I didn't like it from episodes 1 (and knew I wouldn't, which is why I purposely avoided it) and forced myself to watch the first 40 eps. I can definitely see why it's popular because of the human race, but it isn't for me. If South Park and Family Guy were classified as anime, they'd probably be giving Gintama a run for its money at rank 1, but I digress.

Actually it slightly gets better starting from 60 episodes, but it's actually after 100 episodes where it actually starts to improve greatly.

One of the factors for that would be the inclusion of new characters. This brings new and funny interactions between the characters, in other word it "spice up" the comedic formula.

Then there's the inclusion of new arcs that brings new development or background info. to already established characters. Then finally new settings which brings new perspective to Gintama.
