The problem is, a character's personality is pretty much tied to the plot and stuff. Unless it's meant to be a comedy, they often have decent social skills (at least within the show). Revenue is often tied to the plot too, but is way more amenable to commercial decisions like "we plan to sell this show to average japanese boys. they would be turned off by characters having over-the-top wealth". It's appearance that is skin-deep and easy to change. |

I won't go as far to say they are in equal amounts. But sure there is a lot of manservice. They don't get as much flak because they are less prominent I suppose and the type of anime that have them aren't really watched by a lot of male viewers. And it probably takes more to sexualize female character than male characters. Some people still believe Free has no sexualization, which is obviously false. |

I think it has to do with the fact women are more about women's appearance, then men do about other men's appearance. While that's probably true, I don't think it would have a lot to do with character design on a show. If it did, attractive women on anime would look pretty different: less scantily clad, rather more naturally endowed. I think we can safely say that anime pays more attention to the physical appearance of female characters to please male viewership. |

You could ask the same about the other side, why is there complaining about man service like free when there's so much fan service?? Everyone just complains about what he ones that concern them it's just the same people that are complaining about probably are'nt the ones complaining about the hence why you may not have realized (or you did realise and just ignored it most likely) Not to mention with your Goku example, it's obviously not something intended as manserviece, that would be the equivalent of someone like Schwarzenegger or Batista "Manservice" cuz he's ripped or something |

I haven't really noticed that much manservice, though maybe that's because I don't watch the right shows. And fanservice generally feels more crude to me - more sexual - so perhaps that's why people are bothered. Also, a shirtless guy isn't nearly the same as a shirtless girl. People just see those two things differently, so I don't get why are you trying to set up this false equivalency. |
