Thrice upon a time is the last of the 4 rebuild of evangelion movies so you need to watch 1.11-3.33 in order to understand 3.0+1.0

Before watching Thrice upon a Time you'll need to watch 3.0 as that's where the new films mainly diverge from the original series. I think there's a couple differences in 2.0 but from memory there's nothing major? The first two are basically just the original series but cut down and with new animation.

The first two are basically just the same as the series no? Weren't the plot changes all from 3.0?

1.0 has a couple different scenes, mostly with how the angels are portrayed, but I believe there’s a very small Gendo flashback as well. 2.0 has far more changes, including the introduction of Mari, all the changes involving Asuka, and the ending of the movie.

The rebuilds change A LOT, I would highly recommend watching 1.0, 2.0, & 3.0 before thrice upon a time because you will be so lost otherwise. People say there isn’t much difference in the first two rebuild movies but there are a lot of subtle changes if you look for them.

watch order goes as follows

original:
tv anime , end of eva

rebuild:
1.11, 2.22, 3.33, thrice upon a time

the first rebuild movie is exactly the same as the first 6 episodes of the tv anime, it starts diverging from 2.22 onwards.

You have to watch EoE and then the rebuilds and then Thrice. It’s technically not just a “retelling.” It’s different, I just can’t explain or it would spoil.
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

the last half of 2.0 is wildly different from the show and neccesary, 1.0 is the only rebuild film that doesnt branch off but it sets up the core changes and is pretty good.

@StarZone1 2.22 is where the plot starts to change a little bit until the end, still should watch 1.11 tho imo

End of Evangelion is the actual ending of the original series; the original series ran out of budget hence the weird last few episodes, whereas once Hideaki Anno recouped enough money was he able to expand and mostly end the anime the way he envisioned it.

So for the watch order of “canon” Eva you watch the episodic series and then End of Evangelion. EoE is like a retelling or different ending from the series picking up before the last 3 episodes. For thrife upon a time you need to watch the other rebuild movies as there are characters and subjects in 3.0 that you wont understand unless you watch 1.0 and 2.0 though since most of those two are similar to the series you might feel them boring and unimportant which isnt the case

the sequel is EoE "The End of Evangelion" followed by the rebuild films. People like to argue that the rebuilds are a simple alternative retelling of the series. While I don't blame people for seeing it that way, the Re:build films are actually in truth a sequel to EoE

Evangelion 1.11: You Are (Not) Alone is a case in point direct sequel to EoE as when shinji is on the phone waiting for Misato & then sees a "phantom Rei"
you can see the ocean. is red, full of blood & LcL (like the end of EoE) with what appears to be chalk-like outlines depecting deceased Angels like when Asuka fought the S2 units in EoE
