seriously? it's a pretty straightforward anime tho (it's actually rather easy to understand even if it's a really complex subject)

maybe you didn't get the ones before because you may lack a bit of historical and/or cultural concept (when you read some complaints you can see some of them lack understanding of the cultural aspect), that's probably it

the novels goes from one story to another because they're mixing stories from a few novels a the same time, example: the third episode was from "Paradise Lost", the third novel of the Joker Game franchise, that's why most of you are confused by its weird pacing and "jumping in time"

given the anime is only 12 episodes short, they probably want to show a bit of everything so if you want to know more you have to read the novels

Sakuma is not the main focus of Joker Game, you could simply consider his role as just an outsider point of view (for us to understand better D agency while we learn about them alongside Sakuma)

and episode three and four are not fillers

PD: might as well let you know, episode 5 [Robinson] will focus on another spy: Kaminaga (in London, Great Britain), and episode 6 will focus on [Asia Express], another mission with another spy probably

yep, that guard at the end considered the boy as his lover (given the boy was being used as a mere tool we can't be certain the "romantic relationship" was real or just a mere wishful thought that guard created in his mind -tends to happen, some people get so obsessed they even create non-existent scenarios like a supposed romantic relationship when there is none-, or could be the boy was being ordered to make the farse "real" in order to use that guard later on, or it could be true they were in love! could be, could be not, we will never know)

the focus in the episode was the corrupt officer/captain (and the corrupt background as a whole to give us an idea of what used to happen there at that time), not that boy's daily life, historical background and/or relationships

It's getting really irky that nowadays - manga, Ln, novels etc. don't get a full/proper or whatever anime adaptation & just clearly screams "go read the original source!" into ya face. Don't get me wrong, I'm cool with the majority of the adaptations I've watched but srsly, it makes me sad. I mean how could I just sit n sweat my ass for such thing; I don't have time to waste on that. Time is precious; should use it properly. Anime industry is such a savage, hmph.

to be honest I don't really mind
I'm not as much into anime as I am with manga/novels or videogames so I don't necessarily feel cheated on with unfinished adaptations (plus ya can't really ask for something unfinished to have an original ending yes or yes, kinda kills the hopes for a new season or maybe that's not what the original creator wants, plus people will start complaining about how unfaithful it is blah blah blah, can't have everything)

plus I see absolutely nothing wrong with using anime as a form of publicity, sometimes I'm not sure what to buy and thanks to new series popping out that problem is solved? sometimes, only a few have the privilege -only the ones I really really liked- (example; Joker Game this season, if it wasn't because of the anime I would have never known about the novels)

-----------------------

I think there's the tendency in forgetting what a spy "main" job actually is...which is to gather intel/information

and even though the stories happen in different places and different times (although only a few years apart between them at most) they're still correlated in both the historical context (the prelude/eve of WWII) and that that at least one of the characters is a spy from the D agency (even if we may not know that right away)

that said it doesn't mean it's impossible there won't be missions for all the spies together (though that I have no idea, kinda sounds weird to have them all together as they may attract more attention if they're in group than if they're working in solo, and in ep 1, after Sakuma loses the joker game/poker game Yuuki lieutenant mentioned the fact that they would be alone carrying out their mission for the rest of their lives, so people complaining about that is just....ehh??)

they're gathering info in preparation of the new war that was about to happen/was starting to happen and also hence why their policy is not to get killed or to kill, that's not their job, they're not assassins and the last thing they want is to attract more attention than necesssary, their only job is to gather info (as seen in episode 3) or meddle in between corrupted stuff in order to have more power and use those they found out as guilty as their pawns/ use them to their own advantage (as seen in ep 2 and probably that was also the main focus of ep 4, in a more subtle way, but there's a clear similarity with the role of Sakuma and that soldier in ep 4)

I'm not really sure what are guys hoping/complaining for tbh, the series by itself is faithful to its premise

the waiter boys could be spies of the mafia, I mean, they certainly work for them even for the opium trades as intermediaries (it is confirmed when we see the boy counting the money) and prostitution, and they certainly can kill if ordered too (I'm guessing that answers your question about why he killed that man; because he was being tracked down, and the man was becoming an hindrance and the truth needed to be shut)

but the point of he ep was not how the mafia works per se, but the corruption in the military stationed there

Felt kind of lost this episode, but got into it towards the end. I think the spy was the reporter guy.
I liked the twist and the whole atmosphere at that moment, the ending was good as well, but the lover thing caught me of guard. Didn't expect this would show relationships like that.

Holy shit this episode was bad.

The show already has shitload of problems with narrative quality and piss poor writing, but that Erased level "reveal" really takes the cake as worst of the worst. Holy shit could not stop laughing.

Its sad really - the production values are good, the setting could be very promising(if not for whitewashing and completely dumb illogical writing), but the execution falls flat on its face and the writing is downright awful. Not a single character is interesting or someone you could care about.

The fact that it is episodic also does not help. So far we had 4 episodes of "Ima superspy so I will smirk at the camera" kind of level of plot that does not care much for coherence, realism or characterization. These last two episodes especially serve pretty much no purpose at all except showing more of the same.

And next episode is storyboarded by Kazuchika Kise, AKA the man who contributed a lot in how trashy GITS:Arise turned out.

i don't think it's so hard to tell the spies apart. You just have to listen, the VA's are well known and have distinctive voices. It's better to just focus on the actual story. The fact that the episode didn't follow the spy was quite interesting. Fukumoto was just being manipulative, which is important for a spy, i guess? Very enjoyable episode.

What I don't get is who Kusanagi is???

The Reporter Spy and Kusanagi are not "in cahoots with each other", they are actually one and the same guy (http://myanimelist.net/character/137449/Fukumoto). You notice that when he removes his spectacles in the end.

It's an okay episode. It would have been difficult to do worse than the third one.
I appreciate that the real main character stays in backdrop as an undercover here. It contributes to broaden the complexity of the world setting in addition of justifying the whole spy gist of this anime.
The presentation, as ever, is as colorful as it is immersive. In terms of style, JG is doing it right. It's well written on the surface. However, the scenario is full of plot conveniences as for Honwa encountering Kusanagi out of sheer luck instead of using his sense of deduction and the way he gets this entrance coin at the right moment. My eyes rolled.

In his final report to Oikawa, Honwa apparently has an epiphany whereas we have seen him do very little in practice... Conan Edogawa eat your heart out! Also, nothing could have hinted us about this military/transvestite romance apart for the desolated expression the private sports when corpses are disclosed. Which is too meager. I'd say in terms of mystery, it's a semi-failure for me as there's no way in hell the spectator could guess the entirety of outcome.
This episode deliberately violates the sixth rule of the father Knox's decalogue

This doesn't really have anything to do with thinking. The spies didn't get a decent introduction making it harder for viewers to remember them AND their faces actually look similiar. Also this episode was kind of meh - I didn't really care about the whole (rather obvious) mystery and this episode's spy appeared for such a short amount of time. I'm beginning to doubt whether this "1 spy / 1 episode" formula was a good idea ;/
Because its not being spoonfed to you. The problem with most anime's narrative structure is that it translates things to the viewers like they are stupid and use heavy exposition to make people understand things.

Yes you are so smart and so much more mentally capable than the average human. Your superior intellect puts you in the top percentile of the world and I applaud you for being able to differentiate poorly-introduced characters. We plebeians are unworthy of this masterpiece. Probably the weakest episode for me so far. It seemed to have very little relevance to the story, as the spy was not even the protagonist. Not that we even give a crap about the spies, given we were barely introduced to any of them aside from Miyoshi... At least last episode we got some insight into Hatano's character. Who was the spy (reporter) this week? Odagiri? . __ .

Not sure why the director decided to adapt the novels like this instead of a more linear approach to the story/development of characters.

Ok episode. I don't like the episodic formula of the last two episodes. This episode was a bit too over the top in the last part. I would have liked to see how Honma discovered that the captain snapped and start selling opium.
Too short to be memorable.

I agree. That would have made a MUCH MUCH better episode than 'my boss did something stupid and now wants to cover it up' especially since they already used that formula in episode 2.

Well, many things to say about this chapter:

The good:
-It's rare to see a male homosexuality portrayal without it being bait for fujoshis.
-The guy had a Rudolf's nose for all those people who claimed that every character look the same.

The bad:
-Cheesy villain. Laughing as a psycho is a (bad) fan fiction level resource. Please just use it when it's necessary.
-The dude who took the photo was totally not suspicious. Like, he had an asshole face and everything.
-The "He was my lover" thing was too convenient.
-Needed more Sakuma's abs.

A mediocre episode compared to the others. No wonder why the score dropped so harshly.

You just lost the game

First thing I spot on this episode is Nakai Kazuya's monologue in the opening scene, and I had a hunch that the episode would put Fukumoto on screen. Then BAM I'm right. So I just took a notice over the chara from the VA not the character's appearane, since they're too hard to differ one to another, I guess it's for the secrecy of spy world, perhaps? :/ I'm not sure.

But overall I enjoyed this episode too much, the MC is a good one, even at first I don't quite understand what is the case this time. As the story end, all of the hint were fit each other and it's a good call. Just maybe the revenge stuff at the end the story, I thought it's quite weird? idk
Just say

It's a miracle Zoro manages to find his way around Shangai.
