I'm trying to expand my PTW list so I'd like to hear about more obscure, quality anime

My hidden gems/obscure stats are mostly showing movies and sequels rn

My main recs out of these list would be

- Digimon Frontier
Cuz it's my all time fav, don't forget to give the OG Digimon Adventure a watch too

- Millennium Actress
Satoshi Kon movie, top notch quality both story and animation-wise, very interesting direction with a touch of surrialism, and i think this'll be more down your alley than his more famouse Perfect Blue

- Hakuhaden
If you want to explore 1950s style animation

And i would've said Versailles no Bara, but you've already watched it and it don't seem to be your thing

But, if you want a few more hidden jems not on those list try these out too

- Da Li Si Rizhi
- Yoru wa Neko to Issho
- Fake (BL - i was a lil hesitent bout this one, but saw you quite enjoyed Umibe no Étranger which in terms of raunchiness level is similar, also the story of this one is quite nice, especially the ending)
- Thermae Romae Novae
- Gaikotsu Shotenin Honda-san
- Re-Main
- Aria
- Ride Your Wave
- Planetes

Kudos to you as despite being an elite MAL patron, for whatever reason I didn't even know this section of one's profile existed until now. I had only checked the statistics section as far as the display showing a bar graph of the distribution of your numerical scores of various anime.

Anyway, the ones it lists for me, as requested:

Hidden Gems:

- Koi Kaze
- Kaguya-hime no Monogatari
- Kaiba
- Aishiteruze Baby
- Beatless

And under Most Obscure:

- Hashire Melos (a film)
- Kokoro Toshokan
- Human Bug Daigaku
- Bullbuster
- Gallery Fake

I wouldn't even call them hidden gems, they are just lesser known anime:
Akagi
MF Ghost
Aoi Bungaku Series - maybe the only hidden gem on here, never seen anybody talk about it I came across it randomly and the mc reminded me of Light so I had to watch
One outs, which was actually somewhat popular a decade or so ago

wow, I've never seen so many Kobato enjoyers in one place. Anyway heres mine:

https://myanimelist.net/profile/epidemia78/statistics/anime-scores

I've talked a lot about my hidden gems so lets skip to one of the obscure ones.

Giant Gorg has the feel of an 80s hollywood action/adventure movie like Indiana Jones meets ET except instead of a boy forming a bond with a cute little alien, it's a giant mech. For the most part it's a pretty good time, if a bit old-fashioned. But theres a massive shift in tone near the end. there's a scene depicting a guy beating a woman half to death with his FISTS and it just goes on and on and on. Borderline pornographic. It is so out of place and very much a WTF kind of moment. Makes me wonder what the hell was the director's mental malfunction. Was he going through a bitter divorce or something? Like, DAMN!

Princess Jellyfish sounds fun, I think I'll check it out.

Heike Monogatari
- Glad you've given this a 9, OP. Beautiful show

Deaimon
- Slice-of-life, making Japanese sweets, laid-back adult male protagonist, watercolor-y art

Overtake
- Formula racing, but primarily a drama with adults

Raven of the Inner Palace
- Palace intrigue and mystery in Ancient China-like setting, female protagonist. Very Apothecary Diaries

Tearmoon Empire
- Princess "re-do" story except that she's dumb. Very My Next Life as a Villainess
@perseii Raven of the Inner Palace, is it that good compared with The Apothecary Diaries?

@shiro-seishun I think people generally rate Raven of the Inner Palace lower, and I get that, but I also think it's way too under-watched and under-appreciated in comparison.

I liked it, almost as much as The Apothecary Diaries, personally. It has a critical lack of Maomao and lavish production values, but it's an intriguing fantasy story in its own right. Definitely worth a watch if you've finished The Apothecary Diaries and are looking for something similar to tide you over.

Black Rock Shooter TV is easily the best unpopular anime I've seen. It is so unpopular that it is rarely mentioned even in this kind of threads. It is so well-crafted you may not even notice any flaws on your first watch, and even rewatching it with more critical mindset, you can't say that it is generally worse than many cult classic shows.
Black★Rock Shooter (TV) is beyond its time arthouse fantasy/psychological drama/psychological horror/action. Should you watch it? See my review.

Not sure how this works, but this list is a bit weird. Why is Code Geass a hidden gem?
I would have assumed Kakugo no Susume to make the list, but apparently not.

Okay, part of the problem was that I hadn't added all my watched anime (tedious to do, since I've seen so many), so I went back and added a bunch of lesser known anime to my MAL list:

Hidden Gems: Gintama Benizakura Movie, Erin, Yowamushi Pedal, Gurren Lagann Movie 1, and Kuragehime. More people need to watch Kuragehime and The Beast Player Erin for sure.

Most obscure: Prima Doll,Mou Ippon,Sayonara Watashi no Cramer, and Monsters(based off a character from One Piece). I really enjoyed Mou Ippon. Such a shame that I couldn't find any new manga chapters anywhere.

Gunslinger Girl is the most obscure one that MAL is showing me. Can confirm, it is a diamond, and it is hidden.
@johneaston

I second the opinion on Gunslinger Girl. It is hardly hard to get (it is on Crunchyroll) but it does not show up on lists of "best of". A true hidden gem.

For me it's Full Moon wo Sagashite, Houkago Teibou Nisshi, Slow Loop, Kaleido Star, and Tiger & Bunny. They're not all super underwatched, but all solid shows that are at least somewhat overlooked. I know Tiger & Bunny is popular among women in Japan, but it isn't very popular over here. Also, I have cosplayed as Hiyori from Slow Loop but I don't think anyone recognized the character.
