BD that see jump in ranking are perhaps those that are particularly strong on storefront (versus through internet retailers), and this seems to be particular the case for UtaPrince: *** *11 **2 *** *** *** *** | -- | UtaPri 2000% 4 *** **7 **6 *** *** *** *** | -- | RailgunS 3 *** **9 **8 *** *** *** *** | -- | OreImo. 4 *** *14 *10 *** *** *** *** | -- | Highschool D×D NEW 1 *** *17 *16 *** *** *** *** | -- | Kiniro Mosaic 1 *** *** *17 *** *** *** *** | -- | Neptunia THE ANIMATION 1 *** *** *18 *** *** *** *** | -- | Ro-Kyu-Bu! So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

When a show that is estimated to sell 6-7k copies is 17th on pre-release day and 16th on release day then you know that is a crazy packed week. |

C3bu pretty much died in the BD department, I don't think I have seen a ranking that low for BDs at least. |

jmal said: I just got the following from the 2ch sales thread about recent performance of anime made by Gainax:Really goes to show that the company known as "Gainax" today, which hasn't had an even remotely decent hit since TTGL six years ago, shares essentially nothing in common with the name Gainax that still conjures up memories of some serious hit franchises. One slightly cruel joke in 2ch is whether Gainax is an outfit for tax evasion as it is not uncommon to see money-losing operations being used to hide tax evasion. Well its terrible performance indeed begs the question of how it could survive in this competitive industry. jmal said: C3-bu got the most negative feedback I read in Japanese forum on this season's anime, and perhaps even the most negative one in the last couple of seasons (not counting controversies which had little to do with the technical merits of the anime itself). The way they did not use a series composition to handle the overall story structure and allowed separate writers to control individual episodes may be one key flaw of the series, and the rookie director, who seems to only have graduated from school 3-4 years ago, clearly did not have a good grasp of the direction of the series. And nobody seemed to understand what made the fans of the manga ticked for them and thus almost every adaptation choice, most of them depart drastically from the manga, got serious objections from the manga fans. Ranked this week at #94, it could have easily been absent from the full top 100 ranking, which could be what happens in its later volumes. Oh well.I kinda get what they were trying to do with C3-bu and all, but I don't think they had the team in place to pull it off properly. I expected bad sales, but, wow. |

The really worrying thing is a lot of the staff who helped created Panty & Stocking, which is wacky but yet became a cult favorite to some fans because of its irreverent humor and crazy action, have since left Gainax in the following years. So Gainax is acutely short of experienced hands. One place where Gainax gets a lot of mentions is an unexpected place: In forum where fans celebrate the announcement of KanColle being animated, trolls poured cold water by saying "Just wait until you hear Gainax gets to do the project!". Of course nobody knows which studio will take the project but it just goes to show how low fans' confidence level with the studio has fallen. |

The fact that they jump to the Goddess Saga and skip the content in between is a huge lost to manga fans. Though I agree at your point there it just that a dissapointment when looking at the number cannot be dismissed easily.AdolTheRed said: I know that the KamiNomi animes have had pretty low sales, but I thought that the manga was doing pretty well? Although, I cant seem to remember the sales from it's last volume. It's not the most interesting answer, but sometimes you just have to take a show's success (measured by it continuing to get made) at face value: Kaminomi has now had three TV seasons and multiple OVAs and an ongoing manga and a variety of music releases so it has to be doing something right. Whether it's a manga boost (or offsetting a drop) or the anime sales being "good enough" to break even, or loads of merchandise, etc... (surely a combination of them all) in the end, it all boils down to "they wouldn't me making more if it weren't a smart financial investment". I know lamenting Kaminomi's fairly low video sales is a common refrain, but honestly, I think you should view it as a successful franchise, not a failure to be mourned. I'm not saying it'll continue in anime form forever, but even really successful franchises rarely go beyond 3 seasons. I actually didnt even know about KamiNomi's sales till after the third season started. When I did find out, I was really surprised, considering how it got 3 seasons and a few OVAs. And as mentioned by Neo, even if you know that it's doing well in other areas or just breaking even from the anime sales, it still kinda sucks seeing something you like not even doing nearly as well as you hoped. |

^ I know a few went to A-1 Pictures or turned freelance, but you are right most of them went to Khara or Trigger. Since Panty & Stocking was only 3 years ago and many staff had gone after that, it is even more unthinkable to talk how Gainax nowadays compares with Gainax before then. |

This is where a director becomes so important, the director is the person who takes the team and molds it into a single unified vision. C3-bu really lacked this and the really intriguing direction they were taking the show through episode 11 completely imploded in episode 12. It isn't so much the content, I mean Yura learning that to like herself came before having others was a fine concept, even though they confused this with "learning to trust and work with a team" (though this shows the lack of unity in plot), but they way they went about showing this was wrong. Serious in 10, mystical 11, comedic (in theory) in 12, the director was floundering with the voice. So no I am not surprised this tanked, it deserved to. GuP could have easily ended up being similar to C3_bu, but the director kept them on message from start to finish. He and the writer had a vision and they showed it, which is why the fans responded as they did (and why I am overjoyed they are keeping the band together). C3-bu lost focus, and that ruined the series. |

C3-bu is basically GuP done wrong. Every single aspect is heavily flawed, maybe with sole exception of Ren-chan. On the other hand, Manglobe's TWGOK is actually good, despite the fact they now had to stuff more chapters than in first two seasons. I'm honestly impressed with what they did here (too bad I can't say it about their other shows) and fans in Japan seem to agree seeing how it has above 2k prediction. |

While I wouldn't argue with the first week part, are you sure about the "ever" bit? Do we actually have any data that might indicate the size of a typical anime's long tail? Obviously, the fairly high prices that dissuade impulse buys, the tendency to pre-order and the immediacy of release after airing on TV would all increase the size of the initial peak compared to the long tail, but having well over half of the all-time total sales in the first week still doesn't seem very likely to me. |

Most shows suffer a drop off during the release of subsequent discs, so that Date a Live 4 sold less than the opening offer of a series is not surprising. Jal's comment was that it seemed that Prisma was doing better than forecast, which if true means that you can't say that Date-A-Live is losing momentum based on ranking, rather that Prisma is merely doing better than originally thought. I am not surprised Prisma is doing well, it comes from a Studio with a strong, passionate (and some may say insane) fanbase, it is related to one of the most popular animated series of all time, was in and of itself enjoyable to watch (even for people who are not Type Moon fans, which includes me), and could very well be improved by BD resolution (there were a couple well animated fight scenes). All that points to strong sales. |

LoveLive! and SnK are oddballs, most shows don't tack on 500 sales/week for months. Most just sell in the first few weeks. I agree it is kind of weird, not many people wait until all the discs are out to buy them at once or buy them during the holiday season. Japanese anime buyers just don't seem to do that. |

Just watching Kitakubu's episode 4 and the wall breaking it does about having to retool itself into a fight anime and how most people decide whether or not to keep watching it (implied: buy it) at episode 3 is quite true and funny at the same time. They really are self aware. The presales figures by episode 3 are pretty telling, after that there is some movement for sure, good examples where later episodes can build momentum but in the case of that show, it was never very good and later episodes couldn't save it. Kind of funny, ironic and sad at the same time... adding fanservice, sports, battles... until Karin points out that they are in episode 4 so it's too late, very funny. Too bad it wasn't funny enough! |

It makes perfect sense in Western model since the longer a creative item is out, the more it loses value. Not to mention distribution companies can't catch people who only buy an item with lower price points. |

It makes perfect sense in Western model since the longer a creative item is out, the more it loses value. Not to mention distribution companies can't catch people who only buy an item with lower price points. The limited market is most likely the prime issue why we never see price drops often. |

But it being a mainstream shounen the TV ratings are the important thing and it's doing good in that department as far as I know. Though it's supposed to be relocated to a midnight airing spot next week and I'm not sure how this will change things. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

The comedy really improves as the series progressed. A shame it sold so badly, I would have loved to see more of it. |

Question.. are some anime more acceptable to the mainstream japanese than others? Because I noticed stuff like Gundam, EVA and Madoka absolutely destroy the sales of most stuff and I've also heard anime in general is frowned upon by the older audience. |

rederoin said: I have a highly flawed pet theory that most anime sales numbers are decided before episode 1 even airs and definitely by the time episode 3 has aired so there is little you can do to turn a low seller into a big hit with the exception of one off bonuses like event tickets. Girls und Panzer is an exception and to a lesser extent OreGairu but most shows get on stalker and don't move a whole lot due to episodes. Oreimo2 had a lot of people waiting for the end, again rare. This season Free certainly went up and the end of Kinmoza seems to have had a good effect. So there are more than enough exceptions that my pet theory doesn't hold up but it still seems that most sales are decided very, very early in the season and it takes a lot to move them. hpulley said: rederoin said: hpulley said: Just watching Kitakubu's episode 4 and the wall breaking it does about having to retool itself into a fight anime and how most people decide whether or not to keep watching it (implied: buy it) at episode 3 is quite true and funny at the same time. Whether the Madoka, Raildex, SnK, Free!, and UtaPri2 buyers are just out of money or if the shows are just bad or if there has been some sort of shift I don't know but this season sucks overall is not in debate. |

ThangLong said: The way they approach the "anime out in the market for too long" matter is to issue discounted BD or DVD box. As Hoppy said, keeping the premium image for the BD/DVD is important for the business model, so what they do is to strip out most if not all of the extras and pack all the 6 (or more) volumes of BD/DVD into one package, and sell them at a discounted price. And they also need to consider its timing. It used to be that BD box came only several years after the anime ended but now BD Box came in much sooner (I think Another got a BD Box just one year after the series ended) and this is causing many fans who bought the original BDs to grumble that the distributor is making them look like suckers by releasing BD Box so soon.I don't understand why Japanese companies would not discount discs that have been out in the market for too long. It makes perfect sense in Western model since the longer a creative item is out, the more it loses value. Not to mention distribution companies can't catch people who only buy an item with lower price points. hpulley said: In general I agree with your theory. From my observations once a BD sales settled in a pattern, which could form really early - say within the first 2-3 episodes, and it would take a lot to move the sales to another level (which usually is some really big twist and of course really cool extras announced). What I think we disagree is how early it is decided (you seem to think it is earlier than the first 2-3 episodes), which is relatively minor differences. So there are more than enough exceptions that my pet theory doesn't hold up but it still seems that most sales are decided very, very early in the season and it takes a lot to move them. And back to Kitakubu, for me the talk about sales in ep.4 actually was a kind of a low point to me for the series as I started to get fed up with the rookie seiyuu voicing the roles and I found the humor ok but not too funny. So I was quite surprised myself that I actually found myself enjoying the series gradually more as the series progressed. The seiyuu seemed to be improving (if only for a little), the humor more funny (and I was pleasantly surprised that some of the humor played out much better for cultured people who know about Japanese literature or classical music). That said, I am not sure it is enough to jerk the series' sales that much, sad as it may sound. |

Guess the sales go down to pave way for other series? |

jmal said: The Kill La Kill PV is quite funny, brought to you by the guys who made TTGL, who no longer work at Gainax... Trigger now! They didn't actually say that but they might as well have.symbv said: The really worrying thing is a lot of the staff who helped created Panty & Stocking, which is wacky but yet became a cult favorite to some fans because of its irreverent humor and crazy action, have since left Gainax in the following years. So Gainax is acutely short of experienced hands. As far as I know there's basically nobody left from the TTGL days. They're all at Trigger and Khara. "Gainax" used to mean something, not so much anymore. |

Guess the sales go down to pave way for other series? You have a good point. Vol 3 tail, though normal for other shows, is not normal when compared to one and two (evident in the fact that 1 and 2 were still on the list for the at the beginning of the week). Now part of this is due to a very big release week, so the tail is being obscured, but it will be very interesting to see what the release numbers are for this volume. 2 was a big drop from 1, so how 3 compares to 2 will establish the trend for the entire series. |

Hoping that it stays strong after these next few weeks! Also, I read from some thread in this News Section, but I think someone mentioned that Japaneses (just kinda quoting/paraphrasing him/her, not trying to be racist. If I sound like one, I'm sorry!) tend to wait until all the volumes are released and go all shopping spree on them volumes. Hoping that this is true, since AoT/SnK is like, The Anime of 2013 (commercially and critically; Although I think that Kill La Kill and Monogatari Series: 2nd Season will come close in term of popularity, since the former is the successor product of the guys who made Guren Lagenn and the latter is an excellent adaptation of a trending light novel series.) |
