Awww.. After watching this episode, I'm so rooting for Taichihaya now~~ Though sadly there's a high possibility of ArataXChihaya in the future eps 'coz the Fukui boy is finally back~~

but damn Arata, you make my heart go dokidoki too. Like Taichi's sexy "mayuge" / eyelashes, I see that megane coolness works for me too ♥♥♥♥♥♥

Oh my, I think I'll gonna have nosebleed attacks 'coz of these bishies.

And for the next episode, Kanade will finally show up!

Arata's reasons for quitting don't really make sense to me. His grandfather loved Karuta right? So rejecting Karuta would be like rejecting his grandfather's memory. Quitting would be like an insult to his grandfather and everything he loved. I would think that continuing to play the game his grandfather loved would honor his memory and give Arata something to keep him connected with him.

after watching episode for the second time... I partially agree with this part :)

but also I laughed at that part with riding a bike (yeah it's rather used cliche) ... so he was in depresion (lets assume) and just from visit of old friends and reading the letter he got better and will play karuta?
just like that?? o.O

on positive side it's good to hear manga is ongoing so they probably won't play with any romaces and pairings :]

plus animation of them running is indeed funny one :3

gosh, the anime's been speedy lately xD

I loved the episode, even if it did go by real quick, simply because Chihaya, Arata & Taichi were able to clear up the whole karuta deal.
Now we start the many character introductions & the tournaments~

D'aaww, this show is lovely. The colour scheme, the music, the characters - so gorgeous.

Arata's reason was completely predictable, but I feel for him. But come on, keeping your living quarters dark and gloomy for four years is never a good idea, Arata.

Chihaya's letter and little notes are too cute, and poor Taichi...

So to all those saying "He should keep playing for his grandpa´s memory bla bla bla, because its what his grandpa wanted"
Yes, indeed. Its true that his grandpa wanted it, and even Arata knows it. But you gotta understand that there are two types of people: the people who would think "oh im gonna keep going because that was his wish" which are "Chihaya type", or the people like Arata, that inflicts on himself feelings of guilt.
So i met a similar case from a friend, and its been years, she got over it somehow, but i do know she silently still blames herself.

We´re humans, guys. Words are very beautiful when we´re not in the real situation. Deep down inside the majority of the humans would feel guilt in this situation.

The only mistake Arata did was to try to cut his ties with Taichi and Chihaya. That was his only mistake. But the part of stop playing Karuta, you cannot blame him. He gave up his biggest dream, that is already a huge suffering. He made an association of Karuta with his grandpa´s death and he feels guilty because probably he feels like if he didnt go to the tournament and stayed taking care of his grandpa, his grandpa could have get help in time, and could have been saved.
And in case of no one noticing, he was ashamed of himself for letting go karuta since he says in the bicycle " I didnt want you to see what ive become".

"Because he was a teenager" bla bla. Yeah ofc, what a immature teenager. A guy who works in part time jobs since his 12 years old to help his mom (which is never home btw), lived in a tiny crumbled house, was bullied, makes friends for the first time and its forced to leave them, takes care all day of his grandpa, (mine had a stroke too, so i KNOW how its like), had to feed him, change his diapers, clean his vomit, watching his grandpa fading away, then still goes out to another part time work plus school. So YEAH . what a shallow teenager.

Im an adult and i dont have half of this "shallowness".

I find the train-chase scene kinda cheesy but nonetheless, this ep was good overall.

Was thinking that Arata would still be stubborn but it seems it's wasn't.

I lol'd when Chihaya grabbed him like grabbing a karuta card and got carried away. xD

Best scene for me was:

I had a smile when Taichi tried to hold Chihaya's hand ! XD
But Chihaya sometimes pissed me off when she tried forcing everyone around and didn't seem to understand the feelings of others.

Also, I don't understand why she's so attached to Arata and karuta game, sorry, but to me, the game itself is pretty much dull. And she only spent a year with Arata.
I have many childhood friends whom I miss, but I won't go boss them around, tell them what to do and force things onto them.

Furthermore, I'm not very close to any of my grandparents, but do you REALLY have to quit something related to your deceased loved ones? I think it might be hard at first, however, one would find it nostalgic and could finally cherish the moment.
Even though he didn't stay beside his grandfather's deathbed, it's not that he was fooling around or anything. He was competing at the tournament, so it's not like it's his fault. He shouldn't have felt being the one at fault.

Now Taichi's my favourite character, Chihaya needs to be more composed.
I wish Arata wouldn't go emo anymore.

I get why people think Arata's reason for quitting are good and all, but I still think it's just kinda silly. If I was gunning to become worlds #1 violinist and my mom who supports and helps teach me stuff died during a competition, I think I'd feel more obligated to become #1 then I would to quit right there and relapse into a corner to waste away in. Also, I think the guy's a little socially retarded. If he still wanted to be friends why'd he need to be such a dick to Chihaya. I mean sure seeing her probably reminds him of karuta AKA his dead grandpa who is dead, but still.

When it was your responsibility to be with a sick person with whom you know ANYTHING could happen ANYTIME, and at such a particular time you leave him, to make him proud of what you could do and achieve, FOR HIM, and THAT is exactly when that person DIES... Heck, you are BOUND to feel guilty. Arata had full rights to quit the one thing he loved the most at that particular moment. According to him, if he had stayed, he could have helped his grandfather with the sudden stroke. Or at least have been with him in his passing moment. If he had been there at that time, he would have continued with such headstrong determination that he'd have been famous already. Because the passing of his grandfather before his eyes was like his grandpa leaving a legacy and an inheritance to him. It is right.

BUT, BECAUSE Arata was NOT there at that moment, that very A Class that he had achieved felt like a curse. The curse that he felt killed his grandfather, and to him, it was in such an ironic manner too. Just LOOK at the situation.

He had closed himself off. Now you may question that he was dumb to have gone on like that for 4 years. Well, except for his grandfather, I don't think his parents cared much about his karuta. It hasn't been shown. His neighbour, Yuu, understood that this was his decision, and it wasn't a territory she could invade. There was nobody and nothing to make him move on from that moment.

When Chihaya came though, it became an entirely different situation. He found the memories he had chosen to forget. He found the determination that he had lost in HER eyes. He realised that he was living FOR someone (Chihaya mentioning he felt like a karuta god). Chihaya and Taichi, both, made him realise that it was HIS time now to be what his grandfather had been - a master, and maybe even surpass him and make him proud.

I totally agree with that. In distancing himself from Karuta, he became more stubborn than he intended to and pushed Chihaya and Taichi away. I guess those two made his fears come alive subconsciously. Happiness and guilt at the same time. He had already decided to let Karuta go. But the sudden confrontation was like shock-therapy. And it worked. :)

Anyway,
YES, Tachi and Chihaya moment. Pure Epic!
I LOVED how Taichi goes on about love with so many long pauses. And how his eyes keep shifting to Chihaya, just the way it did when he was a child. His love for her still remains.

DarthObsidian said:

I feel kind of bad for Taichi's girlfriend, dating a guy who is trying to get into another girl's pants. If he's going to pursue another girl he should at the very least have the decency to end things with his current girlfriend instead of leading her on and essentially trying to cheat on her.

DUDE, he's NOT trying to get into her pants! Eegh! That just sounds so wrong! He's not desperate!
Remember that Chihaya had been out of his life for quite a few years and suddenly made a reappearance. His feelings for her have come through again. His girlfriend is there for him, to ease his lonliness, to give him company. Whatever their romance level. But to him, Chihaya has always been special. Right from when he became protective of her since Arata's appearance. The whole "cheating" thing is such a social stuckup idea. It's not the right word to use here.
I don't know how to explain it right, but, ah! Give Taichi some space! His old feelings are resurfacing and overwhelming him. He's sorting himself out. He's realising that no matter how many girls he may go out with, his heart won't find the kind of peace it does when he's with Chihaya, despite the fact that "he's not having fun with her" or with her constantly "pissing him off". Yes, despite all those irksome behaviours, he still finds comfort in being with her. His only main threat, is Arata. :P

But then again, you can see that Chihaya is so much "in respect" with Arata. :)) LOL. She idolizes him. He has already given her a place as the queen, an aim to follow through, her worth in the world. Without Arata, she'd be nothing. At least, that's what she feels. She's the kind of character who feels aimless (seen in many animes) but the arrival of Karuta and Arata was her turning point. And what a fire it burned in her too!!

Let's see how this develops! I am TOTALLY loving the character development, the plot, the movement, the psychologies. It's brilliant!!

Seriously, sometimes when you read the summary to a show you go, "eh? meh" and then the show is so brilliant in every single way it blows you away. What a rollercoaster, no time wasted at all, and this being a full season!
The little details packed in here like the letter notes and the hands almost touching were beyond awesome.
I love Chihaya more with every episode. She was so great here, equally forward and shy and still in character.
I even like the love triangle, despite the fact that I usually hate them crummy love triangles with a passion.
I will now pick up my pool of drool and go rewatch this episode.

Maybe "get into her pants" wasn't the best way to phrase it, but the point is that Taichi wants to be with Chihaya, that's an obvious fact. I just think it's completely unfair and inconsiderate to his girlfriend that he keeps seeing her even though his heart really isn't in it and he clearly wants to be with someone else instead.

If I had a girlfriend, and an old crush of mine came back into my life and stirred up old feelings, and I clearly felt like I wanted to be with my crush more than anyone else, I wouldn't keep leading my girlfriend on and keep seeing her even though my heart wasn't in it. I would say "Sorry, but I can't be with you anymore. I like you and all, but I like this other girl even more and it wouldn't be fair for me to keep seeing you if all I can think about is this other girl" or something like that. But that's just my humble opinion.

I was disappointed that Arata had quit playing karuta though but the ending made me hopeful. But all in all, great episode, I especially loved Taichi here, he's a cutie. I'm excited for the future episodes! I'm hopeful for some new characters to be introduced that will join the karuta club.

I don't know, I think this series has lost some steam after episode 2. It feels so incredibly melodramatic that the emotions don't ring true for me and that cheesy chase scene at the end didn't help matters.

Such a wonderful episode, and some really thought provoking posts from other viewers. A couple of them touch on personal issues, so I'll jump in briefly.

When I was in grade 8, I was looking forward to a sports tournament that was being held over a weekend. I was pretty good at the sport, had formed a team with my friends, and fully expected to have a great time over the three days it was being held. Unfortunately my grandmother died two days before the tournament and of course I had to drop out. That in itself is nothing exceptional, we had expected her death, she had been in the hospital as a result of a second stroke for several weeks, and I had no difficulty with understanding the obligations of family mourning--I was even the only grandchild who went to the viewing at the funeral home. However, I still felt guilty because I had not gone to the hospital while she was sick. Probably as a consequence, I gave up that sport--never played it again while I was in middle or high school, and have only played it two or three times as an adult. I can totally understand the sort of reaction that Arata had.

As for Taichi and Chihaya, during my first two years of university, I twice fell in unrequitted love with the same girl in consecutive years (we were on the same residence floor) and was twice rejected on the same day (November 11). I was consigned to the friend zone and we continued to be close socially and hang out in the same group but that was it. A couple of years later I had put myself back together and was in a serious relationship with my future wife when I happened to be walking home late one night with my college friends. At one point the first girl linked her arm in mine and we walked together that way until back at the house. It just about punched my heart out of my chest and all I could think of was whether she was signaling something other than friendship (even though by that time I pretty well knew that I was the wrong gender to ever be anything more to her). I was several years older than Taichi, well beyond adolescence and hormonal storms, and still thrown for a loop by the sudden reappearance of a romantic possiblity--however unlikely. I don't blame Taichi a bit.

As for Chihaya, I just don't think she's thought about romance or relationships much yet. Despite her looks, she's still pretty backward socially (hence the chocolate for the doctor).
Please don't feed the trolls!

Sure, your point is right. It's wrong of him to lead his girlfriend on. But the fact is, despite the quick pacing of this show, there hasn't been much time between Chihaya and Taichi since they entered high school. What we've seen so far is more about their childhood than their high school life. They've barely met; Chihaya only caught a glimpse of his girlfriend and then she ran off that day, and then Taichi visited her at her Karuta club after quite a few years (since he's taken up football), and that's when Chihaya made Class A. And then because Arata sounded strange, she dragged him to Fukui. During this while, Taichi's feelings for her have slowly re-entered. That whole wanting to hold her hand part, was him deciding for himself whom he cared about more - his girlfriend (whom he realised on the train he didn't love) or Chihaya (on whom his eyes kept flickering back to). :)

I'm pretty sure that Taichi's the kinda guy who WOULD break up with his girlfriend before moving on to pursue Chihaya. Although it's obviously hard to come out honest, cos you're afraid to cause hurt. Let's see what happens. If he's a "coward" (as Arata keeps saying, LOL) then we would see him "cheating" on his gf. But if he mans up, then we'll probably see that breakup happening soon. :) Since he asked Chihaya if she loved someone, I'm hoping that he'll want to keep himself free just in case he's able to stir up feelings in her for him. But then again, his competitor (for Chihaya's attention), Arata, has come back, so we'll be seeing him go through a lot of mixed and dubious emotions.

Yeah.. You stop something out of guilt and if you don't have anyone or anything to make you go back to it, you'd eventually lose touch with it. You'll remember it as something you were good at. Maybe even regret it at some point. I hope you don't. I hope you've forgiven yourself. :)

About that girl, I feel bad for you... Unrequited love is just soo... crushing! I've had my share, but I don't think I could call them "love". I never went that far with my heart. Now that I have, and it's not unrequited, I feel like I'm on a whole new level altogether. I hope you're happy with your wife now. (Bless you both, :] ) I hope you can ignite better sparks between you two. :)

As for Chihaya, yeah, she's still a kid who's found her ambition through Arata in Karuta. She became so single minded, that she hasn't looked beyond Karuta in her heart. It's gonna be a shock to her and hard to digest when she'll be confronted with such a situation. She'll suddenly realise that perhaps there IS a part of her that wants someone too. I just hope it's not gonna be that because Arata and Taichi are joined by Karuta to her that she'll fall in love with both of them.
I'd like to see her character development at that stage. :)

Ah, this series is beautiful. :D There's just so much to think about! To talk about!

Team Taichi here. It's a bit annoying how Chihaya is always all Arata Arata Arata, makes me feel so bad for Taichi. :(

Also, I agree that Chihaya is very immature. I don't think romance registers at all to her. One of these days something's gonna happen like Taichi confessing to her, and she's going to be very fucking confused.

Chihaya forcing Arata to play when something's obviously wrong was being too selfish. I like her personality as she is now, but I do hope she'd mature just a little bit.

I like characters, the bond bettwen three friends. Hope Taichi and Chihaya will become more than friends :-)) I feel sorry for Taichi a little bit. This anime & art reminds me of a 5 cm per second. I'm looking forward 'till episode 25, maybe i would read manga also. Has anyone read it yet? Is it good? What is the difference if you compare anime until episode 5 with manga? :-)

Great episode as usual. The only thing I hope they do less of are those sudden growing of petals/leafs from the sides of the screen during "emotional" moments. It makes the situation look.... unreal and forced like when Chihaya meets Arata at the bottom of that slope, petals spring up..... Or on the train when she was crying towards the end....
Still, overall an excellent show. I like the energy Chihaya exudes.

You said exactly what I wanted to say. I really do feel bad for Taichi. He's all nice to her, and all she seems to care about is her dear Arata. Don't get me wrong, I like Arata. What I don't like is how Chihaya seems to only care about him. Also, when Taichi was about to hold her hand, and she just went and pulled Arata from the bike, I felt so bad for him.

@ Panaru, I don't really see how either of them are douchebags. I don't see it at all.
I am a sucker for romance!!!!

One of my candidates for best anime this season. If it keeps getting better and better after every episode like it has been doing so far, oh my, I can see good things

Chihaya forcing Arata to play when something's obviously wrong was being too selfish. I like her personality as she is now, but I do hope she'd mature just a little bit.

No, I don't think that's it. I think that Chihaya knew that something was up with Arata, and the last time she saw him, he was crying with happiness and thanking her and Taichi for playing karuta with him. So she figured that karuta would be a good way to cheer him up. It was poor judgment, but it wasn't selfish.

As for Chihaya neglecting Taichi... well, Arata's the one in trouble, and Taichi has a stable life and a girlfriend. Perhaps Chihaya feels that Arata needs her more than Taichi does right now.

I love the main trio of this anime. Characterisation looks really strong, the anime is very pretty, and I could very nearly feel tears welling up in my eyes in episode 5, but there were plenty of light and gun moments too. Considering that I've only cried during one anime, and almost cried during another two, and this series is just getting started... well, let's hope the series keeps its momentum going!

This anime is good and everything but i think they were pushing the drama to much and trying to hard in places overdoing it. Though the drama was done well in other places such as the flashback of the death of his grandfather you actualy cared at this point and other places, but they just overdid it in others.

Im also not a fan of grabby guys that grab onto girls and pull and try to force them places just because the guy wants to do something like Taichi did to Chihaya, tbh hes also one of those guys that dates some girl while hes still constantly chasing after someone else and only looking at the other person and would drop everything with his girlfriend to do a single thing for the other girl. So if Chihaya innocently asked Taichi to do something but it conflicted with something with his girlfriend Taichi would blow off his girlfriend for Chihaya in an instant and make up a lie. That is the sort of person he is and it kind of makes him a crappy person along with the grabby pushy thing.

I also wish Chihaya would stop bringing every little thing back to karuta, i know this show is based off it and the 3 of them but not every little thing is about karuta or should be brought back to it such as at the end when Arata was cycling next to the train trying to shout to them Chihaya says "Im so glad, he doesn't hate it! It's not that Arata hates karuta anymore!" i mean come on really you need to bring it back to karuta again here? Arata misses them as friends thats why he chased them but all she thinks about is karuta at this point?

I love how they managed to build everything up towards this moment. Although the whole idea behind it is kinda cliché, I still liked it. Can't wait to see the next episode.

LOL. Good point. I agree.

Also, i thought it was sweet of Arata not to scream just Chihaya´s name, but he also called for Taichi. It was sweet to know that Taichi is also an important friend to him. (ok i guess if he only called Chihaya´s name it would be more like a love confession, not a friendship, lol).

Oh! come on Arata is just being stupid. First even we accept his reason for not playing anymore there is no reason for him to act hostile and like an idiot. That alone is irritating as fuck. Second his overreacting like hell about his grandpa. So what? He was an old man with health problems his death was something to be expected. A simple natural thing. So what if he was out playing Karuta at the time? Was seeing him dieing so important?

This anime just gets better and better

And I agree with the posts above, chihaya is caring too much for the game, I predict that towards the end she'll be isolated on her road to victory, until she realises what's important

without offense, but are you human? because even animals get depressed when a friend of them dies=_= perhaps you dont know the meaning of true attachment? Arata´s grandpa was like a father to him or even more important to him than his absent mother. He was not just a crappy old fart grandpa.
When the most important person to you dies, come to this thread and re-think of what u just said.
Just because a person is old and we´re expecting the person to die at any moment, although we are prepared, doesnt mean we will not suffer and that we will follow the behavior we thought we would. Perhaps 20% of the people smiles and moves on, but i can assure you 80% of people enters in depression.
I hate people who judge other people´s situations without thinking about how the other person feels. Everyone has their own way to deal with pain, for Arata was to be emo. and he has the right to. period.

No offense was intended. Everyone has their own opinions, but for god´s sake, at least dont call stupid to Arata, because in case you havent noticed in the beginning of the thread there are people saying that would react like that, and even people saying that went through those type of situations and did the same. So somehow, you just called them all stupid.

dude, that was so not nice.

^ Amen.

I was in a somewhat similar situation as Arata, and it kinda hurts to be called stupid since I was in that type of depression as well. =/
