This Kummen arc, Kanjelman and his ideals, the way he brought it forward reminded me a lot about the movie "The Last Samurai". It has the same plot elements; modernization, old vs new, civil war/rebellion, etc. Maybe it's just me or the portrayal but Katsumoto died gloriously in the movie there, Kanjelman's death here was lame. I don't really care about Kanjelman. His character doesn't even seem to fit in the story.

Haven't seen "The Last Samurai", but for what it's worth, I rather liked Kanjelman. He always seemed to have this aura of dignity and tragedy about him, which made for a nice contrast to other villains seen in the show so far, like Kan Yu or Borough.

If he created a civil war, so that he could die and take all the old things with him, so that his country could modernize, some would call him a patriot. Others, a terrorist.

But isn't there a possibility that his death would make him a martyr, something that would inspire surviving rebels to fight on.

Well, Potaria completed his mission, although part of him still held some respect for Kanjelman in a way.

Imagine having respect for a suicidal-genocidal maniac. I expect more from Potaria. That was hella stupid of him.

I get what they were going for with Kanjelman but I didn't quite sympathize with him. Haven't seen The Last Samurai but that's a good point, I can definitely see how the storyline might have been inspired by Japan's own history during the Meiji Restoration.
