It is a bit strange that the school allows for gundam duels that could be lethal given the damage to the mechs, surprised more students don't die. In terms of characters and production the first episode exceeded any expectations I had, its really well done, just hope the story is good though given the setting decisions don't make that much sense.

This project is being officially promoted as a project for a more modern and younger audience "around the world", so this is probably how Sunrise sees modern anime fans. I don't know how far this will go with yuri and politics, but given the direction you mentioned and Ichiro's latest scenarios (one of his recent projects even contains a gay twist and a message about migrants), there's a big chance.

Really great episode.
It’s my first gundam anime that i watching and tbh the animation is so good and the visuals.
I like that they mix a little of yuri in the end of this episode.

The "now you're engaged" twist isn't a yuri per se, it's just a cliffhanger for the end of the episode at the moment. It all depends on how it develops further.

Yeah of course you are right!:3

I'm a little bit salty that the first Gundam step into an LGBT era begins with a letter "L", not "G", but to be fair there's gay (maybe?) Gundam character before, but not as the protagonist like this one.

But the first episode overcome my bias and now I'm rooting for lesbian love. I'm yaoi specialist and I have zero experience in yuri. Can any yuri specialist tell me who's top and bottom?

I've no doubt that this will turn into an amazing anime but I've one concern like no other, I'm very intolerant to a high death toll. If this show turn into "who'll be killed this week" kind of anime, I'll immediately drop, no matter how good they're, just like I did to the rest of Gundam franchise, the only one I can finish is Gundam Build.

Calm down dude, this is just the cliffhanger of the first episode, they haven't been announced as a romantic couple yet lol. And yes, there have been gay people on the show before, both male and potentially female.

I’ve never really been interested in gundam and was considering watching this one as my first. Now I’m hearing about it being yuri bait, so I guess I’ll pass on it for now.

The whole yuri bait is in the final twist. But rest assured, the shippers will spin it similarly to Licorice, lol.

Damn, there are definitely some similarities to Utena in this show. I can only hope that it doesn't end up like Utena, though. There are two Utena anime out there already and neither of them are good.

Also, lol @ all the yurikeks in this thread.

What shows are you talking about? About Revue Sarlight and Vermeil? But I thought both shows were good.

I'll laugh if Ichiro didn't think about it for long, just "oh, I want to make Utena out of this! Duels, yuri bait, school!".

Seeing the Gundam in action was awesome. I guess this set 10 years or so after the prologu. Don't have a clue why she thought she could take on Guel in another person's mobile suit.

The way Eri (Suletta) talks is very polite but the girl has guts and the skill to back it up. Now that they've got a hint that someone has a Gundam, which were supposed to be brought to an end back in the prologue, I wonder what they will do about the whole Gundam thing.

As a long time fan of the franchise, this was quite disappointing imo. Annoying cliché's and tropes make for boring stories, it was also pretty easy to predict where the episode was going relatively early on. The pacing seams too fast as well.

There is a lot to love about this first episode.

First: An adorkable protagonist is undoubtedly a breath of fresh air for the Gundam franchise. Suletta Mercury is just here to steal your heart.

Second: Gorgeous character design. Everyone looks distinct and easy on the eyes, particularly Nika and Shaddiq. Bonus point for that Garma expy and his hair twirl.

Third: Mechas and their sound design. Dilanza is super awesome with its bulky armour, feather crest, and beam trident. And there's Aerial's badass GUND-BIT funnel-shield.

Fourth: That orange Haro docked on a camera drone.

All in all, it feels like a fresh new start for the Gundam franchise while retaining some lovable classic Gundam tropes. It has the distinct, unique style of G-Reco (minus the weird dialogue and pacing) and Turn A. Can't wait to see the next episode.

Very interesting premiere following that gruesome prologue from a few weeks ago. Suletta is definitely an atypical Gundam protagonist. Not the typical hot head we get, or silent type, that Gundam usually has. Instead a fidgety stammering girl who's not sure of herself expect for her mother and her Gundam. Probably not the way that Suletta wanted her school life to start. Accidentally rescuing a girl trying to escape and dueling said girl's fiance. Miorine has some problems of her own with a fiance like Guel. Not exactly the nicest guy in the world but apparently all conflicts at this school are decided by duels. Which sounds good on paper but is actually very lopsided in practice. Since someone who's as big an asshole as Guel can become top dog and force Miorine to be his fiance. Really glad that Suletta could take that spot instead. She seems to get along with Miorine better than Guel does. The visuals when Suletta took over the Gundam were exceptional. Sunrise showing they do mecha like no other can. My jaw was on the floor the whole time Suletta unleashed all those mini beam shooters that form the shield on her Gundam. Stellar beginning with the action and characters, I'm curious to see how the branches of that corporation fit into this.

Absolutely amazing! This series is my gateway to Gundam series and I couldn't be happier to say that, it's perfect. The aesthetic, background, frames & overall animation was amazing. Even CGI was great!
The main character Sulleta is an interesting character and after watching prologue I want to know what happened between the timeksip, what happened to her mother?!! I know it will be answered and I can't wait.

The fight itself was hype and amazing. When she destroyed the opponents Gundam in pieces, it was amazing and the Ost was spot on! Easily an 8.5/10 episode.
Oh! Forgot to mention, Sulleta is now the groom of miorine, lol. We have a mecha + yuri anime and I'm also watching an another yuri fighting anime right now, Lycoria Recoil, great!

The spoiled rich kids are just as in danger as the normal students if a plasma blade or rifle beam hits their cockpit, its an absurd way of training, imagine training fighter jet pilots with live missiles against each other.

YURI GUNDAM?!!!! LETS GOOO

Tomato scene is an Amuro call back, damn that takes me back

Suletta slapping Guel on the ass had me dying.

Miorine and Suletta are going to have some amazing chemistry by the end of this I can tell. Was so satisfying seeing Guel get his ass beat so effortlessly.

The sakuga during the gundam attack at the end was incredible. I love the more modern designs sunrise went with as well. Only complaint is it’s pretty stupid to have students duelling in actual mobile suits.. surely people have died before??

The YOASOBI song seems to fill in some plot gaps in the story too which is really cool.

trailer got me really hyped, first ep isn't bad, but also not that good.
i like how the plot focuses more on the other characters instead of the main character, it really helps flesh out the environment more. i'm also interested in whether this anime can bring new perspective to the yuri genre. it's rare to see yuri declared so explicitly in ep1.
however, the worldbuildling seems really forced, the baddies fall into standard archetypes, and the whole story is nothing new.
hoping the next eps are better, because right now, ep1 doesn't have any of the themes introduced in the pv. would be sad to let that amazing prologue completely go to waste.

Licorice has never been or promoted as a yuri show, and it only has one cliffhanger so far after the first episode. Seriously, I never thought people could jump to conclusions so quickly.

Dude, just wait for new episodes. It is not known what kind of chemistry they will have (forced marriage leads you to the conclusion that the characters will have good chemistry? Are you living in the 19th century or what?), not to mention whether they will be a couple at all. I get that yuri fans love this, but the way people literally jump to conclusions about their entire relationship and the nature of the show based on one short scene at the end of the first episode really scares me.

Nobody said they DEFINITELY wouldn't be a couple. The show still has too many chances for that. I just find it disturbing that people jump to conclusions about character relationships before they're actually shown. It's like that joke about people who expect porn characters to get married because they "obviously love each other very much."

I think this might go the path of Utena in one way or another. Can't say anything is set in stone yet, but it does seem that it might be a Yuri, key word is MIGHT. (Looking at you, RobertBobert, before you try and start shit.)
Anyways, for those who really enjoyed this first episode, I recommend reading ゆりかごの星, which is available to read on the official G Witch site. Aerial is such a sweetheart, but I recommend reading it, because it offers a nice bit of background in regards to Mercury and Suletta, written from Aerial's perspective.

No, no offense. It just reminded me of shows like Carol and Tuesday, when people calling it a yuri show only to find out that there would be two female leads. And you guessed it, they weren't gay... True, half of the characters around them were gay, but that's another story.

Regardless of yuri bait, I didn't notice that they made ALL the male characters bad. Ichiro certainly loves to abuse lame tropes (dude, why do you hate character fathers so much?), but this show is clearly a far cry from the "all men are ugly, that's why I became a lesbian" cliché.

Well, the duel could easily be read as "a strong woman saves another from male toxicity" and other shit, which is its own lame gay cliché, but other than that I don't see it as much of a toxic yuri story. At least Suletta is tomboy enough to conclude that if it really is yuri, it's more because Japanese writers seem to be afraid that the audience won't be able to empathize with the pursuit of a male love interest even in a show with a female MC. If you look at male shows with boy-ish female MCs, this is a fairly common problem. They just take the straight romantic tropes and replace the male MC with a female character.

Anyway, if it really turns out to be yuri, it will be funny to realize that the mainstream in every sense Ichiro turned out to be more radical than Okada, who is openly feminist and more serious in her attitude to yuri. She even made sure that there were gays and bisexuals in Orphans, by the way.

Thats one impressive school. But that was one hell of a overreaction from her upon seeing the person doing EVA. The training suits used by the students look pretty neat. But man the school's grounds sure were expansive. The dual sure injected some nice excitement into their first day. Looks like schools are also places where company takeovers are learned as well. But using duals to decide things sure is interesting. Getting used to the culture and food is going to be an interesting task for Suletta. The jerk sure had one hell of a experience though being spanked. But in the dual Suletta sure gave him one hell of a lesson one that he won't be forgetting anytime soon. Upsetting the rankings and gaining a bride in the process that's one hell of a first day that Suletta had. Overall a solid opening ep that while impressive visually also did well to introduce the setting and the cast as well as the kind of sub plots we can expect to see as well. Catchy ending as well.

I do not argue, but I was confused only by one thing. As someone who literally wanted to run away from the academy and even went into a duel to avoid being forced into a forced marriage, she is rather neutral about the idea of returning to the academy to become someone's forced bride through winning the duel. It's like the whole dueling thing was just to get yuri engaged. Unless she uses it as part of a plan against the academy or her father, it literally doesn't make sense.

Gundam is back in spectacular fashion. A plot mirroring Shoujo Kakumei Utena in a school setting like the beginning of Gunbuster. The animation is absolutely incredible, as it should be for Sunrise's flagship franchise. It's looking to be another fantastic entry in the Gundam series.

So, for this first episode, after Prelude... it is awkward but at the same time amazing how the mix the dark ambient of the universe with the infantile side of the school.
The art, and the animation it is top notch as usual from a Sunrise's Gundam Anime. Hope the development of this be good as Tekketsu or Hathaway.
