So far i dont see the hype. It was barely alright. saved by the animation and characters but honestly the spiral shiot was kinda dumb. ill keep watchin see what all the fuss is about but i dont have any hope yet. I think a lot of people are "liking" it because its some kind of cult classic and they cant be honest. People liking it cause its edgy but really its not.
@Oldman_otaku nice shoot! lol

This is so contrived that it's not enjoyable. It's weird that it feels like a 1 to 1 adaptation yet it doesn't hit the same as the manga. Maybe it's just bc it doesn't translate very well from one medium to another. Maybe we just didn't need an adaptation at all, but hey, we got the cool Azami moment, right?

They literally cut off every pretext, eeriness and mystery build-up each stories has squizz 4 stories into 22 minutes......All I saw was cut to jumpscares, but those jumpscare panels were fear inducing and iconic bcz of the pretext and build up in the first place, writter seemed to missed the part

Example (Spoiler Alart)---- Azami's story was completely ruined, No foreshadowing about her forehead, no letting the audience see how she views boys, no letting meeting in Sunichi's home at night.... Literally there was to pretext, just few glimpse and jump to the final scene of her story...

Same for Sunichi's families story, which was one the most important chapter of the manga relating to Sunichi's character development...
@TaifSux you hit the nail in the head. Exactly my feelings

been plotting since day one ptw like in 2022 read a bit of the manga basically just the entirety of eps one and the cgi actually was suited and gave a bit more life to their movements. Imagine if this had an op and a ending 😆😆😆.

Ahh yes... Junji Ito, the man needs no introduction to me for I've known of his works for a long time, albeit I have never actually watched any anime adaptation of his works...
Until now.

Right off the bat, we got a combination of monotone color and CGI as the visual that we'll see from henceforth, It's as though the manga panels itself is coming to life and the quirkiness that you'd usually find revolting actually plays into the overall creepiness of the episode in a whole. ESPECIALLY when the uzumakis (Not Naruto Uzumaki~obligatory jokes) started to appear in people's body and distort their own limbs, this is particularly visible during moments when Shuuichi's father's insanity and obsessiveness over the Uzumaki are shown, especially when he's moving his eyeballs, yoo that was freaky.

Nevertheless, I felt that everything happens really quickly, was the pacing really this quick? Seeing the number of episodes that will adapt this adaptation totalling only 4 normal length episodes made me realize that perhaps it's not a long story to begin with. I love the creepiness of the entire episode, the OST and sound effects really played into that atmosphere for the good, though nothing is explicitly 'scary' I still appreciate that the vibe is consistent throughout. The story itself is engaging enough, this suspense and the implication that the town has been cursed with an unknown phenomenon had me hooked to know more about...

I am used to horror stories taking a slow time to start and build up to its horror. But this just was 100 mph right off the bat. And this shit was genuinely disturbing. The worst part is that knew of three images from Uzumaki... all of them were in this episode, so I dread what comes next.

At first when I saw that this was CGI I was slightly disappointed, that was until I saw how well it imitated the feel of a manga page, and how the slight uncanny vally of some of the movements just helped me to be uncomfortable and shocked by the horrendous imagery.

So as an anime only watcher, let me have this one bit of speculation. "The Spiral" is some lovecraftian being trying to turn (heh) the world into its image.

I feel like this first episode is a great demonstration that even the best animation in the world can't save god-awful pacing. Like, what were they thinking? This episode felt more like a demo reel for an animation studio than an TV episode trying to tell a story. for me this is like a 4/10 or 5/10

I think it also proves that people will heap endless praise onto any subpar show so long as it has high-quality animation and hate on anything with more limited animation. In my eyes, Junji Itou: Maniac is way better. At least Maniac preserves the excellent pacing of the stories it adapts.

It's sooooo good! even though it's a little sped up, I think it definitely made justice to the manga. The animation, even though some may find it weird... I think it rocks, and I won't even mention the background music. Really adds up to the ambience.

Finally, after five year of waiting through various delays. Junji Itou's Uzumaki has finally been adapted into an anime and so far its just as scary as is advertised. It seems like an episodic anime that ties into the main plot of the small town loosing itself to the spirals starting with Sunichi's father being obsessed with spirals and ended up dying to become one. Production I.G. as one of the producers made sure the studios took their time to adapt Junji's work properly and it looked like it paid off this time.

Absolutely top notch adaptation of the manga. Nails the atmosphere and art style completely

Absolutely gorgeous. Been waiting for this to be released for like 3 years and it was definitely worth the wait. The story is rather fast pace but man does it look beautiful. The black and white animation with all it’s details and lines looks so beautiful and true to the manga unlike all the other Junji Ito adaptations. It’s sadly not as scary to me but that’s entirely cus I know the source material very well. I do feel some jump scares and scary moments could’ve build up a bit better similar to the page-turners but the art still makes up for it. Gorgeous.

Watching a bit late now. It really had my attention with this kind of animation it kind of feels hypnotic to see. Character movements look strange where they get that uncanny higher frame rate at times but it works.

i am new, idk what to expect but i will see. the story is trusted and recommended by so many so i will just wait. however the animation was too cgi for me. i love the black and white theme but it feels like manga frames were slapped together by ai. i wonder if reading the manga would be better. anyways i like spirals as a shape and i cant wait for them to get popular<3

OMG! Ouch!

Growing up, I had a friend who had intrusive thoughts doing this shit.

Also...

The girl with a scar on her forehead who had a passive charm to draw in guys should've had her story fleshed out more than just pace through it. At least have her arc end in 2 or 3 episodes. She's introduced as calm and indifferent to the guy's attention, then by the end of the episode She's a raving lunatic.

The movement of the characters seems weird at first but I believe it is intended to be so. They seem spirited in a bubble. As if time goes slower and so do their movements. That adds to the feeling of unease that the series and the manga alike manage to instill.
I also think that Kirie's character has the best facial expression I have ever seen in an anime so far. Truly mesmerizing.

kinda odd they speedran through some story
@RawrOfTheEmo I believe that is inevitable when you adapt a manga or a book because that medium of expression can run for much longer and say things with less technical constrains.

I laughed a lot, nice comedy horror.
Never understood why people like junji ito but this anime feels funnier than some actual comedies like shikanokotan
@kataneer What exactly made you laugh? ahah that is funny you say so because lot's of people felt a lot of anxiety from it and not comedic twists.

Well, this was quite an acid trip for only 1 episode.

The horror in this was spectacular imho with Azami's whole spiral situation being really gruesome and also the dub was pretty good I say.

Looking forward to the next ones!
