they (iwatobis) all literally told haru point blank, that he could be whatever he wanted. nagisa told him he was talented in a bunch of things not just swimming, rei told him being true to himself is the best way to be free, makoto told he just wanted him to find a dream period and be happy. he even said outright that if staying the way things were really and truly was what haru wanted he wouldn't have said a word and respected his choice. yet all that support was either brushed off or avoided. makoto got screamed at and pushed for basically saying "haru the wold is yours so go find what you want to do"

haru is not the only person who is a third year but he was too busy being a selfish self absorbed tool to even ask makoto once what he wanted to do in the future. not once. makoto spent this whole season going through the stress of having to make these big choices all by himself because haru was too busy avoiding him for reasons that don't even matter now because he's doing the thing anyway. he screamed at him and called him names for doing nothing other than showing concern. makoto is leaving his comfort zone and had no one to talk to because the person that should have been there for him didn't give a sh*t about him.

Masterful episode. Probably the best in this season so far, with a few other ones worth mentioning as well. Actually, everything this season has been amazing honestly. I'm tempted to bump up my rating even higher than an 8.

I liked that Haru found his resolve. I need to find mine. :|

We need more sports anime in this style, big focus on interpersonal relationships, SOL feel with drama. More.

Whoa, slow down there with the attack. I never pushed anything. I wrote everywhere that "I THINK" this is what is happening. The one who is pushing anything is you. Really, you must be part of the production team, to know so damn sure what exactly is happening and what Haru is supposed to be feeling. And of course I try to understand a character by using my own experince. How else are you supposed to judge a character? I use what I know, and take note of what I don't. Sorry, english is not my first language (and not my second, but who cares), maybe I don't know how to, then pray tell me, how else am I supposed to voice my OPPINION without hurting your (or anyone else's) sensitive feelings?

Asperger? Yeah, maybe, why not? Why so against the idea? It's not my headcanon. I didn't push the idea. It was the first time I voiced it. And I was not the first one to do it. So obviously I'm not the first to notice some things that are different about him. Let's see: Difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication? Check! Lack inborn social skills? Check! Restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests (taking the same route always, doing the same things, eating the same thing all day everyday)? Check! Appear to lack empathy? Check! Have a formal style of speaking? (someone said that he is like the wise voice in the group) Check! Avoid eye contact? Check! Be preoccupied with only one or few interests? Check! Unusual preoccupations or rituals (come on, he wears swiming trunks instead of underwear)? Check! Skilled or talented (drawing and sculpting, beside swimming)? Check!
He could very well be an aspie, alright! Was that the intention of the creators? Who knows! The creators put him there for a reason. They could have very well made four sweeties like Makoto, and we would have a very boring show. I don't know if the creators wanted to show us that different people need different aproaches. And I don't know if they wanted to show specifically an asperger case. But if they did, then they failed, because people see Haru as a braty bitch before a kid with psychological and emotional struglles.

Someone else also picked something about abandonment issues? Well, that's adding insult to injury then.

I'm not saying that he's the best character and is not his fault for what is happening. I'm just saying that he IS different, and reacts differently to the same situations. That has been thrown to us from the first season. That's why I'm judging him differently. Before concluding that he is a jerk, I want to try to understand why he acts the way he is. Anyway, considering that he's been like that his whole life, I think his friends already know that he won't act and react the same way as they do.
Haru is bad? Let's talk about the rest of them, shall we? I can somewhat understand Haru, because I can somewhat identify with him (I emphasize. Somewhat.). I can't understand Mako's desire to please everyone, and completely forget about himself. I can understand Rei's insecurities, but I can't understand his obssesion with "beautiful", while choosing butterfly swimming gear and butterfly pijamas and his obssesion with theories and calculation where is not the place for them. I can't understand Nagisa's bublly all-time-cheerful personality (actually, most of the time, that's damn annoying) and lack of understanding of personal space. The whole first season, Rin had a stick up his ass, for no apparent reason, to the point of not really talking to his own sister. Gou's obssesion with muscles, to the point of including that in that school presentation, probably had driven new members away. Souske had bulied Haru from the moment he appeared on the scene and had lied to everyone about being scouted and about the injury.

If you remember, Haru always said that he doesn't swim for winning or for time. But because he swims so well, everyone assumed he would go for that when he was not ready. Everyone was pushing him: Ama-chan, his old couch, his teachers, scouts, school principal, reporters, students from other school clubs, members from other teams and his friends.
Nagisa: "Before we swim at nationals, there's something we want to say. Because I get the feeling we can't swim as a real team there unless we do."
Rei: "Haruka-senpai... Both Nagisa-kun and I have admired your swimming for a long time. Watching the way you swim so free and unbound by anything, I found myself wishing I could swim that way, as well. But now that you're no longer able to swim freestyle, your swimming just isn't like you anymore. We want you to swim in front of the whole world, so that more and more people can see your swimming. And then, if more and more people were able to see your swimming and be moved like us, and wish they could swim like you too... I couldn't imagine anything more wonderful."
Mako: "Haru... I don't think you can go on this way, either."
Come on, you don't put the weight of the whole world on someone who just had a breakdown!
Yes, Rin also tried to guilt trip him. But he said somewhere before that he has found his dream, and he's not gonna swim for anyone else, not even for his father's dream, but for himself. I still don't like what he did here, with the words and story. What I did like, is him taking Haru out of the same scenery, away from the same people. I liked Rin showing Haru that there is more than Iwatobi, that there is more than Japan. Because it seemed that he couldn't see past that (what he said in the first season there? "About three years until I'm ordinary. I can't wait to be ordinary"). And he already kind of was the best there. What's there more to it? Of course he always had a choice. Everyone there has one (except poor Souske). Did he see that he has a choice? I don't know. Everyone wants something from him. Does he want the same thing? I still don't know.

And no. Mako didn't say that he can do whatever he wants, even stay the same. It was Haru who said that he wants to stay the same. And Mako said that he doesn't. Again, implying that he knows Haru better than Haru knows himself. An it might be true (it probably is), but that's not a way to tackle this problem with some people. Looks like things pilled up, and he snapped (I would too. Yeah, self insertion. So what?). In Australia he had time and (partial) silence to acknoledge what he wants, before everything is breaking apart even more. And I actually do think that Haru is fragile. More so than others. And you need to understand that not everyone is able to reach for help (fine ex. being depression). People are different. And (again, IMO, before you jump at me again), he needs to fix himself, before he tries to fix his team. Time in Austraila, breaking away from the routine and therefore his comfort zone, away from it all, might just be the cure for that. I guess we'll see in the last episode.

The fact that the team is breaking is not only his fault. Is everyone's. Especially Mako's. As much as I love Mako (he's so sweet, I would wrap him up and take him home), he is weak. He is not a leader. He listens to everyone, does what everyone wants of him, except what he wants himself. What happened to that episode, where everyone watching thought that he is gonna become a couch to teach little kids to swim? No, Mako is not a good captain. And actually, out of all of them, none would be. Mako is weak. Haru is detached. Rei is insecure. Nagisa is childish. Actually, I'm surprised the've gone this far. And Rin is iresponsible (letting Souske swim, when that might cause permanent damage to his shoulder). Souske is stupid, not taking care of himself, when he knows how serious that injury is, to just blindly follow Rin.
But hey, they're kids. And the bigest problem they all have, is proper comunication. But that's a problem for all animes. That the source for all misunderstandings and therefore, angst and drama.

And yes, if he doesn't say sorry to everyone, I'm gonna be mad.

Damn, this is definetly tl,dr.

This was a refreshing episode as we see Rin and Haruka connect. I found Rin's past somewhat interesting since he had a bit of trouble at school.

Australia seems like an interesting place. I want to go there someday :o

For all those people who think that this episode was only about shipping and are whining about that (especially Makoharu fans) - you are too shallow and you are surely watching this show only because of your otp (or handsome boys in general).

I'm a die hard Rinharu shipper but I did not perceive this episode like that at all.

So here's my advice - go check out the tumblr discussions on this episode and then come back here to rate this great episode. Some people are really putting effort in explaining the deeper meaning and symbolism behind it because there really is a lot going on.

you can save the hurt feelings cause not once did i attack you. your personal projections and theories were irrelevant to my post. that's what i said. because i did not, and still don't, care to talk about some fan theory about how he might be on the spectrum cause i don't care about that. have fun with the people who do. nor did i care to talk about your personal problems with stress management and how that helps you relate to haruka. you can have your opinions, it's a free world. that doesn't mean i have to engage or care about them. same goes for mine so it's no skin off my back if you don't agree. i don't win a grand prize of a million dollars if you do. it's not that serious.

the rei thing was kinda worded horribly but imo it read like you aren't swimming like you used to and we want you to swim free and show the world how great that is. no where did they say he had to do anything though. they didn't say him not swimming free in front of the world would make them stop swimming. but take it or leave it as it can go both ways.

however since you seem set on believing that somehow rin taking haru to australia when he is at a low place and then isolated from iwatobi to keep pushing the idea that competitive swimming and then telling him he bases his whole athletic life around haru cause he needs haru to be the one in front of him laying down a path for him to be a better swimmer isn't pressure than i will just leave you to your opinion on that.

a world where strong independent rin who set off to a country where he didn't speak the language well all alone as a child to run toward his dream now is someone who can't function without haru paving the way for him. to the point that sosuke had to tell haru to keep swimming

or that they turned one of the best relationships into some codependent garbage where rin has to keep trying to force haru to do what he wants and wll manipulate him by saying he can't swim properly without haru there. even tho just earlier he apologized for pressuring him. instead of a relationship where two personalities clash but find strength and resolve it's some clingy dependency bull.

haru is not stupid. he is well aware that there is a world outside of iwatobi. he didn't need rin to open his eyes to this blatant fact. especially since the world he showed haru was still competitive swimming. but i guess it's different and more meaningful somehow if the pool you compete in is in australia filled with friendly blondes.

when you get down to it haru left his teammates to flop about in australia instead of putting time in to fix the bonds that were falling apart. he left his team when they needed him. he left them when they should be practicing even more. when they needed to talk things out as a group of friends and as a team. he left his team to go to australia to find out that, gee golly the world is a big place full of competitive swimming. what a great vice captain and teammate he is.

he ignored his supposed best friend so much that makoto had to call and talk to rin about his future. he ignored him to the point that makoto didn't feel he could get support from haru for his choices. great friend he is there.

The Engrish is strong in this one.

I miss Australia.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

Haru being an aspie is as much probable or as much of a fan-based idea as him being just another anime jerk.

But you're right. Each with his own opinion and analysis.
But I think there is more to him than this, or he wouldn't have those friends around him (evil characters usually don't). I see him as more complex and I refuse to see him just as an one-dimensional asshole main-character.

I'm sooo dissapointed. Again.
This episode was so predictable. We all knew already what will happen, so I didn't enjoy this episode too much. It was really nice to see Rin's family, and a little bit about his past, but when it came to Haru...
I mean. I don't really understand why he suddenly changed his mind. It was waaay to rushed and made only co the plan that 'Rin will show him what he needs!' can work. Nah, it doesn't work for me. I think that they destroyed a huge piece of Haru's personality which I liked before, now I can't understand and only watch with eyes wide opened, trying to understand what's going on with this guy.
Aaaaand the bed fanservice. I mean. What for. WHAT FOR.
And why do I have this bad feeling that the topic of Makoto and Haru's relations problem will be just swept under the carpet because there won't be enough time for it.
Meeeeh. I don't know what to do with myself, I feel so unsatisfied.

Free! has been marketed like that (handsome boys) since the start and the anime does contain a lot of queerbaiting, so obviously there are going to be people in it only for that. It essentially IS a fanservice anime, albeit one with a plot.

Anyway I'm not that big fan of the show to know all of these theories and fandom thoughts, but... it was a rather relaxing episode, I like it. Aussies were the best :D

Woah, amazing.

The scenery for Australia was great, and the seiyuus for the foreigners weren't half bad. I loved the host parents and the story behind Rin's stay and his struggles there.

Loving how this is being wrapped up.
It feels like one of those come-of-age SOLs where we bear witness to the turning point in the lives of five (er... nine?) young men as they grow up and start their journeys into adulthood.
Reminds me of my own youth and how searching for that one path that I wanted to go down after high school seemed impossible (actually what am I saying, I still haven't found it yet XP).

Ah the feels of remembering our youth. You sorta get the feeling next episode someones gonna go all sentimental and say "when we all look back on this summer, we'll remember fondly all our struggles, the experiences that we all shared, and the bonds which bind us together." or something like that. Either that or they go all "lets meet each other in the Olympics!" and "Yeah, it's a promise!".

Hrm... why do I feel like I wasted the last decade of my life? Probably cuz there's nothing memoriable to look back on.
Shit, now I'm just depressing myself. :P

Man, Australia in Anime form looks even better *o*
Woah, that one scene looked like Rin was being lured by a freaking pedophile O_O
Them hot Australian Anime ladies *o* That blondie with glasses :3
Oh, they hired English voice actors and actresses, but still.......Engrish is the best ahahaha. Miyano Mamoru for the win!! Young Rin's Engrish was adorable~
Oh, you two!! You look like a couple, really. See, Haru, that is what you want. So, go and get it!!
Let's see the last episode~

Just a small thing, but I saw "Plan B: Catch a bus" on the side of a bus, which is a current ad campaign to battle drink driving here in Australia... And a bunch of other Australian brands!

Even the Aquatic Centre is accurate.
I guess they did some research about Australia!

Although, the accents were very exaggerated. Though most do it that way XD

Haru, do me a favor and go fuck yourself.
So much drama over the "pressure" he was feeling to become a pro and now it seems he wants to become pro, wtf was that drama all about then? It makes no fucking sense, this pisses me off so much...

This so much...

After almost 2 full seasons I still feel ZERO connection to any of these characters. I'm so disappointed because I really wanted to like free, but I just can't. Every time someone opens their mouth in this series it just pisses me off because it's all BULLSHIT and it adds absolutely NOTHING to the series/character/scene/etc. Why KyoAni? this could have been so beautiful- :I

omg hahaha I found this ep really fascinating because I live in Sydney, Australia XD The aussie accents were a tad bit over exaggerated but still pretty spot on. I was really amazed by the scenery and attention to detail that was put in this episode. Its so surreal to see locations such as Hyde Park, Lidcombe Station, Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Olympic Park in anime form! Its even more weird when you've been to those locations on a regular basis XD I'm probs gonna like have a freakout next time I'm at Olympic Park XD

I don't why but seeing them made me really happy lolol probs because it makes the anime feel a lot closer to home

I couldn't stop laughing at Rin's english, it was too adorable XD
