Mangaka Uoto's completed series that won awards and has gotten recognition from other famed authors, this 2-Cour long show will impress.

15th Century Poland that's the plot of the show, teaching youngsters the brilliance of centrism, lays the brilliant young mind of Rafal who is ambitious to want to learn theology and venture out to the world to preach its religion. And as an orphan, that is accepted from the masses, but things like God and such are forbidden, even his astronomy research on the stars. And his Professor Potocki wanting him to seek out a former scholar-cum-heretic that will help him realign to theology, the sight of the night sky is the rational beauty that Rafal cannot afford to look away from.

The man that Rafal is requested to seek is quite the mysterious figure that truths cannot be hidden from him, and Hubert can easily sniff out insincere lies from the abstract truth. Of course, his release is an act of loyalty betrayal for freedom for his research on astronomy, and Rafal getting threatened on the spot to continue his hobby, it's just fate hanging in the balance between life and death...that all whizzes away at the sight that Hubert brings him to.

The forbidden research of the sky, stars and cosmos a.k.a Heliocentrism, this is Hubert's research, and he wants Rafal to join him in his research, which is ambitious.

Deep philosophy, the anime.

A fairly interesting first episode! Rafał just has so much charisma with his personality while the time setting this takes place also holds a lot of potential.

Others like Hubert carries an aura of mysterious vibe to their character. Overall, I do like the setting for what they've showed us in this episode. Would love to also see more of Rafal's character background but this is a 2-cour so plenty of time to develop him.

I'm glad this anime doesn't have the annoying warning "this fiction story is not related to real people blah blah blah" because it's very important to not forget that there are people being punished for bringing scientific advance to our world.

Rafal seems very interested in astronomy but he has to study Theology because of the time they're in where Heretics and many such things are reported. You can't do your research etc. because that is considered against GOD. We saw some gruesome scenes in the show, anyone who tries to speak against their beliefs will be executed.

But, looks like Hubert reignited that fire that was needed for Rafal with his research which states, that it's the Earth that moves around the Sun. Oh... this is so good. I love it so much. The first episode was brilliant. Really good direction wise and the OST from Kensuke Ushio was so beautiful. I love it.

Fine episode was nice, must watch whole title till the end, all I can say is in this gif which only the chosen ones will know or even "hear" that.
I wonder how much Rafał will learn/debunk the studies in university of Kraków.

There's something uniquely magical about how a fact that isn't questioned (by most) in the modern day to still sound so reality-warping when revealed. Rafal's expression really said it all.

A fictional depiction of the origin of the heliocentrism with fictional characters instead of Copernicus. Right up my alley, heck I always wanted to see such events unfold. Also as someone who's been fascinated by the stars from an early age and wanted to study astronomy but ended up studying something else that also hit kind of close to home.

Zip it up Kochanski. If he kept glazing like that he would've ended up on the stake.

Interesting start, much more philosophical than expected. A seinen adaptation as a change of pace is almost always a blessing nowadays, especially when it's such a particular setting.

Really enjoyed this.

I have only one complaint, but maybe someone can tell me: The inquisitor not being a member of the church so he can bang his wife and have a daugher - is that historically accurate? I mean, bishops making such exceptions and naming non-church members inqisitors? That felt unnatural. But if it's historically accurate, I won't complain.
If you haven't watched "Fantastic Children", don't talk about "best anime". Thank you.

@MyllerPhiem Hard to tell, since a controversial fact like this would likely be off the records. Apparently, heliocentrists weren't burned either, but who really knows.

I saw some people talking about flat earth, but the theory defended by the church at that time was not that the Earth was flat, but rather that it was an immobile sphere at the center of the universe. It's not the shape that's wrong, it's everything else.

This episode was really good. The direction of this anime is incredible, as expected by Madhouse. The anime completely reached my expectations and even surprassed them! I really like the idea of an anime about the model of heliocentrism, and how much the researchers at the time had to endure to be able to prove that they were right about it, since the church was completely against it, and made a witch hunt to anyone who supported that. And this witch hunting was shown right in this episode, in the 1st scene, and then later we see that same man being burnt in public.
This theme needs to be adressed in a really particular way, and I think this anime has done it right! Really excited to see how the anime will develop, and I'm happy to know this anime will be 25 episodes long, since I think a anime like this couldn't develop much in only 12/13 episodes! The song at the end (that it's going to be the opening it seems) was surprisingly chill, and I was not expecting that, but appreciate it, not sure if the anime is going to be intense in all episodes or not, but I suppose, at least for now, we won't be seeing the real effects of the witch hunting by the church for a while.

  • The source material got the 2nd place in astounding comics 2022.
  • As NHK is a public broadcaster, its degree of expression is limited, compared to commercial broadcasters. So, I wondered how they treat violence. It was kind of weak because of the shade.
  • Though I heard the theme for the comics for the author is something different, one of the notions for the comics for me is horrible aspects of religion. If you come to think of it, a lot of discriminations and wars are coming from religion.

that was a really good start, pretty interesting stuff and i can't believe this hasn't even touched the 8.00 rating when there's already 9.00+ overrated stuff this season. for some reason people were complaining about the animation before it even came out but this doesn't even look bad, and the directing is pretty neat as well. might have to check out the manga if it continues to be this good. oh and there's tsudaken, which is a win on it's own.

Decided to pick this up on a whim, and boy was I impressed by the atmosphere set up in this first episode. Rather than an anime it feels like I'm watching a first person documentary, given how much this story takes from its historical setting in Poland, and the conflict between the Church and proponents of anything against its teachings.

Holy shit, I like this, I really like this. I didn't even know about this show until a few hours ago, I just saw the KV, which immediately caught my eye and some reviews about the premiere and thought it was interesting. Then I saw it's by madhouse and said "now, I've got to watch this" and it didn't disappoint.

It's really interesting to see an anime about how heliocentrism was found, coupled with heretic shit. Of course, this is not going to be the most historically accurate show, but I am sure I can still learn a thing or two from it, besides having a good story.

Wow, are you telling me we're getting an anime about the helicentrism revolution that took place in the 15th century with a heavy focus in astronomy and the conflicts it has caused with religion believers? Now that's what I call fucking interesting and it really doesn't shy of being raw in details both gruesome and in the tools being used. Rafal ios gonna have his whole theory of the world literally turned upside down and I wonder what will come in this adaptation of this finished manga in terms of presentation and soundtrack which is so far so good.

Man, I'm so excited for this as someone who from a young was fascinated with these concepts. Hopefully they do them justice.

Just in case. This anime is pure fantasy. It's only remotely inspired by that. I'll remind you that most of the educated people were either ministers of the church or studied there. The Church itself didn't really punish for research. There was even a papal bull saying that the heliocentric model could be used in calculations. I remind you that Copernicus' book was published in 1543 and presented to the Pope before it was published. It was banned in 1616. The famous scientists who were persecuted suffer not because of their passion for astronomy, that's just a background story. The stories of Galileo and Giordano Bruno are examples of this. It's a misconception that they were persecuted for heliocentrism.
I'll also point out. Many people like Copernicus, Kepler, etc. are now called scientists. Mostly they were engineers, theologians, natural philosophers and just philosophers, scholars, etc. The term scientist as we understand it is quite new (18th century).
By the way. A boy going to university is not a fantasy. A homeless man could also get in. Especially if someone paid for it. But talented could get in for free. They lived in dormitories, worked as servants for paid students and university professors, and worked part-time in the city. Obviously it's easier for the rich and noble to study.
The thing that really puzzled me. A guard with signs, who can read and check the records... Oh, that's nonsense. Anyway, the plates are supposed to be two waxed boards and the stick is a stylus. Taking notes. You come in and you put them down on paper. Ink and pen is not the most comfortable thing to use, and it's not very portable. It's fantastic to scribble on a tiny piece of paper with a pen on a weight. And learning by candlelight. His father would tear his ears off for such a waste. Candles are expensive. A lamp at best.
There's also a very gross error. This guy is walking around with a book that's very modern. In his day, books were usually quite big, VERY expensive, and no one would have let a loafer fiddle around with a book unsupervised. Went to the library, read. Read, left the book. Walked away. Or the teacher would read the book to the pupils. And on top of that, it was usually read aloud. Reading to oneself is a very new thing. It wasn't until the 19th century that people had enough texts to practise reading to oneself. And then only a few people with access to large archives could read fast.

@Cersil Thanks for the clarification. After watching this episode I did few research about church and educated scholars conflict during that era but other than Galileo life story I couldn't find anything mind-boggling that this anime have presented soo far.
