I liked it. Really good and original story. The main character was a dick for the most part though. Other characters weren't very good either. The little twist at the end was great.
The OST was great and so were the art and animation. I had problems with telling if it is a real shoot or computer drawn. Especially the water was very realistic.

Somewhat predictable. There were clues shown during the remaining 1/3 of the show, still it was a beautiful movie. I pity her mom though. I didn't like how Makoto treated her but it's still nice to see that he forgave her.

Predictable plot-twist or not, this movie was beautiful. After the part with this father, the movie was only getting better. Makoto's behaviour in the beginning was only insufferable due to remembering that I was like him. Not even over something that could ruin a family, just minor things. The implied apology to his mom was nice, as we can see he's wearing the jacket she bought him.

This is the best anime drama movie of this century I've seen since Millennium Actress, and no I didn't forget Wolf Children, was a disappointment considering its high score on MAL.

If someone asks me, "what's so great about anime?" 'Colorful" will be one of my replies.

This was good, but there were definite problems with the story's structure & pacing.
I think the story follows a very nontraditional method of storytelling, with things just happening at random instead of following a specific structure with peaks & valleys.
This makes it feel very long and drawn-out, but... it might also make it feel more like real-life, which is what I think the author's intent was.

Still, for me it really affects the quality of the story. Even though I enjoyed the characters, their interactions, the art, the animation, and the concept of the story... the pacing of everything made the overall execution of the plot seem a little lackluster.

Still, all of those other parts are so good... so, I give it an 8/10

You can buy the blu-ray disc on Amazon for about $25. It has English subtitles and switchable Japanese/English audio tracks.
With a film like this, the difference between seeing a compressed online video on a computer monitor and seeing a blu-ray projected on a big screen is worth it. The details you discover on a big screen are like nuggets of gold here and there. There is so much to take in.

Life is full of colors. Jesus, it's literally nothing. It's such a dull movie. Sub plots that basically go nowhere and weren't even interesting in the first place, tedium in its depiction of school life, home life (oh, man, the brother's ignoring MC for half of the movie but he really does care, bravo, MC is bitching out his mom once again) and the bonding between the two fucks (I wanna go to school with mah friend!, hey, we're both kind of dumb, trains).

Nice movie overall. I really liked the first-person perspective at the beginning.

Makoto irritated me to no end, particularly the way he treated his family and Sano.
However, his actions (towards his family) did have reasons behind them, and they were necessary for his character to develop.

This is one of those movies that I connect with, base on my philosophy of life, my history of depression and my personality.

Only thing I didn't like was the dubbing of the main character (Yes English Dubbed version is pretty damn bad because of that...).

But regardless this is still a 10/10 for me. It touched my soul O.O

wonderful! loved the twist at the end. i found purapura almost dislikable in the beginning but not later on.

i felt the same anger and disgust mokoto had when he found out about his mother. that look he gave her before he left the room was totally how i'd look at her. i've never had such an experience (thankfully) in my life, but i definitely know how it feels thanks to this movie.

another tale of how one shouldn't give in and keep living ahaha how many times has that been done in anime. this was a great way to say it though.

easily a 10. couldn't find one boring moment. now if only the book was translated...

The music is so fitting. The "twist" was obvious but that's not the point of the story, now. Beautiful movie.
I just felt bad for his dad, but I understand that things get hard sometimes, and it's difficult to get a hold of your emotions when you mostly feel irritated and sad. I think Colorful portrayed very well the anger that one feels at times, reasonably and normally or not. 9/10

First quarter was slow, but glad I continued watching because this was a beautiful and emotional movie, along with a great wonderful didactic message.

Great soundtrack and artwork too! Cherish your life and treasure your loved ones, and life doesn't end!

Probably one of the best anime films I've seen next to Millennium Actress, Tekkon Kinkreet, and lastly Wolf Children.

I didn't like the art design, it could be much better. Considering Makoto's dull life and all, a much more likeable design would help. But still, it kept me watching till the end. The message was deep and beautiful and I was surprised in the end. Really nice movie.

TBH I didn't think I'd be that upset from the movie, but the dinner table scene at the end got to me..Also his flashback, I can't believe ppl use to poke his back till he started to fucking bleed!! And no one did anything about it
I'm just a little confused..I finished watching it tday but the only thing I dont understand is, is the soul rlly Makoto. And if yes then why did he say 'If it were really me, I'd be ashamed'

At first, i thought pura pura would have been Makoto..guess I was wrong. I feel sorry for him

It's really Makoto. But when he first came back to the world of the living, he had no idea whom he was. Imagine you're suddenly reborn in a person you have no recollection of. Would you act as careful as if it were your own person? Possibly not. He really didn't want to be reborn. He was disgusted and the more he found out about Hiroka and his mom, the more angry he became. It took him months to work that all out and reach a point of acceptance when he realized whom he really was.

My favorite character would be Makoto's brother: Mitsuru. For me, he was the real hidden guardian angel. Makoto was such an ass at times but it's better than being bullied, falling into depression and committing suicide. I gave it a 7/10 mainly for the side characters. I believe they were more important in the story than Makoto. The revelation at the end of him
wasn't that shocking or anything tbh.

I found it fucking weird that the mother was sobbing during dinner and no one asked her what was wrong. I think what she did was horrible and in my case, it would be extremely hard to forgive her but I would eventually, because sorry to say this, they're just my parents and I can't force them to be together if they no longer have feelings for each other. If I were any of the kids, after I graduate from college, they can live their life and I'll live mine. I would love them equally whether or not they're still together. That's just life. The father deserves a better wife but I commend the mother for doing her best to make amends. Cheating is different for everyone. For some it isn't a big deal, for others, it's the end of the world.

In short, I hate the first half until Makoto and Satoru went to that train station journey, from that point the things went so smoothly.

Honestly I really thought until the end that it was a different person inside Makoto's body, no be makoto self, which is nice touch to the whole movie.

Guys remember, if u dead, u can't watch anymore anime, so stay alive to keep watching anime~ (or be alive enough time to read the last chapter of Berserk xD)

This was a masterpiece. I think I will never find a better character than Makoto to relate with. The dinner scene was brilliantly pulled off and so was the rooftop scene. Each character had an influence over Makoto's views on the world, especially Saotome - he's the best bro we all need in our lives.

As for the predictable twists and character personalities, I can overlook them. What it did brilliantly was how it handled these cliched characters and their interactions.

10/10

I have heard Millennium Actress is very similar to this, if not better. I can't wait to watch it tomorrow.

EDIT: So after comparing this with Millennium Actress, I sadly have to lower the score. This was movie was amazing, no doubt, but when I look at how captivating the narration was in the former, I wonder just what was missing from this movie that didn't captivate me much? It was then when it struck me that this movie was pretty out of sync with its storytelling. The dinner scene and rooftop scene hit me the hardest, however, everything else before and after it was something like a "filler". I think the story could have been more captivating if it had cut some corners for scenes which didn't matter much.

So yeah, I am going to review my score: 8/10 The characters were still good but the narration was pretty weak.

Phew, this is the first time that I am doing something like this and I hope I am not the only one here who does this.

Okay, I've gotta admit...this movie threw me for a loop.

I didn't understand why this stranger who was filling in for a teenage boy had all this angst about the boy's mother's affair, and it bothered me to see him treat her badly.

When things started to get resolved with the family and Makoto seemed happy at the end, my first thought was "Okay, that's nice...too bad this guy won't actually get to live out as Makoto. Whoever the real Makoto is could easily screw all this up once they come back. This movie would have a lot more feeling to it if it was just Makoto dealing with these emotions, instead of this lost soul who-"

My feelings quickly changed when the sin was revealed, and it turned out that Makoto was indeed...well, Makoto.

I'm still going to complain that Purapura was a shitty, obnoxious guide...I understand he kind of had to be vague and let Makoto discover some things on his own, but at the same time, he sort of just let him loose and then scolded him at random times for trying to figure out what the hell to do. I'd be happy to lose the memories of the little bastard. Botan from Yu Yu Hakusho is a much better guide for the dead. She's also sexy as hell, so she's got that going for her over this kid.

That was a beautiful movie.. I enjoyed the music and artwork!! It reminds me of what is truly important in this one life that we have. Nobody, not even those we truly respect and admire is perfect. Everyone has beautiful and ugly colors and that's normal.. We should learn to forgive those that are important to us and focus on our present.

Great movie and had a great lesson to appreciate especially those who are suicidal. I never thought that was really Makoto's soul, that was a good twist i guess he was him all along and Purapura wanted him to change his life and choose to live. But we cant forget his first friend Saotome he played a major role in changing his approach on life, ITS ANIME LIKE THESE THAT I KEEP COMING FOR MORE.
