After a while it didn't go well anymore, but the OP was awesome and I guess that's what got me. The fighting was also awesome, but there were many holes in it that they forgot to patch up.

I would never want my manga to be adapted by a director so self-deprecating.

yeah honestly. "it didn't sell as well as madoka? oh well sorry it was such a miserable failure, better luck next time" isn't what you want to hear from the guy you entrusted your story to. what an ass.

You guys are kind of being assholes to the director. Do you realize how hard those people work? Enough with this "you're excuse wasn't good enough", you've got no right to demand excuses from the director anyways, unless you happen to be the mangaka or work for the studio!

The anime wasn't that bad as some people make it out to be but it still could've been better and yes I know the ending was bleh but at least it got me into the manga of Merry which is better.

I enjoyed the first half of it which followed the manga, but the anime-original parts were really bad IMO.

How hard he works has nothing to do with whether his direction philosophy was logical or appropriate to the material. Even if we don't have a "right to demand excuses", he's the one who voluntarily presented one to the public, and his comments were being judged accordingly.

Yeah, the comments above mine were along the lines of "what an ass". Because he was talking about the anime honestly, he offended the mangaka, which is fair enough. The way these comments sound, as a director you have no right to talk about your failures. You're not allowed to publicly reminisce about what you could have done better without a bunch of dicks who have never accomplished anything half as impressive calling you an asshole and demanding you make better excuses next time. I'm sorry if I'm coming across as overly hostile here, I just don't appreciate the disrespectful comments, especially coming from entitled fans who probably didn't even pay for it! Complain about the series all you want, but please stop taking out your frustration on the people who worked day and night to create it.

Heh, I did import every JP BD of Merry, actually... I'm not sure why, I guess I blame Merry's delicious design (and the posters are nice), as there are other shows I've passed on that are better, but oh well, I loved it until the end (well, and the really mediocre fight scenes).

Really though, if you can't blame a clearly misguided director for a show's flaws, you can't blame anyone. I'll agree that the wording was strong from some but the guy's excuses/explanations are just bewildering and hard to take seriously.

I think the director is probably to blame for the shows flaws since the topic of the thread is basically about him admitting such a thing. I think his explanation made sense though, because the other series I'd seen from him (casshern sins) was pretty much the opposite of moe. He jumped into something that he wasn't quite ready for, and instead of sticking to the book he tried to experiment by making slow fight scenes because he thought it would fit moe better. But it turns out he was wrong, his experiment failed. I'd still rather have a director who takes risks and messes up than a director who plays it safe and makes the same stuff we always see.

Of course, I could see why the director would feel guilty over such a thing since he's being paid to do it, and because he let down the mangaka with a botched adaption. I agree with the mangaka that it was a bit rude to all the other people who worked on it to talk about the flaws, but hell, at least he's being honest! Would you rather have Yamakan's "this is good, I don't know what's wrong with everybody" reaction? I think as a director he should at least wait a couple of years before discussing the flaws of his own work, but at the same time I think the mangaka's being a bit oversensitive.

Totally agree, the ending?!?!!? EXPLAINED FUCKING NOTHING....
And its like Bleach and most frustrating "action/fighting" animes...*20min of explaining things and 2min of actual action*
I literally just kept skipping parts on the last 4 episodes...and I mean seriously! Merry could have gone berserk like she did with Engi... Complete disappointment with this anime...the first 4-5 episodes were very nice as it introduced to the story and good enough information, but the rest was all drag-ons and what nots.

Note that only one of the main characters is even a dude. The other major male character is a cat. Difficult circumstances to pull a bro mood out of, but apparently it's possible.

Really, though, I'm gonna avoid that director from now on. The adaptation was a travesty and he didn't even blame it on something that makes sense. Like the budget or maybe the writer. Invisible trombones, seriously?

i don't get the reason why certain anime do not follow the manga. perhaps to prevent repetitiveness of people who have already read the manga but the route they went was terrible. the manga progression was so much better it would have been fine to just go with it....

MOE? i didn't really get that from the anime.

i KNOW! i never once thought of moe being in the anime, but if you think about it, the donuts might have something to do with it.

I loved the setting, the characters and the idea behind this work. However, I do not often get disappointed, but when I do, i'm kinda pissed. The fault probably could be found within "money". Re-doing the last part of the anime (I don't fucking need a happy end if the story isn't over at all yet) would improve a lot. And I really care about this particular work.

Since this thread resurfaced I'm going to recommended the manga to everyone again. It's just so full of bro-ness. Merry and Yumeji actually brofist from across panels! and John Doe brofist Merry's feet till she flies over the bad guys and lands a kamen rider kick on the mini boss. And they often team up with their broness to fight bad guys. They also play video games like true bros! BROS BROS BROS. Did I mention bros? Because the manga is full of it.

I feel bad for the author. To hear even the director thinks the project is a failure has to hurt badly. If anyone should express confidence in it, it should be the director.. even if they don't feel so, they shouldn't say so publicly. :/

I really liked the show for the most part, and Merry is a godly-tier character design, which is pretty much why I ended up importing it.

But there are two glaring flaws that really bothered me: 1) terribly disjointed and awkward action sequences and 2) a really bad, rushed ending. Everything else was so good that it really bothers me that it performed so poorly in these areas.

I didn't really see anything wrong with the action sequences and I expect that kind of ending when the manga hasn't ended yet and the show is 13 episodes....

Are you including the director as an insane hater?

Uh........sure? But lawl, why even direct something you hate!? If you really hate something, you can't possibly put your all into that project....which is why when people ask me to draw characters I hate, I always go "No, sorry, I can't." XD

its kinda suck anime

There's nothing that makes it a "suck anime". -_- btw you have "suck grammar"

The show is good..it is not super awesome but it's good. Maybe because i read so much bad stuff about anime and started to watch it with low expectations..and turn out to be nice show....it is just that ending...if there is not going to be 2nd season they could at least make proper ending with, let's say, whole series of 24-25 ep-s...more character development, more action and cool ending = awesome overall! ..no?
