That was not half-bad because along the way I figured out what they were doing. Unlike the previous eps where I just watched them solve things I wouldn't have ever thought up the solution of. Though I must say the moment I saw that the subtitles put "Wan-chan" instead of "dog" like a usual translation would, the first half of the game was immediately given away.

It seems some people here understand Chinese, so I just leave this.
In the novel, the PIN of the case is 9089, meaning 求你別走, "Please don't go". I don't have Chinese knowledge so I can't tell it's more acceptable than in the anime. Anyone can tell or think of any reasons anime team changed it?

Seems like this anime is a hit or miss.
I personally enjoy this. The subtitles did ruin the whole "Wan-chan" being a person though. It would have been better if they used "puppy/doggy" instead of throwing away the "What a surprise, Wan-chan is actually a Chinese person" thing out the window. If you keep it as "Wan-chan" it's going to be pretty obvious it's actually a person.
I did question how Haruto got all the information about the dude being adopted and whatnot. The drama president didn't really show any signs of knowing besides saying that Maruto has a problem. And I doubt the teachers would throw out private info like that. But that's w/e. This happens a lot in animes, so eh.

Another good episode, despite the slow pace.

Haruta's pretty damn talented, not just with music and his detective skills, but also his acting was good too!

The mindgames was cool and engaging though, helping out Maren in the process with his personal problems.

I'm still a little bit surprised that other users are still comparing this to Glasslip. From what I've seen so far, with the show's progression with the story and character development, for me, it's a good improvement compared to Glasslip. Whether it can stay like that to the end though, that remains to be seen...

Wow. They really left the answer to the mystery until the very last minute, didn't they? I had no idea what was going on for most of the episode, until Haruta explained Maren's situation right before the ED started. Because of that, it was hard to connect and sympathize with him.

If I'm not wrong, the wan comes from the sound the dog makes (at least how it's perceived in japan). I think little kids call dogs wan-chan too, so it wouldn't be obvious that it was not a dog. If they used puppy/doggy or anything animal related then it just wouldn't work.

Now for the episode, I liked it but I wasn't feeling Maren much , wolf girl stole the show. Anyway I like slow slice of life anime. It's nice to watch something that just calms me down, there's already boku dake to make me all tensed up.
Comparing it to glasslip doesn't feel right, that show was so unninteresting, people only remember the cocks.
Still want more Chika.

This is turning out too boring for me. I like the premise and the variety of characters, but i can't get into this so far.

Haruta knows too much stuff (as in from very different topics) for a first year high schooler, and the execution of the premise has been too bland.

So far, this is a 5/10 for me, tending to 4 if it keeps going like this. It's been simply boringly average.

Still gonna give it a couple more episodes to see if it picks up the pace.

Ohh that's actually an interesting one. I guess they might've changed it because

1) That's a lot more of a stretch than 2099.
In romanization (pinyin), 2099 = er ling jiu jiu, and what it means is "ai ni jiu jiu"
9089 = jiu ling ba jiu, and what it means is "qiu ni bie zou"
I mean both are kind of mutated anyways, but I'd say the second one more so because 9 is being used for two different sounds.

2) Haruta probably can't figure out the original, 9089. If you told me that this was a code, I wouldn't have been able to figure it out, despite Mandarin being my first language, and knowing about the number codes. Since people do know 520 (I love you) and 9 (long time), it's easier to figure out what 2099 means.

3) "Love you forever" make more sense with Maren's story than "please don't go" (more accurate would be "beg you don't go"), given that Maren was the one put up for adoption, why would they tell him not to leave? He's not even with them. It's more touching to hear the reveal that Maren's parents actually do love him and have loved him since the beginning. Maren agonized over being unloved and thrown away, so again, the word love is important to Maren getting closure.

How the fuck did Haruta know so much about Maren

I mean I did like that Maren was Chinese-American and not just Caucasian or Chinese because we've already seen that 100 times before and that they even talked about a controversial subject like China's one child policy but Haruta's illogicaly broad knowledge is starting to get ridiculous

The atmosphere is a bit too light, but the narrative is constructively anyway, maybe a little faster in advancing the story, but you can forgive this flaw, for me. Drawings quite good as quality, the animations are a bit woody, the pleasant scenery. The roles of the characters seem to have already established, nothing new in terms of character, oh well! This anime series has strengths but also the weaknesses, I hope they know mitigate the latter.

That was actually pretty fun there. And Haruta is a real troll, blocking Chika with Sensei like that, this guy is dead serious in his love.

The acting was pretty fun with those mechanics involved, a battle like this for a change is absolutely refreshing to see.

I love how Miyoko became so expressive and with a cutely stage fright. And that thing with Maren was deep but it was enjoyable.

Also can we say Chika is already a "cute girl"? I swear she already is.

I doubt a kid in high school is capable of that kind of technique.

And besides, how did he find out about the trunk and grab a hold of it in the first place? Even the actor friend didn't know about it.

What are you even talking about, kids who don't have their intelligence squelched by the sociological sin of belittling children as intellectually inferior, are capable of a lot of brilliance. I've met kids like that before, they just usually aren't quite so altruistic.
Don't treat kids with the fallacious assumption that they are less intelligent and they are more likely to impress you, if they're at all gifted (which many are and don't realize).
That's one of the things japan has going for it, they don't belittle they're children so much. Although the american perspective has been eating away at japan's well-being for some time.

True, but a kid undeniably has a lot less resources than an adult. That's what I meant. Idk why you're putting words in my mouth.

This is just the style that a lot of japanese mystery stuff tends to use. It just goes with it's flow and treats to some nice resolution. But it's not about showing you the whole process step by step, you're supposed to use your imagination to think of the process (it also makes for discussion material: "how did he figure that out? discuss." getting people talking is good business.). Maybe if they were making a movie they might go into the mystery in more detail, but it's a 20min problem of the week show, cut it some slack.

You just described how plot holes are born. This anime just used that whole "use your imagination" thing to its advantage to get out of having to make sense of the reasoning used behind the episode.

But you're welcome to explain to me how Haruta was able to figure out that Maren was born with bad legs, put up for adoption, had a trunk that he received from his former family and knew the password to the trunk. feel free to use your imagination

*shrugs* i'm not one that puts my brains to cooking up answers for untold fictional events all too often. I merely state potential benefits.
Also saying that's how plot holes are born, as if that's inherently a bad thing. If it's not done intentionally, then it is indeed faulty writing; however if the intentions are deliberate, then it is artistic licence. It doesn't matter if you like it or not, if you don't like it, don't watch it.

Besides, what's the point in criticizing everything and embittering yourself, when you can much more easily just accept it as it is and find reasons to appreciate it, or just be indifferent? The result is you being a lot more content in general.

So in other words, "even after all I've said I can't explain the obvious gap in reasoning by taking my own advice."

And its obvious that it was done intentionally (I did say the writers were exploiting that technique). Just because the intentions are deliberate doesn't mean it has to make sense. which it doesn't in this case.

Also, you said yourself that this "japanese tendency" to leave things out is meant to create discussion which is what I'm doing now. That's why I'm pointing out the obvious flaws in this show that you seem way too overprotective of. Just admit to the plot holes.

Seriously, I'll rest my case if you can find any way to make sense of this crap. But it doesn't look like that's going so good for you

I'm not overprotective of anything. It's just so tiresome to see everyone nitpicking so much instead of just enjoying what you get. I said that i'm not the type to propose explanations of minor things like that. I'll go explain technicalities and sciences and whatnot of intellectual anime that people had troubles getting, but not stuff like this that hardly even matters.

Sooo...how did Haruta get to know so much about that Maren kid? His OPness doesn't even make sense anymore.

Also why was Narushima questioning how he has two families when she already knows he's adpoted?

I thought they made it pretty clear that he planned the whole thing with the help of the teacher and that friend of Maren's. Two great sources of information right there.

And she probably didn't consider his original family as one since they gave him away.

So basically you got nothing right? This isn't nitpicking, I'm seriously having trouble grasping the flow of logic that this show follows but at this point I just don't believe such a thing exists. Excuse me for recognizing actual flaws in the writing instead of turning a blind eye to the mishaps like you suggested. If something is bad then I'll call it out on it.
And oh please, calling this a minor case doesn't mean that it's allowed to have plot holes out of the blue. Saying that you won't even bother explaining this is basically admitting that you can't

I don't wanna have this entire conversation again so I'll just say that even marens friend was clueless about his past. And I doubt that narushima is that stupid
