I can't watch anything violent that involves shears, but I can watch people getting the face cut in half, the body, the arms and even if the enemy loses fingers by a knife, but shears??? No thanks, too much for me. Anyways everything else was perfect. 5/5

it's so realistic that a group would have a inner split while the enemy's closing in on them. humans really suck at controlling their emotions at a moment of crisis.

can't wait to see how Askeladd will overturn this situation.

also, Thorkell truly is a badass! piercing through 3 people with one spear from that great of a distance... what else can't he do??

Any likeability Askalaad had has been flushed down the toilet after all the shit he's done these past few episodes. I'd almost prefer Thorkell if he wasn't so horribly bloodthirsty.

Askeladd has been like this since the beginning of the story. You need to remember this is a war story. Characters aren't supposed to be liked. They're supposed to be realistic in that era. It's episodes like this that makes me like Askeladd more and more. It shows that he knows sometimes if you want to get shit done you have to play dirty. He's the perfect "end justifies the means" kind of character and I can't find someone I can relate more. I might even add him onto my favorite list depending on how this series ends.

That torture scene made me so uncomfortable.

When I watch this anime I just need to keep reminding myself that I don't care who dies. They can all kill each other for all I care because they're all evil bastards to murder, pillage and rape. Other than Thorfinn our MC (and the priest lol) who is just a misguided kid the rest of them can burn in hell. Askeladd deserves the mutiny. He's evil too. And I guess the prince deserves safety too but whatever, no ones trying to kill him at the moment (just his dad)

Thorkell should just kill Askeladd in the most cruel way possible. The guy is so evil I really can't take it.

Pity how nobody cared about the Prince's grief.

Kinda ironic how thorfin (the kid who wants to kill you, and you killed his dad) is literally one of the few people that remained loyal to askelad. Really tells you how it doesn't matter how long someone has been with you or beside you, when they're just looking after themselves.

Anyway, thorkell is a super cool guy and obviously he's a war machine but he seems to have some pride in him. It would be cool if thorfinn had trained and stuck with thorkell instead of askelad.

This is where the thematic concerns of the show really start to play out. A brutal episode, but another amazing one. As always, I can't wait for the next one.

The VA has really nailed Askeladd in all his complexity. Cruel, cynical, humorous, violent and brilliant all at once.
They've animated Canute so pretty that I keep forgetting he's a boy.

Holy shit...that torture scene was really brutal. Askeladd had zero sympathy for the captured enemy and made good use of the shears he had to chop off the guy's fingertips and almost had his nose before Ear came along to alert Askeladd of Thorkell's army approaching. Even in this type of scene, Askeladd's words while he tortured the captured enemy did make his actions more justifiable.

I have a lot of sympathy for Canute. He looked up to Ragnar his whole life and not only does he struggle to come to terms with Ragnar's death, but the fact that Askeladd was planning to leave his body behind, without being buried made him lose his cool and it was very understandable why.

Sadly for Askeladd, things are looking bleak for him. Even though his army took out the bridge, he now has to deal with half of his army rebelling against him. Not only that, but Thorkell has arrived and even with the long distance between them, Thorkell was easily able to kill 4 men with his spear.

I really don't know what's going to happen next now. Either Askeladd's luck runs out here or he has another major ace up has sleeve that'll surprise all the anime-only viewers here, myself included.

Excellent episode and I can't wait for the next one! =D

The story is really, really good. I like how it's not rushing the plot and taking its sweet time developing the characters unlike the plethora of anime these days that rely on cheap build ups and emotionally manipulative sad backstories of characters with forced character development. And the contrast, I'm loving the contrast this show tells. We saw how Thorfinn threats Askeladd his enemy yet ironically follows him while the supposed to be "allies" are the real enemies, like what Canute is to King Sweyn. Honestly, there's so much substance of this show than what we've seen on surface level.

I just don't get what's with people deliberately searching like some hawks for anything to call "edgy," it's just a ludicrous term that should just die off already.

Edgy is just a term, what people dont usualy realise is that edgy dosent mean "bad"". Berserk is an example of that, that manga cemented the steriotype of edgy, but the point is that its edgy but it looks cool...Vengefull protagonist with a oversized sword hunting basicaly the antichrist who poses as christ, it screams 'edgy', but that is not a bad thing AT ALL. Guts has a reason why he is a badass, he has been fighting for his life literaly since he was born, forced to train with a sword to big for him since he was a child, and surviving countless battlefields.

Now for the bad kind of edgy, protagonist who says he is a 'loner withoud friends'', that lives ont he margin of a virtual society, but miraculously is a chick magnet and has high social skills and proceeds to collect a harem and some male friends whose only purpose are to serve as comic relief. Also, he is better than everyone else because...he is.

See the diference? Berserk is edgy because theres a reason for it to be edgy, it dosent try to be edgy, it just is , the other show that shall not be named just dosent, but they still proceed to try their hardest to make the protagonist feel edgy.

I'm curious as to which is this other show you're talking about....say the name already.

What a bastard place to end the episode! God, i'm gonna be anxious all week now! Poor Canute... i just wanna hug him and tell him that he doesn't need to change his gentle and sweet nature to become a violent murderer like the people around him!

As an English lass i've grown up hearing about this period in our history but this is the first time i've really grasped the fact that these were real people living through this horrendous time.... it really makes you realise that it's not just a story but people's lives. Makes it all feel more real and it's so sad and terrifying

They're really censoring the rape part of the manga. They even removed it from that one episode where Thorfinn was having a nightmare, some of Askeladd's men brought in a woman into the barn and raped her. Thorfinn ignored them and moved out. The man's daughter and wife were raped and killed. However, they said tortured and killed instead. Showing death, gore, maimed bodies, etc is okay but the concept of rape isn't?

Askeladd is a fucking asshole, he's a scumbag but he's a well-written character and the best character in the series. He's not the best because he's a "good guy." He is far from one, he's the best for being unpredictable and having so many layers.

Another favorite of mine is Thorkell, simply because that lughead just lives for the sake of fighting. He even joined the English just so that he could fight someone strong. Kind of your typical meathead shounen character but he's not entirely empty up there. He has good judgment as he saw through the men who left Askeladd's side to join him.

A bunch of cowards!! How dare you call yourself fucking vikings then tremble in fear when combat grows near!! Valhalla holds no place for the weak! Only warriors will dine with the gods!!

You should be grateful for having Askeladd as a leader! So far he have served all of his men well!! And now when he needs hes men they betray him!!! Despicable behaviour, I hope you all meet the same fate as the coward Thors!!

Love to see that Thorkell don't accepted deserters. He is a real viking believing in the Asatron! Old! Young! Female! Male! Child!! It doesn't matter Valhalla welcomes warriors who died with the sword in their hand. Vikings where total fanatics and didn't fear death they fucking welcome it!! That made them so strong!!!
