THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

Don't really understand Neil these last few episodes, his whole character has changed. In regards to Elmelie he's gone from crying in anguish at her attempt to help them to punching her in the face for her attempt to help them. The impact of this moment is just one of confusion also because no other crew member has been met with the same action when making mistakes.

We don't know what happened to Neil when he met King Folsen (don't know how to spell that) so I guess that might be a reason. The rest of the crew are clearly slowly becoming at odds with Neil also so hopefully this comes to something interesting soon. I mean who punches their lover in the face ffs!

I hope Elmelie is kinky

Interesting bit of dialogue in which the recent Japanese history of militarism is indirectly discussed; Show's declaration that he can talk about world peace (meaning of course peace through arms, as he's fighting to achieve something) seems to me to be probably reflective of the growing international scrutiny of postwar Japan while Japanese are re-emerging as an important nation in global discourses. To me, it seems like an endorsement of the normalization of the Japanese state as a state that is involved in global security matters.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels Neil seems to be acting really out of character compared to his earlier portrayals without a clear reason.

I kind of feel for Elmelie in general. Girl risks life and limb to join up with them, then is given the cold shoulder by just about everyone - which is in itself kinda weird, considering how happy they were when she finally managed to join up with them in the first place. She got a big moment reuniting with Neil and everything.

I still like Aura Battler Dunbine in general, but there have been so many times these past fifteen episodes or so where I felt everything that went down was better in concept than in execution. I'm not the world's biggest expert when it comes to Tomino's work (have only seen MSG, Zeta Gundam and Brave Raideen so far), but there are definitely patterns in his work that I'm beginning to recognize that leave me rolling my eyes at times.

But hey, while I don't think Show is the most interesting MC in anime history (or even the most interesting character in Dunbine) at least it's nice to have a protagonist who isn't a moody emo boy for once. xD

It's vintage Tomino tbh. I've seen alot of his work now and he is just a bad director. As you mention better in concept than in execution. His vision for shows is great, genuinely amazing, but his writing and just general episode to episode pacing and story telling is woeful. I keep subjecting myself to it because I like this era of Mecha shows but it is frustrating that Sunrise put him at the helm of so much of their output because I've had issues with all of them.

Neal's actions make a lot of sense to me with his character arc. To this point he's been gradually forcing himself to act as more of a strict and detached leader because and that he doesn't want to repeat his earlier mistake of being a commanding officer who puts his own feelings ahead of his duty makes sense too with how ashamed of it he was. As is the case with these last stretch of episodes Tomino is often very heavy-handed with his characters and his scenes often lack subtlety as if he doesn't respect the audience to read between the lines a little but I find that he always does a good job at basing his characters' decisions on their values and own ways of thinking and gives them the ability to act on faulty logic like real people do. His dialogue on the other hand is kind of shit and he has a habit of putting things in with little to no build up like in this episode with Fey revealing he's a Chinese to allude to the war crimes the Japanese committed in Nanjing. It makes a lot of his shows feel sloppy.

with all that said he really chose to show a guy decking his girlfriend lmao

What you say makes sense @Jimgus, Howewer hes punishment was so far away from normal punishment. Maybe because he loves or he loved her, i thinks he has to go harder in order to not fall again within his emotions
