't find the idea of him thinking it's impossible to be that good at reading people to be that strange.

Kaiji kept thinking that Tonegawa is an esper lmao pls. It's a psychological battle and he's been underestimating everything so far. I hope he finds motivation from the ones who started to watch him.

As if the drill is not enough, the sounds during the process had to be agonizing orz You can do it!
