Psst, remember that when you're forgotten, you're erased of existence.
They didn't die DIE DIE because Keppi still remembered them, that's how they managed to get back.
I guess that applies for Mabu, but Reo just died because Toi shot him lol. Now that I think about it, how they both turned into those “forgotten” tokens nevertheless is a major plot hole.

There were a lot of things that were not explained to us (maybe due to being only 11 episodes long).
Maybe because they are kappas and not humans Keppi is allowed to mess with their existence. All the other villains were already dead when the extraction took place so their was nothing to revive anyway. Mabu died after his extraction, and Reo was shot and possibly would have died but seeing as keppi could make a comatose Enta walk around as long as he was a kappa for 4 hours, maybe he did something similar to Reo but as a ring instead.

Too many questions not enough answer regarding the way kappas work
Not the greatest of riches, the warmth of my family, the tender embrace of a lover, or the offer of continuous success could ever triumph over all the yaoi I could ever enjoy.

What a great experience! I’ve never watched an Ikuhara show while it aired before. It’ll probably be a long while before we get another show from him. Can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve next!

To the people who don't understand the ending- You're not supposed too. It's fun if you want to but the thing that wasn't the focus of the show was the relationships and bonds that people have. A lot of questions weren't answered because those things weren't important. How did Reo and Mabu survive? Who knows, Keppi is a magical diety like being so I'm sure he can do most impossible things.

The ending, their ending, is whatever you want to believe it is.

For me this show is a 10/10 if you can manage to suspend your disbelief

The show spent too much time in the "monster of the week" period. So not enough time was used to develop the story into anything interesting or complex. There was plenty of potential across many many plot points, but almost all of those plot points were dropped halfway through and went nowhere; so by the end, none of plot points connected to each other. It was just kinda meh.. Rating 6/10, only for the style points; without Ikuhara this would be a 4-5/10.

(...) I dunno, Ikuhara is weird (...) Honestly this is Ikuhara having fun and you can definitely see the experimentation in the episodic stories compared to his usual 'long' stories.
I usually like the stylistic device of mixing episodic structure with linear plot, see Tatami Galaxy or the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. This is somewhere in the middle. That sort of story telling usually requires a re-watch, as the timing of looped parts work better in a fast, movie-esque binge than in a weekly interrupted long run. Goes straight to rewartch list for me ...

I was always torn between a 7 and 8 rating for this series, and the final episode tipped the scale towards the latter. In a nutshell, this is a magic boys story themed around the value of social relations told in a mix of episodic and linear storytelling, with a happy ending and tons of symbolism. With Ikuhara's long history in the genre and style, Sarazamai’s brief eleven episodes condense his approach into a fairly easy to digest offering, fine tuned with the craftsmanship of a watch maker. As for the face values, art, pacing and handling of plot devices, and in particular soundtrack are outstanding - the decades of experience and development simply show.

The harder to approach thing is the story. The final episode offers what is pretty much at least three endings, which are the fantasy-level restoration of the Kappa rule, the realistic jail term for Toi Kuji, and the open-ended, symbolic post-suicidal reunion of all the antagonists and protagonists. Pick the one you like most, they are all equally real. I was laughing out loud when the Otter disintegrated with the message "I'm an abstract concept". Talk about nudge-nudge wink-wink self-aware humor. The episode also succeeded at the symbolic level, they all were briefly revisited and properly concluded / explained. The negative aspect is the relatively heavy handed use of symbolism (not overdone, but still) and using character drama as a story telling vehicle, I prefer more of a comedic lightness with that as in Tatami or the Coen Brother stories over it.

It's been a rollercoaster ride in which I was about to give up after the first third of the show, regained hope in the second, and now was served a satisfying end. This will be the only non-recurring series of the spring 2019 season anybody will remember in a decade from now. Even if Sarazanmai didn't always make it easy to love it, it deserves place in my "Recommendation" list: 8/10.

I love every part of this show AND THAT END, it's like a musical.
With my level of English I can't express everything that made me feel.

Yes, it was accelerated, but at the same time it's the most direct Ikuhara series in his message, that's why everything explodes in the end.

Infinite love, Sarazanmai.

As expected of Ikuhara, his endings don't make much sense, but that's the charm.

ALL OUR 3 CENTRAL CHARACTERS: Got their endings,
ALL THE EPISODIC TITLES: explain their intentions to connect during the soccer match 4 years ago but can't because of their actions. All connected into one.

And mah boys Reo and Mabu got their former places back.

A damn fine job even if there are puzzle pieces still far loose.

So the ED song is all about Toi, and that one standing figure which exists at the endcard.

In the end, all 3 of them manage to connect together.

Ikuhara-sensei, you have worked hard.

The way everything connected was beautiful. The titles of all the episodes came back as well. That made me so emotional.

Despite seeing a bad future for themselves, they decided to be with each other. Basically, they chose the present, which is something many people have a hard time doing.

The humour was still here. Like, Keppi sucking his own...

Kuji got punished, but he still has his 2 friends.

Sarazanmai can mean 3 plates. I always thought it was talking about the three protagonists, but I just noticed it can also be talking about the three circles with the words hajimaranai, owawaranai and tsunagaranai. It can also mean plate-indulgence, but I can't figure out how this connects to the story.

Oh god, Keppi and Sara look disgusting as half kappas. They make a nice couple. Lol.

Did Haruka start doing the Lucky-selfie broadcasts?

I love that they didn't have a dramatic action scene to end things, and they went with what they've always done: sing! The consistency is quite important.

This has become my favourite anime to ever air. It's going to be difficult to find another anime of this level of awesome story telling. This doesn't try to be realistic. This takes advantage of the fact that it is a hand-drawn animated story. Also, the layers of meanings hidden in every episode is so impressive. I wish I could do that.

I want to show this to someone, but I can't think of anyone open minded enough to watch this.

This show peaked in the beginning and in the middle (Haruka episodes were tear-jerking). Toi, while my favorite of the trio, his story with his bro was quite lackluster and confusing to me. Anyways the cops were definitely the highlight of the final few episodes IMO.
The soundtrack is so good. Art and animation was too.
Keppi was hilarious. I wanted to see more of Sara-chan tho.
Not my AOTS but still quite up there. (either Dororo or SnK III might be the aots)

Overall 8/10

(first episode is still a 10/10 MASTAHPEECE)

Oh, I love it. Super fun, bright colours ad crazy stuff everywhere, and touching on deep social issues.
BTW, the main villain outright calling himself an abstract concept probably wasn't meant to be funny, but it got a laugh out of me. Felt like Ikuhara was just trying to make sure we all get the message. Speaking of Ikuhara, this actually feels like a nice change of pace from the way his endings usually are. Pretty much every other show he's made has ended with the characters disappearing from existence and just leaving their influence behind. But here, disappearing from existence is what they've been fighting against from the start. Just thought that was cool

FUCK what a solid ending episode.

Absolutely NO ONE guessed the meaning of the ED lyrics. Holy shit. Also the reason for the reflection/flashback water imagery. Damn.

Anyway – god, what a great show. Sort of weird pacing at times, but all in all just so enjoyable – great music, VA work, visuals, characters, just the whole concept…

Honestly, I think it might've been intended to be funny. I'll be honest I rarely laugh out loud at media and that's the hardest I've laughed at anything in a long time. I think it was intended to be playful at least, if not that funny.

Ikuhara seems pretty aware of how heavy he lays on his metaphors. It reminded me of that one time in Utena when the lyrics to the song went 'allegory, allegorier, allegoriest'

It wasn't bad and the whole connection thing is interesting but somehow the show itself didn't connect with me. A fine concept, great art and animation, music and lovely characters. But overall it was a bit of a mess, too many things were meant to provoke emotions and in the end, I just felt nothing.

Typical nonsense and confusing Ikuhara ending lmao. There were a lot of references to Yuri Kuma Arashi and Mawaru Penguidrum during this episode.

So far, the best ending I’ve seen is Yuri Kuma Arashi’s.
While I was expecting something more depressing from this last episode, it ended on a happy note, still enjoyed it a lot and got emotional.

I feel like that was actually amazing. I wrote about it last time, but in 11 fast paced, weird episodes it made a rather complex cast of characters who reasonably conflict with each other in this bombastic conclusion we just witnessed. It's impressive! I didn't cry in the end but I was hit with so much joy I thought I was going to. I can see why people love Ikuhara and now I want to see his other anime!!!

Toi lost the one 'real' connection he had, and like Chikai would always say- Toi tried to throw everything away. If everything sucks, throw it all away. But he saw that he was being stubborn and the connections that were there, Enta and Kazu, pulled him back into reality. I wasn't so sure about the themes of this anime, but it seems so obvious now. Even the ED track literally spells it out in the clearest way possible, at least on a base level. This is an anime that's centered around the necessity and the struggle of connection.
  • "I don't know if I can become stronger. Even if you aren't here now, give me the courage to reach out. Please stand by me. Stand by you please. I want to get rid of everything. The rain washes away my tears, I just want to get embraced by your warmth."
I suppose it was always clear, but it finally just clicked for me. Mabu literally couldn't tell Reo his true feelings or his heart would explode, that seems like some clear symbolism to me, and things only got better once he risked it all to be true to himself. All three of the main trio in their monologues phrased it as they felt a part of them was waiting for someone to force them to stop being so stubborn, to realize their connections were real, to be open and true to themselves which we could see in every one of their character arcs. Toi and Kazu rejecting what they had and feeling as though they didn't belong. Enta not controlling his true feelings and hiding them, bringing them out in jealousy and anger. Even looking at Otter he was 'an abstract concept' of desire, and the zombies were made from desire, the desire to fold, the desire that things are too hard so we should betray. That instead of making things work or facing our vulnerabilities we should run away them from, all the zombies seemed to do that to me- the desire to steal the things that represent what they care about instead of having a strong connection with someone and facing that vulnerability. Toi was lured into erasing himself by destroying all of his connections. Otter himself as a concept was destroyed by the boys coming together in the end, Keppi taking on his despair, and Mabu and Reo being honest with each other, the fear of connection and desire to get an easy way out was destroyed.

I like how genuine the vulnerabilities this anime went over were. Feelings of not belonging, guilt, hiding true feelings. The deep desire of humanity to have intimacy, friendship, belonging, but the fear that comes with that, the fear of sorrow, rejection, guilt, not fitting in. The characters weren't the deepest characters I've ever seen, but their problems felt real and meaningful and understandable, I'll say again, for 11 episodes its quite an accomplishment. I'd say the core base level thesis is that, we have to be there for each other. Life is hard, and everyone needs a hand to pull them out of their stubbornness.. so we need to face our vulnerabilities and be there for each other, to face the sorrow and the happiness that comes with it. It's normal to fall into the desires Otter represents and we need not to blame each other when we do, like when Enta stole the dishes, instead we need compassion to help each other, like the boys constantly did when one was in danger!

Going past all of that, the character arcs were for the most part nice, and this was just such a blast. It wasn't the first time I've heard Kiryu Kazuma sing, not by a long shot, but the whole Evangelion-esque mind sequence leading to them fighting to keep their connections, the Keppi vs Dark Keppi in the background while everyone sang, Mabu and Reo coming out and the Sarazanmai song turning into a beautiful orchestra lighting a stairway to follow, it was so full of energy, it was so fun, it put a huge smile on my face. And I suppose it points to another thing, despite this anime touching on serious topics and having serious things to say, it never felt too serious. Through it's drama it was always weird, fun, and endearing. It has a flow which I want to loosely compare to a favorite of mine, FLCL, where it's weird, zany, symbolic, but has a lot to say about issues incredibly central to the human experience, and while it may get serious it never, ever loses the fun chaos that it started with. I would say Sarazanmai definitely has more dramatic moments than FLCL, but they give me that same feeling in a loose way.

For now my score is a 7, or an 8, I will decide with more thought. I need to rewatch this to truly wrap my head around it and see where I stand on it, but for a first watch it was incredibly fun, and sweet.

Edit: On more reflection, I almost have one criticism/nitpick regarding how fast the character development is. Development such as Enta deciding he's happy where he is and not wanting more with Kazu, no longer being jealous, and Kazu going from distant & near emotionless, to happy & energetic before the blink of an eye. It's not bad development, for Enta saw that there's room for three of them to be connected- Kazu would still fight with his all after everything for Enta's sake, there's no reason to be jealous. Kazu's reason for behaving that way was resolved. But they tended to be slightly jarring to me! I suppose you could say it's expected in a series doing this much in such a short amount of time and I may even like them, it's just my one real point of confliction here.

In other news, I really loved this conclusion too! I'm a big sucker for happy endings and I feel that the characters grew enough to deserve them by the final episode. And I was dying with laughter over the otter flat out singing "I am an abstract concept" with "CONCEPT" written right behind him. I guess Ikuhara really wanted the more distracted members of the audience to get it as well.

amazing series,i even had to take one of my favourites out of my list just to swap it with sarazanmai!
as cheesy as it might sound,i really "connected" with the characters and anime on a whole another level, each episode left me wishing there was more and even right now,i wish it had more eps from 14 or 24...this was practically the only thing i looked forward to watching every week and as soon as i realized that ep 12 was the end i started sobbing through out the last 10 mins since it seriously holds a special place in my heart now.
i really like how Toi ended up doing time in juvenile,i guess it must of took some weight off his shoulders and cleared his head so he could continue living life and while i wish they would of expanded/spent longer on Entas problem which btw was NOT solved or helped in any way but meh.
thankyou ikuhara sanfor giving us a good ending, since most of his (directors) other works end up extremely bitter sweet or just purely bad ending (as in sad) but yay im fulfilled that all the characters are happily together
also i was really excited about this since i love Kunihiko Ikuhara A L O T and all of his works, and this really went above and beyond my expectations once again.

overall,9/10 (10/10 if they had actually given it like 2 more eps but this is just me being sad about it being over)

Amazing show. Sad to be so underrated... The final episode was beautiful and the message is a very true. Without connections we don't exist, we know we're part of the world when others recognize our existance somehow, like they said: Living in the same city, being part of a family, working together, having fiends, loving someone... Those connections make us feel alive. Everyone will go for good and bad situations, feel happy and sad... And we're here to support each other.
Beautiful lesson.

I'm going to miss watching this on Fridays...a series that is less than 12 episodes managed to give more character development, better art, more fantastic soundtracks, better story, and more fleshed out characters than most series with over 500 episodes can. An anime that I almost never watched because I thought it was incredibly weird at first has turned one of my favorites of the season, possibly of the year. I'm glad the main three survived in the end...so, thank you, Kunihiko Ikuhara, for creating this. I deeply thank you from the most sincere bottom of my heart.

I'm happy they chose to do a happy end, I think my heart wouldn't bear a bad one.

I'm a little lost with the future part, even if it has sense as it has been said, but I feel confuse about it.

Anyway 8/10, I hesitated with 9 too. And maybe anime of the year, but it's only the half of the year. We can have other surprises.

Wow this has been a MASSIVE waste of time [...] if you're a fan of Ikuhara's works then good for you, you probably enjoyed this, but going into it BLIND or as a casual anime viewer, you would probably drop this nonsensical trash within minutes.

I've never seen another Ikuhara show before this and I already know it's AotY – nothing else even comes close. The question remains: why in god's name didn't you just drop it instead of, apparently, putting yourself through the nine circles of hell every week and then feeling the need to blog about your ridiculous, incorrect guesses here?

Because it was my first Ikuhara anime and wanted to see what the fuzz was all about. But couldn't find anything of value other than some flashy cuts that were repeated every week to save budget. Also if I didn't watch it, i wouldn't be able to criticize it right ? weSmart

Either way now that I know he's overrated after this horrible experience that only lasted 11 episodes (which is another reason why i forced myself to complete it) no way in hell am i touching other works of his i was previously interested it, like Mawaru Penguindrum. Two cours of the same kind of trash would drive me nuts.

Also nothing makes your opinion/take any more viable than mine.

It's almost like a common style of his is hammering patterns into your mind for specific purposes and then subverting/changing/exploring them further later on. Given this type of comment, I almost doubt you actually watched (or paid attention) the entire show. Not to mention that the animations, e.g. Kawausioya (cop dance), actually changed every week or whenever they showed up. I'd dig up the Twitter post comparing the first four but tbh I doubt you actually care and instead are just here to share some hot takes based on misinformation. Oh well.

And my point is that I dislike said style and find it boring. Is that so hard to get through your skull ?

Gee.. imagine feeling this offended over a random "hot take based on misinformation" posted by a random guy on a forum.

Final episode was definitely the worst one where it kinda ruined the consequences for some characters' actions, but I still enjoyed it overall and the ost is an easy high point for the series along with some excellent sfx design

The cops resurrection is a bit infuriating but overall my favorite anime of the season.

8 or 9/ 10

I never expected them to stay dead, main characters rarely truly die the final death in Ikuhara's anime.

I knew Reo and Mabu were coming back. If I'm not mistaken, Sara was their "adoptive daughter" in the real world. I didn't expect Sara to be Keppi's wife/princess/sister I'm not even sure.

I was surprised to see Toi go to juvenile prison. Three years later so I'm guessing they're high school age now.

Overall the series was enjoyable. Superb animation, wonderful voice acting, tons of symbolism and references.

Apart from the possible futures scene, the conclusion I was expecting.
I loved the "I am an abstract concept."

4/5 Did Keppi become a kirin for a moment or what?

Overall:
No idea what to say. It was nice to see an interesting original project trying to really provide something, in those times. It was very "precise" and knew what it was doing, never straying from it.
I may have liked it more in another format (+1or2eps, 1st half episodic, 2nd half more centered on the story).

Score: 7/10

I might have been oblivious to things here and there, but I fail to understand how this was non-sensical. Compared to Utena by the same man (as part of a team, though), it was crystal clear from the start about its intentions (what it was talking about and what was happening).

Idem. And thanks for the dishes, I kept hearing "sara" but wasn-t sure it was the right word.

This finale is probably going to be the best of the season, without a doubt.
Unfortunately, this anime will not be noticed enough to get AOTS.

I actually gave this a 9/10. The animation was excellent, the characters were definitely interesting and intense, and I have a feeling it would have been even better if I was a native Japanese speaker/reader because there were puns I caught and probably more I didnt. This was a really well thought out anime. I am going to miss it. I do wish they had show what the others did while Toi was in lock up but pretty happy with the end.
