What a great opening to the new season!
In a way im glad that they had Subaru's checkpoint afternoon Rem was affected, as so far hes been able to go back before the incident.

But now we have been introduced to 2 more of the witches cult. So turns out it wasn't the whale during the forgetting magic, which is interesting.

Oh boy, here we go again. It's hard to believe how long its been since the original season. I was swept up in the hype for season one, but as the years passed I look on it less and less fondly and found it be fairly mediocre. I feel as though the popularity came from the community's obsession with series that try to be overly violent and Rem.

I do think this was a good first episode, and it sets up what we can expect going forward. Subaru continues to be the driving force and the best character this series has to offer by far. I'm actually thankful that the Sin of Gluttony only eats names and memories, as what I thought it was implying was far more explicit, and I had no interest in seeing something morbid. Other than that, not much else to be said about this one. It was a set up episode really.

Hopefully this season improves on what season one showed.

So, they have to bring another girl to replace Rem now, huh? Gotta admit I like Rem over Emilia, so that's about it. Hope it's not going to be boring without my favorite maid.

Finished first season in 3 days, and watched the first episode just after that today. Really liked the animation and art style during first season. But I just can't come to like Subaru or Emilia. I hate Subaru's voice. About Emilia, she could just show some more love to the guy, like Rem.

Good first episode, I really liked the sound direction in every episode of this show. Loud forests always make me shiver.

IDK why but I found Emilia repulsive this episode, especially as she started hugging Subaru when he was crying for Rem and she had all that talk about saving :/ she felt just so dull and forced and fake. Hopefully she develops more as a character but I can't stand her now as she is. I thought I just had bad memories about her but this episode showed me once again to not like her.

Have you guys seen Director's Cut of first season? Does it paint better picture of characters / Emilia?

This is sad to see. Emilia (unlike Rem) had pure intentions here, she didn't manipulate Subaru (unlike Rem) and was determined to help him. Why didn't you feel disgusted when Subaru wanted to save Emilia and Rem tried to manipulate him by telling him that she loves him? (she even ran away with him in IF route also forsaking her sister). Plus she even manipulated Subaru by emotionally blackmailing him by acting dead so that he accepts him. Furthermore, she even smiled when witch cult members broke Ram's horn because she was jealous of her. And when her memory was erased, SHE NEVER ONCE THOUGHT OF RAM. All she thought about was a guy she met 1 months ago.

8,76? Can't wait to see downvotes from the Rem fans x).

Art was same as the first season, and the animation was a little "fluider" (there was more frames and moves than usual)

Also this episodes length shows how they care about this anime, so i feel relaxed

First episode and already a fight, seems we're introduced to new villians. Seems everyone still forgot Rem, poor Rem, she has only one goal and thats Subaru. I wonder how she will react if she wakes up. is it just me or is the animation even better than last season?

Frozen Bond OVA and Season 2 part 2 are what develops Emilia the most. Well Emilia gets a lot of development in season 2 period but it's much more condensed and present in the second half. Frozen Bond shows how she met Puck among other things so it's a tightly packed package of Emilia development if you want to watch it.

The thread has been going well so far, but just in case.

Also adding my own thoughts on the episode while I'm here:

Wow, that was a rough start. I'm kinda hyped to see if Subaru is gonna go crazy again, but from the last scene, it looked like he was actually doing better this time. When he told Emilia to not look, I was 100% sure he was going to reach for the knife and kill himself again in desperation.

I believe the feeling could have been better without the spoilers that the new version of the first season brought delivered to its end, without the spoilers from the trailer, and without the spoilers from youtubers. In more it remains what it was in the first season, with some moments lower and others higher. The best part of this introduction was to find out if some of the fears were confirmed, and not apparently. It looks like it will be a good season.

That first episode wasn't an introduction to this season, it's the conclusion of the first.
Next arc starts next episode and will hopefully gather some hype around it since it's really popular in the WN and LN.

Time to prepare myself for a lot of suffering once more with arguably 2020's most anticipated anime. X_X

No OP or ED for the first episode, which the first 3 minutes was exactly the same scenes used for the ending of the director's cut of season 1 which re-aired back between January and March.

Either way, it didn't take long before we got to know two new vicious enemies from the witch's cult, Gluttony and Greed. Rem and Crusch are strong fighters, but they didn't stand a chance in the slightest. Rem's valiant fight was great and the animation for it was pretty good, but seeing her getting taken out like that was sad to watch. =(

Thanks to this, Subaru's pain train has set off again at full speed. Although he did reset himself, it wasn't enough to save Rem from her fate. Luckily, Crusch only lost of memories and is doing her best to help Subaru, Emilia, Wilheim and Felis with the next step to taking on the new threat.

Overall, this first episode of season 2 was great. The production values are pretty good, which I'm thankful for since Re Zero had that 3 month delay due to the ongoing Covid pandemic. The soundtrack direction for this episode alone was brilliant, too. =)

This whole episode was an emotional roller-coaster, ranging from Rem's flashbacks about Subaru as a person to Subaru's mental breakdown after finding out there was nothing he could do for Rem besides trying to find those who were responsible for what happened to her. Overall, a brilliant adaptation 10/10.

I also happen to notice the IF references within that scene where Rem is cornered by Lyle as Rem's last thoughts before her memories and of those around her are swallowed. I think it's tastefully included as a what if scenario.

Wells Subaru hasn't changed; still the poser trying too hard to be the centre of attention. Didn't get it the first watch, but after watching the rerun on mute, without hearing his drama, it is so clear and just really disappointing after all that character development in season 1. I had my issues with season 1 ("You need me!!!"; a knight that can't fight for nuts) but I got over it vicariously through others shared sentiments expressed, however, now that season 2 is here, I don't think anyone has yet expressed the disgust quite enough, and I need to move on. Sorry.

In a field of battered bodies and frayed existentialism, Subaru goes around screaming for Rem (if she's there, then just chill, it's not that big a courtyard; if she isn't there, wells, it isn't that big a courtyard; if she's dead then she's dead, if she's a alive then whoopie do), pushing aside healers in the middle of healing, being rough with the injured (Subaru was clearly disappointed when the blue hair person turned out to be a guy), then when he finally finds her he screams at the healer to do his job and more. Then jumps right into killing himself; the easy way out again; yeah, he shows himself to be emotionally affected by each revival, but it actually isn't as bad as it is, of all the concerns he had, he was most concerned about repeating his fight with Betelugese, not the pain.

Then later as he feels compelled to show emotion for a comatose Rem (lol, REM and Rem), he has to make it such an exaggerated, grandiose display; telling Emilia, "Please, could you turn away". Poser to the max. If he wants to cry then either just cry, or wait till Emelia walks out the room; you don't need an audience or make a prior announcement.

It's all very disturbing to the have seen that kind of emotional manipulation. He's still the same wad he was; self-entitled, self-absorbed; him reviving only makes it easier for him to learn how to effectively be a disgusting lout just enough to fly under the radar. He cries only because of he is so deluded by the sunk cost fallacy.

He's just a really disgusting creep of an anime character; and to think people hated Shinji from Evangelion for being wishy washy. I watch this for the story, but Subaru is just a creep (not the Radiohead kind).

But Subaru isn't emo?
I wouldn't say it's overrated especially since the first season of Re:Zero is just an introduction and most of the story and development is to come. I've seen no source material reader say they didn't like the next arc either.

Edit - There's also a matter of opinion of course, so there are people who dislike the show but I don't think Re:Zero should be categorized as overrated.

I liked the first season, it was a solid 6,5/10 for me. But most people are weirdly in love with this title that's why I think it's a little overrated. Also this first episode was really boring and did not feel like new arc, but rather a badly executed continuation of first season. I will still watch it though in hope that some episodes wil blow me away like the whale hunt epioseds in S1.

Can someone please explain how the green-hair princess survived without losing her arm the (probably) second time Subaru went back in time by death?

I said "probably", because it's uncertain whether Subaru killed himself several times in an attempt to save both, Emilia and Rem. We were simply shown the two attempts to save time perhaps?

What bothers me is why something so crucial wasn't explained. If it WILL be explained later, please don't spoil and say that i simply have to wait and this isn't some random plot-hole. IF the explanation was skipped, please do explain, without spoilers if possible.

I worry that if Subaru did nothing, and it seems like he simply couldn't have done anything there, the future can still change every time Subaru dies?
So, for example, if Subaru kills himself but doesn't do shit the whole day, there is still a possibility that the future will still be slightly different from the last one?

I'm wondering how the green-hair princess loses her arm at the beginning, but the second time she only loses her memories. How did that happen? Did Subaru somehow interfere there?

Rem and Crusch being attacked on happened once, before Subaru's checkpoint was set. Felis healed her arm behind the scenes. It's not exactly a plot hole since it's implied that's what happened (and that's also the explanation given in the source material).
