Hey guys, I've recently been getting into anime and am having trouble finding a new series to watch and need some suggestions. Below I will list the series that i have already watched organised into groups, these groups being; 'Favorites', 'Enjoyed a lot', 'Enjoyed' and 'Didn't enjoy so much'. Code Geass, Steins Gate, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood Shakugon No Shana Part 1 & 2, Elfen Lied, Cowboy Bebop, Angel Beats, Death Note Clannad & Clannad Afterstory, Hataraku Maou-sama Dragon Ball and DBZ, The Familiar of Zero (Zero No Tsukaima), Neon Genesis Evangelion Shakugon No Shana part 3, High School DxD Dragon Ball GT, High School of the Dead, Tenchi Muyo A few notes: I'm not too fond of gory violence, Elfen lied is an exception (Neon genesis as well to some extent) as I felt that the violence was "justified"(if that's the right word?) and not just for the sake of it. I have separated Shakugon No Shana part 3 and Dragon Ball GT from their counterparts as I thought that they were poorly thought out compared to the others. What I'm after in the series is something with a solid, well thought out story line, good characters/character development. I don't mind if the series is ongoing or finished but i don't like unnecessary fillers which don't contribute ANYTHING to the story. Some of the genres i like are: Romance, action, comedy, adventure and fantasy. TL;DR Look at the list (in groups of favorite to least favorite) and suggest anime series that you think I may like. If you feel like it could you also add a sentence or two on why you like/would recommend the series. Also, feel free to ask any questions if things need clarifying. Thanks in advance! :) Jack |

I really enjoyed Seirei no moribito (has very few fight scenes but quite good and not for the sake of it) Well, i liked the story of Shinsekai yori and the whole setting thing You might also like madoka magica, mushishi (well thought out concept but it doesnt really have a plot?), |

Ergo Proxy and Shinsekai Yori do not have well thought out plot and characters. Both feature convoluted nonsensical plots for the sake of confusing the viewer. Shinsekai Yori goes so far as to give the viewer false answers multiple times only to completely retcon itself just to seem mysterious in later episodes. I would still recommend Shinsekai Yori to the OP, but I wouldn't describe what is essentially a pretentious retelling of 1984 as "well thought out". The story from SSY has been told hundreds of times in books most people on MAL haven't read and movies nobody should ever see. Ergo Proxy is a good show, I can't speak on if it is entertaining, but I can say that it is again, convoluted for the sake of appearing mysterious when in reality it just doesn't make any sense. |

No one's saying these anime are completely original nor did the OP say he wanted such anime. Disowning recommendations because they seem similar to series/movies outside of Japan isn't the aim of this thread. |

Says the one who recommended DTB over some of the best anime DTB is the definition of "nonsensical plot for the sake of confusing". The series doesn't even know how to explain itself |

Thirding Baccano . It's short and confusing at first, but by the end of it you'll probably love it. The characters are also very charismatic. Bakemonogatari Shingeki no kyojin Kuroko no Basket |
5 main aspects I base my ratings on: 1. Did DramaEnthusiast make a thread about it? 2. Is it better than Breaking Bad? 3. Did MellowJello recommend the shit out of it? 4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL? 5. Is it actually good? Scratch the fifth point, it's not very relevant... |

The fact that just talking about the characters can spoil the series, really just show how well its done. |

Why is it that none of the series above are on your list? Also Texhnolyze is the very definition of mental masochism, and it's amazing. He made no input on series involving dystopian undertones, so I don't get why you're trying to be a smartass here. I'm seconding the list above, along with most of the things already posted (I'll list them if you actually care). To add a few of my own; Haibane Renmei - Personally thought it had a well balanced plot progression. Kara no Kyoukai - movie series, same difference. Katanagatari - Same author as the monogatari series. Loved it personally. Fate/Zero - For lack of ufotable. |

Shinsekai Yori. Ignore Solvite's retarded post which I'm about to attack. Solvite said: Ergo Proxy and Shinsekai Yori do not have well thought out plot and characters. George Orwell's paranoid communist mind could only come up with a black and white morality, his whole setting is based on a bunch of retards hungry for power. Saying every dystopian setting is a "retelling" of 1984 is basically saying nothing can be original, because everything falls under many tropes, and a dystopia is one of them. Shinsekai Yori is a very well-thought and original setting with a bunch of anti-villains trying to deal with a very complicated issue. |

A lot of people may disagree with me on some of these, but some of personal favorites are: Guilty Crown (Mecha like Code Geass and extremely similar) Break Blade (Also Mecha) Attack on Titan (Still airing) Fate/Zero (I haven't seen this one yet but almost everyone I hear talk about say it's good) Kanon (2006) Is This a Zombie (second season was terrible) Trinity Blood (Hard to get into and has a bad ending but worth watching) Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora (Lots of feels) Some of these you would probably like and others maybe not as much but I'm sure you'll find something good from this list. |

Mouryo no Hako (has a well-thought story and decent pacing) Mugen no Ryvius(heavily characte- driven drama with a sci-fi setting and pretty good direction) Higashi no Eden (goes almost hand in hand with Death Note minus the supernatural element) I'm hesitant to suggest Hyouka, but you could give it a try too, it has nice visuals and mysteries that fit an anime with high school setting. You could also try "Psychic Detective Yakumo", though the manga is clearly superior, and Ghost Hunt. |

Just an update for anyone still interested in this thread... from the suggestions above i have finished watching monster, attack on titan and madoka magica. Monster: Story was very in depth and most of the main characters were given a lot depth by showing their back storys. good use of foreshadowing for the ending. As im pretty sure this series is finished, the ending was maybe a little vague/left too open? (thats just my opinion). definitely worth the watch. Madoka Magica: Short and sweet, has a nice message and some pretty quirky animations. Attack on titan: Good action series, maybe a little predictable at times. will keep watching episodes as they come out. Darker than black is probably going to be the next series i watch. |
