I have a question for manga readers. Is the big payoff the one where
or is it something different. I just wanna know if I have something to look forward to (that i don't know).

Yes that's one of it but we will also have few more climaxes coming after that no worries

Saw this on weibo... i think this depicts Mappa situations well enough...

(Translations)

Only 2 episodes out....

Mappa use CGI
Fans : why you cut corners? you lazy people, at least try hand draw the titans, i want 2D sakuga fight scenes

Mappa use Rotoscope (need lots of sakuga work here & yes it's 2D & handrawn)
Fans: why use rotoscope?? this is weird and unfit, why do unnecessary stuff when you are not even good at it

Mappa work to give movie quality of animation
Fans : this is a freaking anime, why you make it like real movie?? it feels different now!! should have stick to anime way of production...you totally ruined it

Mappa use the same scriptwriter as previous seasons in pacing control
Fans : why you cut off scenes???? the pacing is so bad so rush now, i see no character build ups....WIT done it so much better

Mappa has Isayama, the author to supervise the adaptation
Fans: why you add those original scenes? should have follow the manga faithfully, you ruined aot series

I think AOT fandom has began to be even more toxic than MHA fandom. Im 100% sure that even they animated every frame, make every scene with amazing choreography, pefectly set OSTs the fans will never accept that MAPPA gave their 110% of Hard work to satisfy us. If some miracle didn't happen i don't fucking know how that ungrateful & stupid fandom would stop whining. Gosh half of the fandom are already looking forward for the next episodes and likes the animation, but the other half will never be satisfied. In this fandom is like Civil War.

It was used properly IMO.

look at this, this would be a great background if the blur didn't erase every detail in the picture

Thoughts after the rewatch.

The cinematography on display is only match by Araki in S1, the angles and camera movements they used are great, the dinner scene was the highlight for me.

Some parts of the animation need more work like the Udo scene in the pier, but otherwise I was not expecting such a good animation quality, I was really thinking they were gonna do what Wit did on S1 in Ep3 which was the first dialogue only episode of the season, and you can tell they treated it with less care than the action ones, which makes sense, you need to prioritize action

I hope this means the production will be more consistent, for this final season, and not that the season is very front loaded, I doubt the latter because we have info from animators that later eps will get special treatment as they should, But I hope there is not that one odd episode who will get shafted down the line.

As for adaptation, Seko does not disappoints, he kept and trimmed what was necessary, lets hope he can keep this pace for all 16 eps since he doesn't have much room to breath.

I actually agreed with you that the rotoscope has some flaws in it, and yes perhaps the staffs could have added more cuts there but the work for rotoscope is really heavy if i m not mistaken.. it's hard to ask them to get to the perfect work like chika's dance animation in such a tight schedule...
anyways my post just a sarcastic reflection of fans objecting everything mappa is trying to do here...i am not against people giving criticisms to the work
the thing with mappa using rotoscope, is on the argument of 'if you are not perfect at something you shouldn't try it at all?' I'm using 'perfect' instead of 'good' because mappa certainly has surpassed the level of 'good' here even with that flawed rotoscope scenes of Udo and Gabi acting
Me too indeed find it weird at my first watch of Udo acting scene.. it's almost like he is exaggerating in motions and the acting style is similar to a theatre play yet his face lack the expressions transitions...
but when i rewatch it i find it more interesting as I have never seen so much motions and dynamics in a mere dialogue scene for an anime except for studio ghibli movies loolll...so I assume it's a creative choice by the staffs to approach a movie-like cinematography here though is not done perfectly & I appreciate their choice & efforts put in this...
In fact, I think the staffs are being ambitious here....it's like they are telling the audience they will be doing something very different in this season so i am really looking forward to see more creative use of animation technique in the future episodes and overall it doesn't affect my viewing experience that much so it's refreshing to see this new style of work here
Anyways this is just my take, i totally agreed with you on the lacks they are having in the rotoscope but I am still down for them trying this technique in the show to give a different feels in animation :D

About the filter...my idea is this scene comes from Reiner's POV i think, there's a sunset in front, i assume the camera is focus on the lighting & colour of the sunset reflected on sea (you can see the texture of the sea very well) and the blur used on characters actually added emotional feels here...it's almost like reiner watching Gabi gang with teary eyes and i think this fits well with the scene and emotions here

the content of the complaints are pretty similar to what we saw here on MAL basically about pacing, WIT is better, filter, CGI, character designs, manga reader unhappy, bad rotoscope in character acting and tons of requests asking the staff to change this and that scene in BD...telling him what should be added here and there , what could have been done better etc. etc. 🙄

of course there are many positive & supportive comments and fans are defending the staff too, so it's like a long thread of argument lol but not as bad as mal forum cause most of the negative comments are trolls so they don't reply after leaving their comments

No,i really have three main complaints.if these were gone i'd enjoy the mappa verison of AOT

1.no CGI ttians
2.no blur at all,i could accept it in the first episode as "dusty arena" kind of thing but as we know and as we have seen it will be in every episode. diminshing the background/character details and just making it foggy mess
3.no rotoscoping, but this seems it would be for this episode only so i don't mind it that much

looking back at it,PV was indeed much better. and i (along with many) was only complaining about slight blur back then(and debating about color palette iguess).with many people agreeing on it and saying hayashi would rein her on. Now i don't mind the new color palete as much as i think it fits the season storyline, but bigger things have surfaced and blur has only gotten stronger in some scenes.

It was jarring seeing them move in slow motion,it made you think of bad animation anime (and yes i know its not badly animated), i prefer a still detailed shot like reiner ones over rotoscoping. it just made it difficult to concentrate, espeically when zeke was moving in the roof scene. i appericate them trying to make it better. but if something works they shouldn't try to reinvent the wheel... esepically when the effort could be used to a LOT of other stuff needing work. i just see it as waste of effort and time

i didn't feel like it was realistic or if i was in theater at all,it doesn't really work with anime in my opinion. its like placing real life people in anime or 2D characters in real life. it just looks jarring and it doesn't work because both are extremely different mediums.

Yeah i think the only explanation for that much blur there is as if we're seeing it frm reiner teary eyes lol,but the filter is applied on a lot of scenes/the entire of episodes. so i don't think you can headcanon it like this always. I think mappa animators are doing good work with the backgrounds and character details and to see it just erased of details by this awful film grain/blur filter is just sad.

unfortunately i don't see your complaints will be resolved, it's almost confirmed nine titans will be CGI this entire season, blur effects is the signature use of the photographer tho I don't see that as a problem if it is put in the right scene...rotoscope only in this episode? i doubt so, in case you didn't know mappa seems to like creativity and innovation use of animation which is very different from WIT, staff describe WIT as steady and traditional but Mappa is chaotic and adaptive in their working styles and so far the difference reflects well in the work they had done, mappa is constantly experimenting & trying out new things while WIT work things out steadily at safe bet , i wouldn't wanna discuss who's better here whatnot because to me there are just DIFFERENT..just so you know this season wont be what you expect if you are hoping to see similar visuals like WIT work,it's a pity you couldn't enjoy this final season...hope you found some other shows that suit your taste...have a good holiday.

I think the blur is reduced this epi. Still its not completely gone. It is still heavily used in some areas. This episode felt chill. Its funny how people were talking about blurring the entire thing because of the ' Dark tone' of this season. This was the most casual AOT watch I ever had.
Subjectivity is a joke on MAL. If you implicitly bring in subjectivity in your counter argument, you've already lost the debate. Also this website is a fankid infestation , have pity on those kids by ignoring there quotes as they have absolutely no clue what exactly is going on.

Yes i know its confirmed, but im still holding hope somewhat for 2D titan scenes.espeically in critical episodes.

yes i don't like Mappa style of animation in AOT,i hate their overrealiance in CGI to cheapen the costs.so im traditional anime fan i guess.

i know it will be different,im rereading the specfic chapters and seeing past discussions on it on reddit. the manga is actually good even though i dislike reading mangas over anime. but as i said i'll wait until EP 5-6 then if the fights/hype moments are awful i'll go fully into the manga and treat the anime as mere "extra" instead of the main thing.

Though i dont agree with some of your points here but I understand your choice, yup totally check out the manga if you are dropping the anime anyways, the manga has a different experience, isayama-sensei has very strong story board work, the manga panels are impactful visually with great drawings and I am sure you wont regret reading it when you reach the final arc of the manga, hope you enjoy the reading :)

Im trying to adapt,i actually thought this episode was great aside from the movement and blur in some parts
. but i think some part is unable to because im not well acquainted with this new cast. so as i said i will give it more episodes to conclude since the PV is not enough (looking at the PV now is hype)

CGI is expensive if used once, but is very cheap if used for an anime season.it would let you keep much more of the profits.

Rotoscoping in the other hand if i remember correctly is more expensive.

Subjectivity is a joke on MAL. If you implicitly bring in subjectivity in your counter argument, you've already lost the debate. Also this website is a fankid infestation , have pity on those kids by ignoring there quotes as they have absolutely no clue what exactly is going on.

Guys im really worried about the pacing.
One episode isn't sufficient at all to adapt all reiner's flashback, especially when leakers are saying declaration of war will happen in ep5.

Don't worry, WIT adapted all of the Grisha flashbacks in one episode and those were two heavy dialogue flashback chapters.

One episode is more than enough, hence why the rearrangement in the first place. They rearrange the scenes to make next episode a all flashback episode.

Next episode will adapt the rest of chapter 94 which is about 16 pages, all of chapter 95 which is 45 pages and 5 pages of chapter 97, with probably a little anime only scene.

With the grand total of 66 pages being adapted, they may cut or shorten a few of the dialogues but nothing big should be cut.

For reference Wit studio snk season 3 part 2 episode 8 adapted "that day" and "Borderline" both chapter 87 & 88, 45 pages for each chapter with a grand total of 90 pages!

And wit cut out a little of the dialogue but nothing major was cut, btw its the same script writer from previous seasons s1 - to present, so its not like this person is new to all this and therefore we should not be worried as I pointed out to to others this is one thing that would not change if Wit studio was still the one animating snk as it we would be getting the said pacing.

Hey, personally I really didn't like "That Day". The previous episode "The Basement" was really slow and emotional and then this episode was just a big info dump with no pauses to let the info about Ymir Fritz sink in. This was supposed to be the most important episode in aot but just felt weightless.

Well the point is, next week episode will not adapt the same amount of pages as that one, so the pacing overall will be better, they may even have room to add anime original scenes.

Yes, episode will definitely end at chapter 98. Just keep in mind that not every single dialogue will be there, they will do some cut and simple make it to the point. Just like in this episode where.

Its best you have in your mind that somethings or dialogue will be cut.

This is exactly what I thought during the rotoscoped scenes and Hollywood inspired camera movements tbh. I wasn't expecting them to do experimental and unorthodox stuff, for anime standards of course.

I think you're a little off there. There actually might be pacing issues next episode. Looking at the manga, Reiner's flashback is about half of 94, half of 95, the entirety of 96, and half of 97. Now if they didn't adapt any of 97, then it would be fine. But the preview for next episode already showed scenes from chapter 97. So I'm not sure how they're gonna handle that.

Yeah you are right the rest of 95 needs to be adapted too, but in the end it will be the same amount of content as season 3 part 2 episode 8 and as I said not everything will be there, they will cut some parts.

i would agree in the first two, instead of rotoscoping they could have added some of the cut scenes, and it wouldn't be jarring

About the filter...my idea is this scene comes from Reiner's POV i think, there's a sunset in front, i assume the camera is focus on the lighting & colour of the sunset reflected on sea (you can see the texture of the sea very well) and the blur used on characters actually added emotional feels here...it's almost like reiner watching Gabi gang with teary eyes and i think this fits well with the scene and emotions here
Attack on Titan season 4 : when a great adaptation meets an ungrateful fandom. this pretty much sums it up. also i didnt really feel the udo scene was as jarring as people make it up to be like the only really weird looking part was when he spoke to zofia. the rest of it looked pretty neat. also the gabi rotoscoping was great imo. the only really complaint is zeke and colt walking up the stairs. its just that it feels new to aot. and people arent able to digest soemthing new and different in which case they'd be beyond help of enjoying this season cause i personally loved this episode being a manga reader, it was done fantastically well. also im not pointing towards u when i say ungrateful fandom im just mentioning it as a general to most of the people u know saying its a bad adaptation, and god knows how much more shitty and toxic they can get. i mean if they complain in the next 2 episodes itll be clear they are going out of their way to bitch about it.

its funny how people are worrying just because the studio changed without even knowing its the same script writer or screen writer idk. Also the concern about bad animation should be out of question like, im repeating this so many times this season is just unlucky. the people receiving it are, idk trolling it for like no reason at all. also again the rotoscoping isnt bad nor were frames missing in the udo and gabi scene. its just that we are not used to such neat shifts in aot. the only part where it was truly not good enough was the zzeke scene. either that or they were watching it in 720 or idk 480p

I think mappa animators are doing good work with the backgrounds and character details and to see it just erased of details by this awful film grain/blur filter is just sad.

unfortunately i don't see your complaints will be resolved, it's almost confirmed nine titans will be CGI this entire season, blur effects is the signature use of the photographer tho I don't see that as a problem if it is put in the right scene...rotoscope only in this episode? i doubt so, in case you didn't know mappa seems to like creativity and innovation use of animation which is very different from WIT, staff describe WIT as steady and traditional but Mappa is chaotic and adaptive in their working styles and so far the difference reflects well in the work they had done, mappa is constantly experimenting & trying out new things while WIT work things out steadily at safe bet , i wouldn't wanna discuss who's better here whatnot because to me there are just DIFFERENT..just so you know this season wont be what you expect if you are hoping to see similar visuals like WIT work,it's a pity you couldn't enjoy this final season...hope you found some other shows that suit your taste...have a good holiday.
the rotoscoping is good. except zeke scene like 1 shot maybe. its just that it feels new to aot. and people arent able to digest soemthing new and different in which case they'd be beyond help of enjoying this season cause i personally loved this episode being a manga reader, it was done fantastically well. but i think u should give up your hope about people in mal changing their way of thinking. cause when i give them a suitable reply they dissappear and start another thread and keep complaining

the content of the complaints are pretty similar to what we saw here on MAL basically about pacing, WIT is better, filter, CGI, character designs, manga reader unhappy, bad rotoscope in character acting and tons of requests asking the staff to change this and that scene in BD...telling him what should be added here and there , what could have been done better etc. etc. 🙄

of course there are many positive & supportive comments and fans are defending the staff too, so it's like a long thread of argument lol but not as bad as mal forum cause most of the negative comments are trolls so they don't reply after leaving their comments
