Very emotional episode with a lot of feelings. Tbh, it is so sad!
and the fact that:

I really enjoyed this episode though I felt like they really milked it towards the end. The Subaru/Mom dialogue for ~7 minutes towards the end of the episode really wasn't necessary but everything else was fine. Kind of disappointed they focused so much on backstory and character here since I don't think that fits really well with the rest of Re:Zero but they did it in a respectable way and it got some tears out of me (lol).

Honestly starting from this season it becomes pretty much a series standart to do focus on characters like this from time to time, season 1 only really did this for Rem in her flashback so it wasnt as noticeable.

Good episode. Not great, but good. I would rather them actually continue the story. I feel like I barely know what is happening anymore..Suddenly they cut out with an episode like this. I mean Subaru was transported to another world, met Emilia and some other stuff he wants to protect, Emilia is a princess candidate or whatever, Subaru is also cursed and can return from death, and they are also dealing with the witch's cult for whatever reason..and now what?? I feel like this wasn't necessary, he was motivated enough in the story to continue as it is and didn't need to confront his past. So as long as they return safely from the sanctuary everything will come back to "normal"..

That was fantastic. I'm glad we got to see the reason he was a shut-in and how he was able to finally face his past. Great episode.

There are
1. People who watch Re:Zero mainly for the torture porn
2. People who watch Re:Zero mainly for waifus

And then there's people like me sitting in a lonely corner watching it for the story dynamics and character exploration. Really good episode, the fact that White Fox extended it to 30 minutes gives me hopes for the future. Animation is still considerably drab. I liked the fact they didn't overdramatize this episode by obvious feels music and incessant sobbing. Did hit my heart tho, when it gave us huge hints about Subaru 's nature as a person. That dad is a chad. And now, a greedy schoolgirl wants to talk~

The ED truly seems to point out something... I like the song already.

Came home from a sick workout and felt full of testo, 30 min later I was legit in tears.

This episode, this fucking episode. Started off really fun with the introduction of Subaru's parents, there wasn't a lot of time for that, but I immediately took a liking to them. The crazy tough-love dad, who reminded me somewhat of Garp and the cute weirdo mom. That was one hilarious breakfast, but then came the confrontation. One of the big strenghts of this series are the dialogue heavy parts with emphasis on Subaru putting his feelings into words and this part lived up to the infamous episode 18. I could resonate well or symphatize with a lot that was mentioned and the soundtrack, uff I swear, they put onion essence in it.

5/5

I liked shield hero (it is nowhere near the quality of re: zero). The show I would say is pretty bad when it comes to characters (mainly antagonists) who are just made to be hated and awful people. Naofumi as a protagonist is what made me like it along with quite interestingly showed magic system... apart from this there is not much. Re zero has everything... except maybe animation but that is the least important thing.

This was an absolutely incredible episode in my opinion, finally seeing Subaru's backstory and just how much he's developed as a person was very touching. I feel like his story is very relatable to a lot of people (I know it was relatable to me at least) and the emotions hit me like truck-kun.

Most anime with hikikomori just show them being there, without much reason. I love how this show actually gave a believable, relatable reason for why Subaru is the way he is, instead o just having him be a hikikomori and that's it. This episode gave a lot more depth to Subaru's character and made me love him even more.

And of course the ending scene with Echidna was incredibly tense and caught me off-guard, despite me thinking something bad was gonna happen (this is too upbeat for a show like Re:Zero).

Overall easily a 5/5 episode and I can't wait for the rest of the season!

Also, before he remembered he was living in his past, how did he know the pain would stop at 8:00? What's up with that? Did he have some sort of condition? Anxiety attacks?

Anxiety attacks, you’ve never felt that? That was very relatable to me. The feeling of wanting to go and do something but you just can’t. You’re shackled by an invisible force (anxiety) but once the clock strikes past the time. You’re set free because it’s simply to late to even go now. You felt a sudden rush of relief but also guilt.

Yeah, I used to have those a lot, it’s gotten better, but I still get them from time to time. Happened a lot when I had to do homework, I procrastinated till the last second, had a panic attack when it was almost the deadline, then when the deadline passed I felt relieved but then I realize I just missed an assignment. But it didn’t matter as much as stopping the panic. So I definitely see the similarities.

I wasn’t sure if it was plain old anxiety attacks Subaru was having because it looked like Return by Death in animation and sound effects. To me, it looked more like Satella helping him out with his trial by trying to remind him about her world.

This is the story of how Subara really ended up in the Isekai Quartet School.

All kidding aside, the episode really stretched things out and while it was good, it also felt repetitive. The episode didn't need the extra few minutes of runtime. At least we got to see into the "past" of Subaru and the relationship with his parents.

It's like the author remembered at the end, oh right his mom exists too better have a convo with her too cause all I've talked about with his parents is how awesome his dad is.

Well, this was kind of emotional, even if I did think it was a little cheesy with the abundance of crying, and the dialogue being hammier than usual, and the first 10 minutes being a waste of time (particularly the peas joke) My question is: why didn't we get this episode much earlier?

Why wasn't Subaru's backstory shown in the 1st episode? The 1st episode could've gone over Subaru's life, showing it in extensive detail, rather than just jumping into the edginess. Season 1 of Re: Zero was 25 episodes; it could've easily spared 1 episode to focus on the protagonist's backstory. And then, between episodes 2-18, Subaru could be forced to confront his past and come to terms with it. It would've been perfect!

Even though this episode finally explains why Subaru's so damn annoying, I still don't really like him much more than before.
I find it very ironic know how Re: Zero fans were saying the 1st scene in episode 1 season 1 was so "deep," the scene in the grocery store, where the subtext was implying that Subaru did not get along with his parents, his mom didn't cook for him, his life sucked, but...it turns out to all be the opposite: he gets along great with his family, so his mom obviously cooks for him.

I found it incredibly corny that Rem came out and said Subaru was her "hero" and whatnot, as though Subaru actually risks his life. As annoying as Subaru is, he's a good person like most people. So of course, when he has the power to come back to life after dying, he's going to continue dying to save other people who are near him, just like anyone would.

Subaru is a confusing character to me: because he's supposed to obviously represent trashy otakus, yet...he's the ideal trashy otaku: he's ridiculously good looking, he's fit as fuck.

Normally I don't like episodes that are so conversation heavy. I'm more of a show don't tell kind of guy. But considering he hasn't seen his parents in so long and might not see them again, this was a well done episode. Subaru has matured in the other world it seems.

I knew a big twist was coming at the end.

I was fine with the whole episode being talking. My problem was with how hammy and forced the dialogue was. Like that one dialogue where his mom or dad said something about Subaru, "Being a hard worker who got things done minimally" or something.

Re:Zero has a knack of following a rather unique way of storytelling (in a very nonlinear manner), which makes the show better on subsequent re-watches or when viewed in retrospect. Makes it worthwhile to analyze certain character actions AFTER knowing more about them (this will apply to Emilia also later on in this season).

Infact that's the whole reason why a lot of the mysteries aren't revealed yet, and there's no "Info dump" sessions where characters directly reveal a lot of stuff.

And presenting it in form of "Tomb/Graveyard's Trial" to face your own past was a creative idea in my opinion.

Some people like this way of storytelling and some people don't. Just a matter of subjective taste.

Well, getting isekai-d was his dream. He falls into this category of people who strongly believed in otaku "wish fulfilment" & escapist tropes of fantasy/isekai settings.

But yeah, he thinks a lot about them. Anime doesn't have a narrator so his inner monologues are not voiced. Moreover, he usually tries to act strong (because of his prideful nature and him trying to imitate his father) so he doesn't directly show his "homesickness". In the Novels its lot more obvious and clear than the anime due to his inner monologues.

That's why I said I am lonely. Re:Zero is the first isekai I watched, and then I was just recommended; had no idea of the plot or storyline. I had no connection with this website, or any other anime database then.

Also maybe others in the third category started like that, but I am talking about what they wanted to see more of after their initial interests. Bruh...

Not sure how I feel about this episode, it seemed like the point of it was to redeem Subaru. All this time I thought he was just your average loser NEET but now, no he had great supportive parents who let him be a NEET...uhm. Huh? I didn't really feel emotionally involved with the parents either, because that wasn't real right? That's just how Subaru imagined his parents not his actual parents right? I thought he was kind of an outcast because of his Sanpakugan (like most anime MC's with that trait) but this made it into him being cool like his dad but just something that prevented him from being as cool as him but OK because he got it from his mom (do women with Sanpakugan not face the same prejudices?). Ehh seems pretty contrived to me. Well at least Echidna was there at the end, still waiting for her to be evil.

Its sort of a thing with the author where he likes to introduce a character s personality and mindset before laying out their backstory, give the whole ´´ahah´´ moment as to why they acted in a certain way at one point in the story, while knowing this would make you understand him better during season 1 it would also make you attempt to excuse his behaviour in the royal selection scene which the author did not want the viewer to give Subaru a pass for (one of the lines specifically calling out Julius s title of knight as something passed up by his daddy or something like that where he was projecting his own issues.) while lots of people excuse Subaru s behaviour currently due to either liking the fact he was flawed in season 1 or already knowing ahead why he acted that way its easy for the latter case to forget that the author never intended to have you support or sympathise with the guy at that point as he made his slow recovery from it into ´´Hero mode´´ in season 1.

Best episode so far.

Not gonna lie I teared up on multiple scenes. It goes to show that you don't need a tragic death or revenge to make a back story good. Sometimes it could be the everyday feeling we have as human that makes good character development. Subaru past was hard for him. Only he can understand not living up to his dad. Not truly being your own person. In the end he gave up on himself while his parents always had faith in him. It's sad that we will never get to them that back in the real world. I had already like Subaru towards the second half of the first season, but this made me like him even more. Also I love how he has his mother eyes.

He past the first trial and best girl (as of right now) Echidna is waiting on him. Can't wait to see what's next. Also finally got the ED.

5/5

It was pretty much about Subaru admitting his inferiority complex and embracing his father. It was to understand where his prideful nature comes from. He wants to live up to his father's (and everyone around him) expectations and wanted to become someone like his father (liked by people around). A lot of his actions in season 1 become lot more meaningful after knowing more about him from this Trial.

Echidna is a two-faced character (check the last shot of the ED). She won't behave "evil" like Petelgeuse or Elsa from season 1 and start violence or crazy behavior etc, but she's evil in her own different (calm) way.

Don't get me wrong, I like the show xP I guess I'd have liked LN subaru more than anime subaru, but only in the beginning of the show. Now I just feel bad for all that he's been going through lmao

You quoted the wrong person. I did not say any of the things that were quoted above.

The author could've done both in the same episode: in Naruto, in the opening scene, were see Naruto act like a troubling brat. Then later on in the episode, we get his backstory that shows why he behaves that way.

North25 said:
while knowing this would make you understand him better during season 1 it would also make you attempt to excuse his behaviour in the royal selection scene which the author did not want the viewer to give Subaru a pass for (one of the lines specifically calling out Julius s title of knight as something passed up by his daddy or something like that where he was projecting his own issues.) while lots of people excuse Subaru s behaviour currently due to either liking the fact he was flawed in season 1 or already knowing ahead why he acted that way its easy for the latter case to forget that the author never intended to have you support or sympathise with the guy at that point as he made his slow recovery from it into ´´Hero mode´´ in season 1.

Subaru was already a hero; he was already saving peoples' lives before that scene.
I don't think people would excuse his behavior, but they would understand why he behaved that way in that scene. It's common in anime: for example, Naruto's outlandish behavior in the beginning episodes, no one excused it; but we understood why he behaved that way.

Re:Zero has a knack of following a rather unique way of storytelling (in a very nonlinear manner),

What is unique about Re: Zero's storytelling? It's very linear; events happen chronologically.

rakp333 said:
which makes the show better on subsequent re-watches or when viewed in retrospect. Makes it worthwhile to analyze certain character actions AFTER knowing more about them (this will apply to Emilia also later on in this season).

As a result though, many people did not care about the characters on the first viewing; there's a reason why so many people like me don't care about Emilia and Subaru; because Emilia has so little screentime in season 1, and Subaru is still obnoxious.
Fans of Re: Zero praise this show as being "psychological." Well, if this is a psychological anime, shouldn't the priority of it be to get into the main characters' heads? To understand why they're behaving the way they are? Rather than just dumping all that info in more than a season later?

rakp333 said:
Infact that's the whole reason why a lot of the mysteries aren't revealed yet, and there's no "Info dump" sessions where characters directly reveal a lot of stuff.

But...this whole episode was an info dump.

rakp333 said:
And presenting it in form of "Tomb/Graveyard's Trial" to face your own past was a creative idea in my opinion.

I can't recall any exact examples, but I know I've seen this magical, "confront your past" thing done in other stories.

rakp333 said:
Some people like this way of storytelling and some people don't. Just a matter of subjective taste.

This way of storytelling has led to a lot of criticism of Re: Zero.

rakp333 said:

Well, getting isekai-d was his dream. He falls into this category of people who strongly believed in otaku "wish fulfilment" & escapist tropes of fantasy/isekai settings.

If a complete stranger appeared by my door step, gave me a PS5, I would be glad for the PS5, but I'd also be deeply disturbed and confused. I don't need to have taken 2 years of psychology classes to understand the basic idea that as humans, we question things that happen spontaneously.

rakp333 said:
But yeah, he thinks a lot about them. Anime doesn't have a narrator so his inner monologues are not voiced. Moreover, he usually tries to act strong (because of his prideful nature and him trying to imitate his father) so he doesn't directly show his "homesickness". In the Novels its lot more obvious and clear than the anime due to his inner monologues.

The anime never showed Subaru missing his parents. The light novels did. I feel like you're projecting what the light novel did, onto the anime, which the anime never did. The anime could've had a few small inner monologues, or flashbacks, to his parents or something. Anime like Oregairu have characters have inner monologues, and the Monogatari series.

Well at least Echidna was there at the end, still waiting for her to be evil.

so... getting into next episode if you want more context:

Kinda crazy how Echidna knows he's from a different world now, I wonder or more like hope that there were others from a different world... I guess only Echidna would know that, or possibly the witches too, given her vast knowledge

Re:Zero's underlying themes are to criticise the wish-fulfilment & escapist tropes of generic fantasy/isekai settings. So the anime tried harder to make Subaru unlikable and show the adverse affects of behaving like "I'm the MC of this world now, I can get chicks, and get away by doing anything" by severely punishing him for mistakes. The novels do the similar, but Subaru is somewhat more relatable there due to his inner monologues and the author's narration of the incident.

And well, if you see his room is literally filled with sliver-hair figurines and posters, which pretty much implies that Emilia happened to be someone who fit well into his ideal image for a heroine when he got isekai-d. So he gets obsesses over her, starts idealizing her, objectifying her, and treating her as a "waifu"(the way a lot of weebs actually do), instead of seeing her as an actual person, by not being considerate of her feelings. His character Arc in 2nd half of the Season 1 was pretty much him realizing his own flaws, and later apologising to Emilia (ep25 confession), and loving her as a normal girl (and not like an objectified "waifu").

Overall, the anime was a somewhat more harsh on Subaru's character, because they tried to be more strict on the "criticism" aspect of the show.

while that s true its a common pattern with the author that he doesnt really like to excuse past mistakes, as for him being a hero its true he was indeed helping around from early on, i just meant him getting back his groove again during season 1 s second half considering he started spirraling down into eventually trying to take the easy way out again and run off with Rem leaving everyone to die (even if it was a more hopeless situation than anxiety and others expectations driving him away from school) You can understand him now and it makes a season 1 rewatch alot more entertaining with the context this brings,it would be fine to explain it there but it would also bring out a different reaction than the one that he wanted to give to Subaru as he grew into a better person and now with context got over a few of his past issues.

Really liked the Episode

I think a lot of people can relate to that weird time in their childhood, when they first go to school and learn that just cause they've been "The best" for Mom and Dad doesn't make them special in the real world.

Really reminded me of the great moments everybody thinks of, when you mention the first Season.

I'm sure Subaru will get a lot of stick, as a maincharacter, again - for tearing up multiple times in this Episode alone, but I kinda like that self-reflecting, realism about his character a lot.

Also..... what an awesome Dad this guy has :D loved him!

I don't like people who want to change critical parts of the story without caring how it could affect wildly other aspects or future arcs.

Well, i always repeat that if you are basing all your argument in a discussion about what you know from advanced stages of the story by reading the novels, so you should discuss it in the Novel forum.

But since im not right either in discuss what is in begining of next episode, so i will wait for the next topic, next week.

Btw, until this point, what Tappei is doing with Subaru about his lack of interest about his own Isekai situation, is odd, and any critic anime viewer can perceive this, even if, of course, it is lesser flaw.

Echidna as high school girl : god blessed my eyes

This episode was extremely different but very beautiful on the other hand. Not gonna lie, I didn't properly enjoy those 30 minutes : however, I recognize this episode carried some very strong & powerful feelings as well as a page of "Subaru's past".

Well, it has been hinted a lot of times in Season 1. Let me point out:-
1. Episode 12: A masked guy (Priscilla's knight) casually starts chatting about Japanese Kansai dialect with Subaru, in a fictional world of Lugunica (how does he know that? haha )
2. Episode 16: Availability of fast food & burgers in that restaurant, while Re:Zero is actually set in a medieval era.
3. Episode 19: Japanese names inscribed on the big Flugel tree.

and there have been few more hints here and there. The novel has lot more information on this.

I really appreciate that Tappei Natsuki chose to give Subaru supportive parents. Too often fiction takes the reductive approach of having the problems of the children be a result of the sins of the parents. Certainly that can happen, but we need to remember that everyone is an individual making their own choices. People with great parents will make mistakes. Mental illness strikes without respect for the quality of family life. This isn't to say that there is no point to good parenting, as there clearly is, just that good parenting isn't a panacea for the ills of the world. Here's to hoping Subaru reunites with his parents in real life someday (hopefully bringing a beautiful girl along to meet them.)
Every day you can read a book or watch some anime is a good day!

At first I didn't like the idea of "wasting" time on real world. But damn, that was good. Maybe because his parents reminded mine a lot, now I really hope they get happy end lol.
And, like a cherry on top of this perfect episode, Echidna in the last scene. Nice.

I knew that the show is a masterpiece! Now I know Subaru came to the new world not because he hated everything in his life (wait, maybe he did... ) but for some different reason. And why the first thing he heard was the name of the witch of envy Satella? Envy... Hm. My brain trembles!
