@Mackyreels Why am I seeing you crying about the animation everywhere? The animation looks amazing just see the manga and anime difference and how Madhouse adapted it and made it so much better than the manga itself in this anime. I'm seeing you on YouTube, Mal and idk I feel like I've seen your name in X aswell why do you keep crying about the animation?
@AyaazMahim You can find me on Facebook too Just kidding LMAO. Nothing serious i just always talks about it in my comments lul cause i ain't satisfied. I like this show alot 8/10 im not a hater 😂

1. Heliocentrisim v.s. Geocentrisim.
Why is this even such a concern that it is being considered heresy to adhere and/or research? This is like the argument of Flat Earth v.s. Round Earth where the Bible uses language as if it were speaking of a flat Earth because it was the world view of the writers which some may take literally but personally I take as symbolic language (like the phrase "four corners of the Earth" referring to geographic completion). There is also the argument of Young Earth v.s. Old Earth where the numbers are seen as either literal or symbolic.

Either way, to me all of this is of lesser concern as it does not have anything to do with ones Salvation.

It's just about church political power and greed. If the church isnt the source of facts of the world it calls into question their power. If they admit to being wrong even if they try to steal credit it would also ruin their reputation. So it is in the churches best interest as they think to suppress any differing opinions whether they are incorrect or correct. This is why so much violence was enacted, well that and fear of losing faith or fear of disease and death.

I could have answered the other stuff but it is more effort than it is worth at the moment for me.

Best episode of the fall season. Rafal's choice is so compeling. Never in a million years could I have thought that this anime could be this impactful. This decision reminds me of the idea behind Erwin's charge in AOT. Amazing

The score would be 8.50+ rn if the animation was better, but theres nothing we could do anymore. These anime is very unique and amazing i can't wait for the next episode l, if demon slayer was carried by animation, orb was carried by the story which is a good thing.

5/5 episode
@Mackyreels If you want Better animation than this, go watch Uzumaki. The animation Madhouse is providing this anime is better than 80% of the seasonals.

Wow, this episode left me speechless.
They really killed the main character in episode 3. Wow. So this means the guys we saw at the end will be the "new" protagonists of the anime. Either that, or Rafal is alive, but I seriously doubt that, because now it makes sense why the opening, while clearly showing there was going to be a time skip, they didn't show Rafal grown up, but always as a child. Also, since we still have a least 9 more episodes with this ending, it's going be a bit sad to end the episodes with the 2 characters that we were so invested in, and died in first few episodes.
But what Rafal said, was right, inspiration is something that doesn't disappear when the person dies, so his death will be an inspiration for others that believe in the heliocentrism model, which is much more important than for him to continue his studies, alone, without all of the notes that he had from Humbert and his own notes.
Rafal was really mature for his age (he was only 12), and I'm pretty sure that his father must have regreted horribly on his decision. His father is also a really interesting character, because it shows what would have been Rafal's life if he chose to accept the conditions and burn every research that he had, and go to the university and study theology: it would be a depressing life, where he would always live afraid of getting caught of doing something that the church didn't agree on, and keeping a facade that he "enjoyed" his life, when in reality he didn't, because his love was for astronomy, not theology, and in time, he would just forget about his research about the heliocentrism model.
Really curious to see how the anime will progress after this twist, but I just don't know how to react to this, it was so unexpected, I thought that Rafal would eventually die, but I thought it would be at the end of the anime, when he was older, not now.

Also, the scene of Rafal's death was so well done, Madhouse is cooking with this anime, the direction of the scenes have been really good. The transition from him watching the stars for his final moments, to him being crucified, and being burnt, to then just having a pile of ashes by morning was CHILLING.
I feel like this anime is certainly going to be the dark horse of the season, and we can already see by the score that has already went up from a 7.8 to a 8.0 with this episode.
Can't wait to see the next episode and what they'll be doing with the story now.

The scene between Nowak and Rafal made me cry t.t I wonder if we'll see the former again? Even he seemed to feel really guilty about the prospect of having to torture a child. Great character. Badass child.

Potocki must feel SUPER guilty for turning Raphal in now.

I think we are certainly seeing him, since he appears in the opening, with a older look than what he had in these 3 episodes. Also, the fact they started the anime with him, is probably pointing it out, that maybe he will be the one seeing the inspiration that Rafal was talking about surviving in each generation, and the ideas being passed on from main cast to main cast.

@PokefanPT you're right! I came to the same conclusion after looping the OP for hours on end lol. I really want to see his character development. Maybe he might eventually help those who were inspired, after seeing that you can't torture curiosity out of someone

(This is a crazy theory, but maybe the girl in the OP is the daughter he talked about and he can't bring himself to turn her in. That'd be insane)

Wow this shit is wild.
Not completely burning his notes is one thing, but wearing Hubert's necklace like that in the open is most likely what gave it all away. Totally understandable and realistic for a 12yo but I did not expect him to follow Hubert this soon lol. It's very nice that he's able to make such a brave decision though when I was just expecting him to recant and continue astronomy secretly on his own, but I guess that's just too unrealistic for a child in his position to do. Beautifully executed episode imo.

I have the exact same theory! I always wondered if that litle girl was his daughter, or eventually Rafal's daughter (well, this 2nd one didn't age well), and I do think his daughter might become one of those inspired by Rafal, and since he just wants to protect his daughter, and after being so shocked by Rafal, he might switch from one side to the other one! They gave us that info really early on, and I don't think it was for nothing! Glad to see I'm not the only one that thinks that!

I think the last time I considered an anime a 10/10 for a partial runtime was with Vinland Saga S1 from episode 1 to 4. Now I will have to add Chi from episode 1 to 3 into that group.

WHAT? You're telling me this anime is taking the successor approach where the theory will be passed down through generations until someone somewhere is in the position to prove it? This is completely unexpected and certainly an approach that can go well as well as not since there's a risk to leeting your main characters die like that. In any case, it was a powerful episode full of thought provoking declarations and now we are 10 years later with the continuation.

I'm so invested in this.

@watsym changing the visuals every time a new arc starts would be pretty spoilery to those who haven’t seen the show yet. Rafal being the center focus makes more sense since it shows that even though he’s gone, we can still feel his influence and presence going forward in the story. The opening also already shows the whole cast anyway and even events from the last few chapters, so they’re probably just gonna stick with this one until the end.

Novak popping out of nowhere to harass Rafal feels so forced and out of place. At least the Simpsons made it a comical satire, in here the author couldn't give a proper reasoning for Novak to hound him after several days or even weeks had passed since their last encounter. If Novak felt he was corrupted by Hubert's teachings in episode 2, why did he wait until now to continue his hounding?

Also, do they hand out poppy seeds to heretic prisoners? I feel that they would want to avoid these priosoners to kill themselves before being tortured and burnt alive. I see no other way why would Rafal had poppy seeds in the first place. And if they plan to make it a huge ruse with a fake death later on, that's a stinkier diaper full of poo worse than the historical innacuracies.

Rafal tearing down the deal given him by the church was only lacking upbeat J-rock music to cement the shonen tropes of younguns defying the unfair status quo established by big bad mean adults. Thank god this is a seinen, am I right guys? /s

@Kimurah I'm mostly with you, though I'm sure this will upset a lot of people here. I'll even say this is an above average anime with strong story-telling and voice acting, though I'm not understanding the forum hype this series is receiving to date. This is certainly not a rewatchable anime, nor has it presented either the heart or stakes to make Episode 4 a must-view for me. It's just this straightforward, grim, kinda joyless thing with an anti-Christian/pro-reason bent that I can get behind philosophically but any entertainment I've received from it is ephemeral. I'm more interested to talk about (and try to understand) exactly why people are so excited by this.

Rafal facing Nowak in the coincidence of him wering Hubert's necklace, but for his father Potocki to notice his research on heliocentrism, he needs to be more careful.

What's baffling even more is Potocki revising Rafal's theory on heliocentrism, and Nowak's suspicion on him is not founded without him being a past heretic who recanted his ways to geocentrism. Of course, without any substantial evidence, Nowak can't prove Rafal's execution by heresy, and that makes Potocki all the more nervous to give in to the pressure, leading to his own son's capture.

Not all is lost before Rafal can reconsider his ways to fit into the societal mold, but to lose all the research material that he has accumulated all to this point and even his life, the shock to everyone that he willingly gave up his life for the truth, his life may be gone, but there'll be people like him who'll rise up against the stereotypicals of the world to challenge their beliefs. And the last drink to douse himself in poppy seeds, Nowak is in shock of how Rafal broke their deal, but it's how he decided to let the legacy outlast even himself.

With the death of Rafal, and a 10-year timeskip of someone else also having Hubert's necklace, the research lives on...

One man's willing sacrifice to progress research, a selfless individual is who Rafal is.

Love it when a story allows their characters to die. I'm guessing the story will be a collection of future generations continuing the legacy (if Rafal is still alive I'd be pissed).
I'm personally not a history guy but I do know this is very reminiscent of Galileo Galilei where his theories conflicted with the catholic church, though pretty sure a lot of people already knew this, just found it out myself. Show keeps giving off Vinland Saga vibes.

@Kimurah I think it's cause Nowak was trying to find evidence to catch him, since it is pretty clear he was suspicious of Rafal from episode 2. But as we know from Potocki, he could not find any and so directly confronted him to ascertain the truth. And Hubert's necklace and Rafal's reaction gave it away that he was still continuing his research.

And they do not give away poppy seeds to prisoners lol. If you watch the episode carefully, Rafal had a feeling that he might be turned in to the inquisitors by Potocki when he asked him about heliocentrism and heard Rafal's answer. So he prepared the pouch on him just in case. We even see him hiding the pouch on him before he goes to sleep.

And finally, going against the authority is not a Shonen trope, it is a storytelling trope. Not just in anime, but even many of the literatures greatest pieces have it's characters rise up to the status quo. Would you call them shonen as well? What a strange thing to try and critique a story for. Especially when the story has built Rafal's character enough that it makes sense for him to do that.

I do agree on the animation though. It is pretty lacking on that front. But since it is a dialogue based anime with great direction and story boarding, I don't think it is that important. And given the reception of the past 3 episodes, I think most people agree.

No, he is definitely the protagonist, one of many, cause that's how the scientific process works. It is the effort of numerous people in the span of thousands of years to discover the truth by questioning, testing, peer reviewing, and building knowledge on top of existing revelations.

As the old dude said, even the wrong answer is important in the quest for the truth.

This is really really high tier stuff, I love Rafal's character! I hope he isn't actually dead because if he is then this was an amazing and extremely well executed plot twist.
He was willing to die for his ideals rather than live a pathetic life of servitude. Woah.

I got spoil MC death and I even didn't start to watch the show.
I hate when a character give you the MC vibe and is replaced by "the real" MC.

Don't know if I should watch or skip :(

@Raikiri29 He didn't give the vibe, he was the MC.
What if there's no such thing as a more "real" mc, I mean there's no guarantee the next one will be safe either.
And for that matter, we don't know anything about the next MC, not even if there is a link

Oh wow, didn't expect my bro to die. I was expecting plot armor to kick in anytime. This is gonna be feeling historical with our pioneer mcs dying for their shared belief. Straight out blurting his belief for heliocentrism in front of so many people will definitely leave a lingering effect of both good and bad as it can serve as both as a sign of his conviction which will inspire others in question to finally search for the truth while also serving as a warning to everyone of how the church can be cruel to anyone, even a kid if they ever go against the scriptures.

so I take it it's gonna be a story about the research being gradually developed and accepted rather than about particular main characters?
tbh so far it's pretty boring

@PokefanPT I hope they change it every time MC changes, it would be really awkward to have this OP/ED next episode when everything from it doesn't reflect the new arc

That would actually be really cool. I mean, Chainsaw Man had a different ending for each episode, changing the visuals wouldn't be that radical compared to that, but it would require a lot more work too.

changing the visuals every time a new arc starts would be pretty spoilery to those who haven’t seen the show yet. Rafal being the center focus makes more sense since it shows that even though he’s gone, we can still feel his influence and presence going forward in the story. The opening also already shows the whole cast anyway and even events from the last few chapters, so they’re probably just gonna stick with this one until the end.

But this might also be a problem too, it could become quite spoilerlish over time. And ending the episodes with the remainder of Humbert and Rafal's inspiration would be interesting too
