L is just way too disgusting, it seems like the author dies within 40 seconds from a heart attack if they don't include some form of sexual assault in their work, toxic relationships are romanticized and often the MC starting as straight gets converted to gay through rape, abuse and/or harassment by a hot gay bishounen. And during these sexual assault scenes they usually play comical music to make light of it or show the victim to be blushing to make it look like he's just in denial and secretly wants it to give the illusion that it's not actually assault/rape.
My knowledge on this is a bit shallow but I do recall there has been discourse on how this plays out when its aimed at a female audience and when its aimed specifically at a gay male audience from pretty much the start of the genre. I don't know whether what few BL series I have seen were aimed one way or the other... that being said I have seen plenty of female targeted rom-coms where the male love interest is off-puttingly rapey (I wonder if it has its own sub-genre name) too and that's not even a specifically anime problem or err style... I dunno maybe audiences want it, makes me look sideways at it...
I do think though that this trope is to some degree kind of a fixture of same sex rom-coms and dramas though? As a lot of them seem to be about characters discovering themselves and usually one of the characters is err more aware of their orientation and so they are "pushier"? And that can get very icky very quickly... more so if it's played for titliation.
| Based on your list you've only completed 1 BL which is SasaMiya which is one of the better ones (unfortunately I couldn't like it because the MC is a fudanshi that goes around labeling his schoolmates as seme and uke and imagines stuff with them). As for the ones you are currently watching, I didn't bother watching Sankaku Mado since the author's interview had red flags indicating I wouldn't like the content so I have no clue about it, Uraboku is one of the rare BLs that I actually liked and given that you've watched 26 episodes of Kyo Kara Maoh it should be pretty obvious as to how Wolfram constantly harasses Yuuri despite Yuuri constantly telling him that he's not into guys. BL is a genre by women and for women and bara/gei komi is supposed to be by gay men for gay men but I have no clue about that since it never interested me. But from what I can tell, gay men watch BL that's aimed at women too, there are plenty of times that gay people have called me homophobic for pointing out toxic relationships and rape scenes in BL. Yes there there are some rapey straight romances as well, Hana Yori Dango is one which seriously pissed me off. There's a trope called All Girls Want Bad Boys which most likely seems apt for this but still it's not as widespread as it is in BL, I have no issues finding good straight romances. |

| I'm a lesbian and romance is only interesting if I can imagine myself as someone. As long as there is a girl love interest it's interesting, but there's nothing to relate to when it's just men. |
| Even as a bi dude with a slight male preference (who's even gushed over a few male character shippings in my teens), I just find that BL tends to look less inspired and not as varied with the themes, styles, and genres than GL from what I've seen. I guess it could be due to the romance focus of the genre bringing it more into the sphere of slice-of-life than the speculative fiction that typically draws me into a series, combined with the fact that you'd probably find a lot fewer manga creators (and less of an audience even) who are into BL than GL. So for those who do decide to make BL anime/manga, there's probably more pressure to play it safe with a more standardized formula for that audience. As much as I'd love to see some zany Scott Pilgrim-esque black comedy series about kinky gay vampire twinks facing up against a homophobic cabal conspiring to impose a theocracy on them, that could end up being a bit too much even for most BL fans, lol |
