This episode was able to leave me almost speechless. The fight between Thors and Askeladd was intense and it also had some great choreography and animation as well.

Thors himself was a beast, as he defeated 28 soldiers with just his bare hands, including the berserk Bjorn and was able to win his sword duel against Askeladd. It's still a shame that Thors had to die the way he did, but before he succumbed to his fatal injuries, he was able to make Askeladd promise to honour the duel's rules and let the rest of Thors group retreat, alive.

As for Thorfinn, the poor lad had to suffer a sight that no decent kid should ever see in their lives. Revenge must be his main motive now, since he was able to sneak onto the captured ship and got the attention of Askeladd's army by giving them one hell of an angry scream, vowing to kill Askeladd and gave them one of the angriest looks I've seen in a while, too.

Excellent episode overall and RIP Thors. You were one hell of a likeable character. T_T

Actually, You have to take in the Archers in the high ground. If Thors killed Askeladd what is stopping those archers from killing everyone he was protecting? The best way was to duel and make Askeladd back off or to give Askeladd his objective and let his people go.

Because from the very beginning his people were hostage. It was because of Thors and his not killing that everyone was saved

No. It revolves around everyone. Thorffin is just a little piece of Vinland. Askalled is the real MC

I hope you're right. Four episodes in and i already can't stand seeing this damn kid anymore.

Thorfinn is the MC, thinking otherwise is foolish....He is a brat, an edgy brat at that. You are suposed to feel like that, but worry not, there will be plenty of interesting characters and Thorfinn will become a great character also once 'stuff happens'. In fact a lot of other characters that you think are 'annoying' will mature to become better as the story moves foward.

It was not stupid, there were archers above them, even if he killed Askeladd and his men, Thor and the other would have all be killed by the archers. In this way he managed to let the others go safe.

holy crap that voice acting at the end! it sends shiver up my spine! i can literally feel his hatred from the screen! his voice actor deserves a pay raise seriously! that scream would definitely damage her throat!

his dad is a true hero, a true warrior. sacrificing himself so everyone else can live. dying while standing. dayum. and true warriors do not need weapons. because it's not the weapon that makes a warrior. it's the fight they have in them.

Too soon to judge fam. As someone who already read the manga, the story doesn't even focus on Thorfinn, it's more about Askeladd (I'm really sure you will like him, don't wanna spoil anything, but he's my favorite character in this series). You will also see a great character as thorkell.

This was so AMAZING. I kept pausing because I didn't want to see what would inevitably happen. Huge props to Thorfinn's seiyuu, you could FEEL the pain on your skin, your mind, your heart, everywhere. I haven't read the manga, but man, I just feel it everywhere. Well done, Wit Studio!

Wow this scene was sad in the manga but I dont remember tearing up like I did here.

Anyway, something I hope people pay attention to is Askeladd's reactions. Between his dialogue to the village kid about valuing life more, to his sullen look when hes thinking about how Thors managed to defeat his men without taking a single life, its clear Askeladd didnt take much satisfaction from killing Thors. His muted response to Thorfinn's rage compared to the mocking laughter of the rest of his crew says a lot too. All of this should be pretty obvious to anyone paying attention, but its something to keep in mind about Askeladd going forward.

Yes , Askeladd is the best character in the Vinland Saga manga, because he is very complex and not easy to understand, especially if you don't pay attention to that details

I wonder why people think originality is a virtue.
Most classics are a rip-off of previous classics, only made in a different fashion that strikes our inner chords in a different way.

That's why there's a difference between trope and cliche.

You are getting too riled up, there is no substance in what the user you were quoting said. He could not even get the theme right. Look who's being too dumb now.

My point is universal, it was directed to the values behind what the user said. Look who's being too dumb now.

BRUHHHUHHGHGHGHG THIS EPISODE OMFG

no words what in the love of hell this episode was so intense and sad i? the way thors died.. the impact it was so mf sad and just. powerful,, thor being one of the main reasons why the story even exists,, seeing him dying like an honorable, great warrior,, on the verge of death with his son hugging him and sobbing.... man..
fr wanna see thorrfins kicking everyones ass for his dad,
this series is so mature and realistic? the feels like u could grasp the characters' emotions as you're watching them.. really good animation.. absolutely in love with thorfinn as well, i cant wait to see him all grown up and i also think that the way they started it with the flashback was great for non manga readers (like me), made me get into the atmosphere of the series and its better knowing the story from beginning like this too,, anyway this anime so far is reeeally good if it continues like this ladies its gonna be one of the ult superior ones of this year... a tough wait till next monday
also sorry if my wording is bad but i just watched the episode so still kinda losing it

Am i the only one underwhelmed by thor's death ? I mean even Ned Stark wasn't as trusting and "honorable" as he is ! I felt his reaction was completely unrealistic, considering that by accepting death he put his comrades and son's life on the line, putting their fate in the hands of hostile strangers.

Thorfinn breakdon at the end was cool though.

If you want 100% action and don't really care about anything else , then this is not the show for you man. Action is an important part of the series, yes, but the story itself takes center stage, especially after a certain turning point later on.

Great episode, very interesting fight and a great ending with the protagonist's proclamation of seeking vengeance. My only complaint would be that I personally find the pacing to be a bit slow, particularly in this episode, however I'm sure that I'll get used to it as the series progresses.

After taking a long break, here it is! The latest episode covers the death of Thors, he really made a sacrifice to save his son from being ambushed by the people of Askeladd. Those eyes of Thorfinn, they filled with anger, seeking for revenge after for what they did to his father. Great episode as always.

I had the feeling these 3 weeks separating the previous episodes from this one would never end... a small eternity has passed.

But it was honestly worth the wait : a great show leaded by the powerful Thors ! Even if his death was pretty obvious, as well as the non-respect of duel's rules by the opposite side, they still delivered a real full bad ass moment, going from the beginning to the very ending, with a death that hardly caught him.

Thorfinn's development will be extremely rich & interesting, I can feel it.

Finally, I've been craving the next episode of this so badly.

I had a feeling this was the week we see Thors' final stand. He was a better man than anyone, he went out the most respectable and honorable way possible, through an act of selflessness against an enemy that we all knew was never going to play by the rules.

Now because of his death we finally see Thorfinn's transformation, from a naive child full of hope into someone bent on revenge. It was all executed beautifully. The fight choreography in this really stands out. The cinematic feel is undeniable as well.

Now I'm anxious to see exactly where this is headed. I knew Thors was going to die and Thorfinn's story would be centered around revenge for his father, but other than that, I've kept myself in the dark about anything else. Next week should be really interesting.

So glad we're going to back to regular weekly episodes.

Kinda unfair saying that, seeing as the kid was not alone at the back of the ship, it was not Thorfinn's fault. Plus he knew he was going to die the moment Floki appeared on the island.

I mean... What the fuck were the crew doing not holding the damn child in place? One moment they are pinning him down, next moment during the DUEL they let him go to run around. That kid and this scenario as a result of the kid pisses me tf off, especially cause I liked Thors. Hopefully the son becomes a likeable main character and also realise everything was 1000% his fault.

on a quick note, when the kid popped up of the barrel, they could have just turned the ship around and put him back on the village. Would've just been a slight inconvenience

The narrative of this episode was one of the most unoriginal storylines I have ever seen, and yet I still liked it for some reason. The execution of this show is amazing considering they managed to make even the most predictable scenes seem interesting.

That was really a tough situation for Thors, though... The way I see it, that was probably a good outcome for him. He said himself that he wouldn't be able to protect everyone if it turned into a free-for-all, and he also does not want to kill anyone on top of that. The archers were camping out above the hills too, and Thors can't really do anything about them. The best result would have been if Askeladd actually honored the terms of the duel and left like he was supposed to, but at least he listened to Thors' last request and let the others go, I guess.

The thing I don't understand is how Thorfinn managed to stow away again. The fuck was Leif and the rest of them doing? Thors literally died for them and they couldn't even keep track of his son?

What's the difference?

The moment Thors' kid snuck in with them I knew he'll die via using his kid against him, glad to know this cliche is still strong, that being said the one that I didn't expect was how naive Thors was for sacrificing himself for them when the bastard he fought literally didnt give a shit about codes and stuffs, how he believed he'll go through with not murdering everyone even after killing him is beyond me, he's op af he could have incapacitated them all if he wanted but nope.
Don't know, nothing really impressed me this episode. I blame people who overhyped this too much and gave me too much expectations for it.

I get that this is Thorfin's story and he needed to have a good motive for this to become a revenge story but damn... at least don't make it look too dumb. Just got in and already not feeling Thorfin's backstory.

Am I over reacting? maybe. I didn't want Thors to die in such a dumb way but whatever. Hopefully Thorfin becomes a badass like his dad.

Seriously. I will repeat this to these people again and again. Askeladd has archers atop the cliff. If he just cared about the result he wouldn't even humour Thor's proposal, and Thors know that. There is no way Thors could get out of this alive or save anyone if a brawl really broke out when there are archers ready to snipe them and Thors has to fight Askeladd when his crew could go on the slaughter. Askeladd has his own reason for the duel. It's clear that both of them can read each other as a person. And for the most part Thors is correct. If Bjorn didn't butt in Askeladd would have honoured the duel. And it should be obvious that what he passed off as a joke isn't a joke at all.

Thors chose to sacrifice himself because he knows Askeladd wouldn't hurt his son now. From the start he knows he's going to die on the journey, he just didn't want the kids or Leif amd his crew involved.

I do udnerstand though. In part this is the anime fault by telling events out of order. The anime only watcher never get to see Askeladd's talk about reading people before this fight.

Obviously he's going to survive but let's see were they take him.
Good thing Askeladd told the pony tail guy his place.. those guys were nothing but annyoing from the start
